Scientists at Queen Mary, University of London have uncovered a link between two genes which shows how stem cells could develop into cancer.

The research, published in the online journal PLoS ONE, found a novel mechanism which could be the catalyst for stem cells changing into a tumour.

Dr Ahmad Waseem, a reader in oral dentistry at Queen Mary, University of London who led the research, said: "It was quite an unexpected discovery. We set out to investigate the role of the stem cell gene Keratin K15 which was thought to be a biomarker for normal stem cells.

"Through our research, we discovered there was link between K15 and the notorious cancer gene FOXM1. We found FOXM1 could target K15 to induce cancer formation."

Cancer develops when there is a problem with stem cells; the cells that carry out internal repairs throughout the human body. The loss of stem cell function leads to uncontrolled growth which ultimately develops into a tumour.

The team went through a process where they used extremely sensitive cell and molecular approaches to establish this link.

The study, funded by the Facial Surgery Research Foundation, Saving Faces, paves the way towards identifying new anti-cancer drugs which could be tailored towards cancer stem cells.

Consultant oral and maxillofacial surgeon Professor Iain Hutchison, founder of Saving Faces and co-author on the study, said: "We are excited about this finding as it could lead to more effective cancer drugs being developed to target cancer stem cells and prevent cancer recurrence."

Reader: My hair caught on fire at first concert

Kevin Winter / Getty Images

At a concert by the Police, one reader found things getting a little heated.

Our readers continue to contribute some funny, smart and incisive comments to our Today Entertainment Facebook page. Every Friday, we'll highlight those that really stood out. If you see a great comment throughout the week, click the ?Like? button underneath it to draw it to our attention.

On 'Coldplay made my girlfriend dump me and other first-concert stories'
Janet Wilson: "The Police around 1982 or so, New Haven Coliseum (?). My friend accidentally lit my hair on fire (unbeknownst to me) waving her lighter around. Then, she proceeded to hit me in the head until she put out the fire. No damage done, really, other than stinky, burned hair smell. EW. LOL!

On 'Screenwriter Nora Ephron dies at 71'
Jon Allred: "Right up front, I'll admit that I'm not part of the demographic that would read a book by Nora Ephron or love one of her movies. I'm a 53 year old carpenter and I'm not ashamed to say that I love not only her books (I've read them all), but all the movies she wrote and/or directed. We have lost an absolute treasure. She was one of the funniest, smartest writers I've ever had the good fortune to read. Reading her books is like having a conversation with her. Just wonderful. She will be truly missed. The world isn't nearly as funny now.

On 'Teacher booted from Kenny Chesney concert for resembling him'
Kris Terpening: "Oh Good God people... even if he WAS an impersonator let him be... Do these idiot fans really believe the real Kenny would be walking around his own concert? Who is more stupid here, touchy event staff or the fans?"

On 'Got $17K? You can buy Olsen twins' bizarre fuzzy backpack'
Denise Phillips McDonald: "What?? Are they IN the backpack??"

Junior researcher Zuzana Fajkosova passes international selection procedure and begins her doctorate in the Palaeogenetics Group at the JGU Institute of Anthropology

"BEAN Bridging the European and Anatolian Neolithic" is the name of a new multinational educational network which has received funding from the European Commission for the next four years. It is classified as a so-called Initial Training Network (ITN) in the EU Marie Curie Actions program, which allows young scientists early access to research activity at top international institutions. A basic requirement for funding is that the researchers involved leave their home country and conduct their research in another European country.

The BEAN Network consists of several European partners in England, Switzerland, France, Germany, Serbia, and Turkey, and has set itself the goal of enhancing the skills of a new generation of researchers in the subjects of anthropology, pre-history, population genetics, computer modeling, and demography. Many different disciplines are participating in the initiative. An important associate partner on the German side is the German Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden. The common focus of the project partners centers around questions associated with the origin of first farmer settlements, which were established some 8,000 years ago in West Anatolia and the Balkans. Where did they come from? Were they migrants from the Middle East? Are they our ancestors?

Anthropologists at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) have been meticulous in their preparation of the project over the last years and have entered into various cooperations to underpin it. Seven research institutions and two commercial companies are now working together on the BEAN project. Two leading researchers serve the network in an advisory capacity. These are archaeologist Ian Hodder from Stanford, who established his reputation with his excavations in Catal Hyk, and Hermann Parzinger, President of the Prussian Cultural History Foundation, who spent many years excavating and researching in European Turkey.

As of July 2012, doctoral candidate Zuzana Fajkoov, who completed her undergraduate studies at Masaryk University in Brno and at Charles University in Prague in the Czech Republic, will be the first of two BEAN researchers to start work at JGU's Institute of Anthropology and in the new palaeogenetic laboratory, which is currently in the final stages of construction on the edges of the university's Botanic Garden. She will analyze DNA from the bones of the last hunter-gatherers and the first settled farmers in the region between West Anatolia and the Balkans using the new cutting-edge technology of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS). Together with her colleagues in Dublin, London, and Geneva, she will use the genomic data to compile a model for the settlement of Europe.

"It is both a great honor and a huge opportunity for me that I can work together with such renowned researchers. I'm looking forward to Mainz, the university and the institute's new building," comments Fajkoov, who turned down a number of other offers in order to work at JGU. "A major factor leading to her appointment was the fact that besides mastering biomolecular techniques she also has good programming skills," explains Professor Dr. Joachim Burger, the Network Coordinator. "A few years ago we more or less founded the discipline of Neolithic Palaeogenetics single-handedly. However, undertaking genomic projects is possible only with the help of international colleagues. That is why we are so pleased that such networks give us and our colleagues the chance to train young research talents."

Besides academic training, the young researchers will be able to do practical work for the two commercial companies within the network and thereby gain work experience in a non-university environment. "This is important as not all of the candidates will opt for a pure research career," explains Karola Kirsanow, who moved from Harvard to Mainz last year and now administrates the network together with Burger. "Our young colleagues have to attend many workshops, courses, and internships, most of them abroad. While this makes for a very tough program, we believe that it significantly enhances the quality of the training and similarly enhances candidates' career prospects."

Many Years Young: Chronic stress Linked to Depression

(Bloomberg) Chronic stress appears to block a gene that guards against brain atrophy associated with depression, according to a study in rats that may help guide new treatments for mood disorders.

The gene, called neuritin, appears to be responsible for keeping healthy neuron connections in certain parts of the brain, according to the study? Rats whose genes were suppressed were more anxious and depressed than those whose genes weren?t, an experiment found. Further, activating the gene led to an antidepressant response. The research adds evidence to the idea that depression may be caused by?atrophy in the hippocampus,?the part of the brain responsible for mood and memory? ?This is based on findings that basically stress and depression have been shown to cause atrophy,? said?Ronald Duman,?a study author

London welcomes world again for Olympics

(AP) ? Sammy Lee remembers it vividly: food rationing, bombed-out buildings, rubble.

The year was 1948, and London was hosting the Olympics amid severe austerity in the aftermath of World War II. Lee, an American diver, and fellow amateur athletes slept on cots at local air bases and schools, brought their own towels and were ferried to events in old London buses.

"We didn't mind," said Lee, who won a gold and bronze medal in the Empire Pool. "It was the spirit of the Olympics. We were there to compete against the best."

Sixty-four years later, Lee will return as a spectator next month when London welcomes the world again.

Saying these 2012 Olympics will be much different is in itself a gold-medal understatement. This will be a $14.5 billion extravaganza featuring multimillionaire professionals and global stars like Usain Bolt and Michael Phelps, shiny new purpose-built venues and a revitalized east London.

Britain's biggest peacetime project also entails a massive security operation. To guard the games from terrorist attack, the country is deploying 35,000 safety, police and military personnel, surface-to-air missiles on rooftops, fighter jets, helicopters and two warships on the River Thames.

Yet, put aside worries about trouble and whether the city's stretched public transportation network can transport millions of extra riders, and this should be London's finest hour. A chance to throw a rousing five-ring celebration, a global bear hug that restores the festive atmosphere lacking at the past two Olympics, in Athens and Beijing.

"London this summer is going to be the place to have a party," Olympics Minister Hugh Robertson said.

The city will provide a stunning mix of old and new:

? Beach volleyball players diving across the sand in Horse Guards Parade, practically on the doorstep of the prime minister's 10 Downing Street residence.

? Marathon runners and road cyclists winding past Buckingham Palace.

? Tennis stars dueling on the Centre Court grass at Wimbledon.

? Archers firing their arrows at the hallowed Lord's cricket ground.

? Sprinters and swimmers competing in brand new arenas erected in a once-derelict area of east London brought back to life as the Olympic Park.

Headlining the show will be 10,000 athletes from more than 200 countries ? none bigger than ? who else? ? Bolt and Phelps. What can Bolt possibly do for an encore after his jaw-dropping three gold medals and three world records on the track in Beijing? Can 14-time gold medalist Phelps ? winner of a record eight golds in the pool in Beijing ? hold off American rival Ryan Lochte in what Phelps says will be his final Olympics?

Also at stake will be the top spot in the medals table between the world's two sporting superpowers: the United States and China. The U.S. won the most medals (110) in Beijing, but China took the most golds (51). Expect a tight race on both fronts this time.

Away from the playing fields, the city is dressing up, from the giant Olympic rings on Tower Bridge, to the party venues and giant screens in Hyde Park, to the landscaped gardens inside the 560-acre Olympic Park.

Four years ago, China used the Beijing Olympics as a coming-out spectacle to underscore its presence as a world power. It spent $40 billion on the games, erecting iconic venues like the Bird's Nest stadium and the Water Cube natatorium and staging a grandiose opening ceremony.

But London never tried to compete with the epic scale of Beijing, largely because of a global economic crisis that triggered bailouts, mounting debt and political turmoil across Europe.

Still, the Olympic budget of 9.3 billion pounds ($14.5 billion) is more than triple the estimated cost when London secured the games in 2005. The government says the games are expected to come in about 500 million pounds ($778 million) under budget. The local organizing committee's separate privately financed operating budget of 2 billion pounds ($3.1 billion) is on course to be met through sponsorships, TV rights, merchandising and ticket sales.

"This is the first time London got the games with no particular crisis around, but then they marched right into the worst financial crisis since before World War II," senior International Olympic Committee member Dick Pound of Canada said. "But they have succeeded remarkably well in spite of that."

London organizers look more closely to the 2000 Sydney Games as their model, hoping to channel the same vibrant energy, passionate crowds and Olympic buzz.

While Beijing suffered from empty seats at some venues and a disconnected public, London promises full arenas and knowledgeable spectators. The capital has residents of countless nationalities and cultures, providing a "home" crowd for teams from Namibia to Nepal. Live sites, music concerts and other attractions should keep visitors entertained day and night.

The tone will be set at the opening ceremony on July 27 at the 80,000-seat Olympic Stadium, a three-hour spectacle directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Danny Boyle of "Slumdog Millionaire" fame. Inspired by William Shakespeare's "The Tempest," the ceremony will include a segment involving Daniel Craig's James Bond and a closing act by former Beatle Paul McCartney.

Boyle has revealed that the opening sequence will feature an idyllic British countryside setting complete with live farm animals ? 70 sheep, 12 horses, 10 chickens and nine geese to be precise. He's even promising a cloud that produces rain ? in case there isn't enough of the real stuff around.

The Economist magazine couldn't resist a little zinger: "Opening ceremonies are a country's opportunity to sell itself to the world. Britain appears to be selling irony."

Queen Elizabeth II, fresh off a round of Jubilee celebrations marking her 60 years on the throne, will formally open the games. The big question: Who will light the cauldron that burns until the closing of the games on Aug. 12? Britain's five-time rowing gold medalist, Steve Redgrave, is the bookies' favorite, followed by soccer star David Beckham ? the global icon who was bypassed for Britain's Olympic soccer team despite playing a key role in bringing the games to his hometown.

Roger Bannister ? the first runner to break the 4-minute barrier for the mile in 1954 ? is another possibility for lighting the flame. But who's to say the honor won't go to an unknown? A young athlete from one of the poor boroughs surrounding the Olympic Park, a symbol of youth and the future generation that was the central theme of London's winning bid?

The queen won't be the only royal in the Olympic spotlight. Her 31-year-old granddaughter, Zara Phillips, will be competing for the British equestrian team. Prince William and wife Kate are sure to be spotted around town, providing a dash of stately glamour to the proceedings.

And there are plenty of bold-face names at the venues: Bolt running in the 100 and 200 meters and 4x100 relay, Phelps swimming in multiple events again and going head-to-head with Lochte, who beat him twice at last year's world championships.

The star-studded U.S. basketball team features new NBA champion LeBron James, Kobe Bryant and Kevin Durant. Just three weeks after chasing a Grand Slam title at Wimbledon, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova will be back at the All England Club vying for gold medals instead of trophies ? wearing colorful team outfits instead of the all-white dress code.

Women boxers will be competing in the Olympics for the first time, and the IOC is negotiating with Saudi Arabia to send its first female athletes to the games.

Others to watch include South African double-amputee Oscar Pistorius, still hoping to qualify as the first amputee runner to compete in the Olympics; China's Lin Dan, widely considered the greatest badminton player of all-time going for a second Olympic gold medal; Brazilian goal-scoring star Neymar in men's soccer; and Hiroshi Hoketsu, competing for Japan in equestrian at the age of 71.

The locals should have plenty to cheer about as Britain seeks to equal its surprising fourth-place medals table finish in Beijing. Among the contenders from Team GB are diver Tom Daley, heptathlete Jessica Ennis, swimmer Rebecca Adlington, three-time gold medalists Chris Hoy (track cycling) and Ben Ainslie (sailing), and a powerful team of rowers.

Despite 6.5 billion pounds ($10 billion) of improvements, serious concerns remain over whether the Underground system can cope with the millions of extra passenger journeys. Officials have warned of expected overcrowding and long delays at some key stations and urged Londoners to work from home or change their travel habits.

As for driving, the message has been: Don't even think about it. Many locals have complained that they are being inconvenienced while miles of dedicated Olympic roads and lanes are reserved for Olympic officials, athletes, media and VIPs.

The games will be protected by 12,000 police officers during peak times and 23,700 security staffers ? a number that includes 7,500 troops. A no-fly zone will be established over Olympic venues.

London knows the threats all too well. Homegrown suicide bombers attacked the city's public transport system, killing 56 people, on July 7, 2005, the day after London was awarded the games.

"The games present an attractive target for our enemies," said Jonathan Evans, head of Britain's domestic spy agency MI5. "But the games are not an easy target, and the fact that we have disrupted multiple terrorist plots here and abroad in recent years demonstrates that the U.K. as a whole is not an easy target for terrorism."

No one has more riding on these games than Sebastian Coe, the two-time Olympic gold medalist in the 1,500 meters who led London's winning bid and has spearheaded the seven years of preparations. This project, he said, tops anything he accomplished on the track.

"It doesn't get any bigger," Coe said. "I remember the feeling I had 40 minutes before setting out on the track in front of 100,000 people. Now I wonder how I will measure that against the 40 minutes before the opening ceremony."

Givenchy puts Virgin Mary images on menswear

PARIS (AP) ? Eclectic was the word to describe Day Three of Paris menswear week.

Friday's spring-summer collections had a little something for everyone: from the high-waisted gangster styles of film noir to fashions evoking Brazilian soccer and even the Catholic Church.

In one collection ? which its designer called the longest fashion show in history ? the boundaries were blurred between clothing and performance art.

"Here in Paris, the only thing that defines menswear is variety, difference. You cannot put it in one direction," French fashion federation president Didier Grumbach told The Associated Press.

Givenchy's enfant terrible designer, Riccardo Tisci, delivered the day's slickest show. In a provocative display, he delved into his Roman Catholic childhood in southern Italy to produce clothing loaded with Virgin Mary images.

Saturday's shows include Dior Homme and powerhouse Hermes.

___

GIVENCHY

It was an ecclesiastical tour de force in a religion-inspired collection. Incense wafted from the sidelines and organ music set the scene in a show that played with the layers of priestly garb.

Tisci shows always contain a shock factor. Here it came in the form of sleeveless tops and jackets printed with effigies of the Virgin Mary with a black bar over her eyes.

Jesus sandals ? de rigueur for all the models ? bore spiky chains.

"I'm going back to my roots," Tisci, an Italian Catholic, told The Associated Press. "It's about Communion, but a sex version of it."

Silhouettes were knee-length or at the hip. The longer looks in black, white and blood red descended like columns, with cassock undergarments hanging underneath. The shorter looks were best, such as a printed T-shirt paired with a jacket ? again featuring Virgin imagery ? that opened up like a Catholic triptych.

The sheer volume of clothes was unusual for a spring show, but Tisci rarely follows the rules.

"It's great to see so many clothes on the runway," former French Vogue Editor Carine Roitfeld said from the front row. "Each season he becomes stronger and stronger."

___

BAND OF OUTSIDERS

Was it a fashion show or performance art?

In their Paris debut, the fashion label Band of Outsiders is claiming to have pulled off the longest fashion show in history. The presentation ? which featured a male model living in a shop widow ? began Wednesday and wrapped up Friday evening, 60 hours later.

Live-streamed on the Internet for three days and four nights, it became somewhat of a phenomenon, receiving 25,000 unique hits, according to designer Scott Sternberg.

Sternberg decided that every 90 minutes, his model had to disappear briefly to change into a new outfit from the collection ? making the event more like an installation than a fashion show.

"I am a clothing designer, but the line between art and fashion is blurred," said Sternberg. "For what I do, a runway isn't valid."

___

JUUN J.

The exaggerated silhouette of the 1940s matinee idol was behind Juun J.'s bold and exhaustive menswear offering. The Korean designer, who impressed critics last season, took for inspiration the 1948 Japanese movie "Drunken Angel" by Akira Kurosawa.

"The (postwar) shapes are beautiful ... big shoulders, high waists," the designer said backstage.

If only Juun had kept it that simple.

The show started with the dark-pinstriped, broad-shouldered suits of film noir gangster movies. One beautiful black double breasted suit looked like a wrap-around kimono with its inflated and ruffled arms. East meets West was also nicely conveyed with tapered sultan pants.

But at times it felt like the designer was trying too hard. Silhouettes seemed to come in all shapes and sizes. And whatever he was trying to say was lost on one look, a white oversized coat with myriad flapping lapels and layers.

___

ATELIER GUSTAVOLINS

Brazilian designer Gustavo Lins used his menswear spring-summer 2013 show to kick off a collaboration with the Brazilian sportswear brand Penalty.

Sportswear and couture may seem like an unlikely mix, but in the current financial climate, independent designers have to think outside the box. With the 2014 World Cup in Brazil round the corner, this may prove a smart business move.

The low-budget show presented sporty-edged silhouettes with loose waists on models holding leather footballs. There were some interesting takes on trousers, such as gray cotton sultan pants, but overall the collection lacked cohesion.

Cambridge NanoTech and Ghent University to Commercialize ALD Particle Coating Technology

By Will Soutter

The new technology would augment Cambridge Nanotech?s existing portfolio of ALD systems and would address the coating requirements of powders, particles and plasma and non-plasma based 3-D objects.

Ghent University Professor, Christophe Detavernier, emphasized on the emergence of applications that necessitate uniform and ultra-thin layers of nanocoating for powders and particles. He stated that ALD has been demonstrated as a reliable technique for such deposition of nanocoating on powders.

Ganesh Sundaram, Technology Vice President at Cambridge NanoTech, commented on the ability of the Cyprus Particle Coating system to employ both plasma and thermal ALD in a single framework and the advantages it offers to users in the form of reduced process temperature, enhanced rate of nucleation and improved film quality which is characteristic of plasma-enabled ALD techniques.

The official announcement of the alliance was made at the 12th International Conference on Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD 2012) at Dresden in Germany in the third week of June. The University of Ghent presented their work involving the rotary reactor architecture employed in the ALD system. This architecture simplifies the deposition process for optimal uniform coatings as opposed to the conventional, complex fluidized processes. Scientists from Cambridge NanoTech presented their research and development work on in-situ QCM and spectroscopic ellipsometry, self Assembled Monolayers and spatial ALD.

'Life-threatening' heat warning across much of US

A string of excessive heat warnings were issued by the National Weather Service early Thursday with temperatures expected to soar to 100 degrees and more in much of the United States.

The warnings were issued for parts of Illinois, New Jersey, Ohio, Tennessee, Nebraska, Missouri, Indiana, Oklahoma and Kansas. Weather.com said much of the Northeast would see temperatures in the 90s.

?If precautions are not taken ? persons outside could suffer from heat exhaustion and potentially heat stroke. Heat-related illness can be life-threatening,? the WS warned.

?Temperatures within vehicles can become lethal in a few minutes. Never leave children or pets in vehicles,? it added.

The NWS said parts of central Indiana could see the hottest weather since the 1930s.

More than 1,000 temperature records broken in a week

On Wednesday, temperatures soared toward and above 100 degrees in many Central Plains states and meteorologists expect little relief over the next couple of weeks.

Slideshow: Summertime living (on this page)

Parts of Colorado and Kansas have reported temperatures at or above 100 degrees Fahrenheit for several days.

Livestock suffering
Dry conditions and high temperatures have exacerbated wildfires in western states, and have threatened corn crops and stressed livestock in the Central Plains.

"This overall pattern looks like it is going to stick around well into July," Alex Sosnowski, an expert senior meteorologist with AccuWeather.com, said.

"It looks pretty much rock solid centered on the Central Plains and Central Rockies over into the Tennessee Valley interior south," Sosnowski said. "It's anchored in there and it's really not going to change much."

2-mile wall of flame in Colo. fire; more flee

Sosnowski said temperatures would spike toward 100 degrees from Chicago to Washington D.C. and possibly New York every now and then, and areas from Colorado to the interior of the Carolinas would have little hope for temporary relief.

Temperatures will push 90 degrees most days in New York, Washington and Philadelphia the next two weeks, while Denver, Kansas City and the middle of the nation will tend to see high temperatures pushing 100 degrees, he said.

Debby aftermath: Flooded homes, busted roads

Hill City, Kansas, a farming community of about 1,500 people in the northwest part of the state, has been the hottest place in the nation for several days.

The dry conditions have led to numerous wildfires across Colorado, Utah and other western states, forcing thousands of people from their homes and consuming houses and timber.

Reuters contributed to this report.

Rogers Communications To Fire 300 More Workers As - The Inquisitr

Rogers Communications

Canadian services provider Rogers Communications Inc. is preparing to fire several hundred workers as part of the company?s cost-cutting strategy brought about as the firm faces fierce competition in the wireless, cable and internet sectors.

According to the?Financial Post:

?New chief financial officer Tony Staffieri is undertaking a review of the company?s multibillion-dollar capital structure in the hope he can trim from the $5-billion a year Rogers spends on contracts with handset makers like Apple Inc. and Research In Motion, Ltd., wireless-equipment providers such as Ericsson AB, and dozens of smaller partners.?

The need to cut costs was verified by spokeswoman Patricia Trott who stated:

?We?re managing costs in areas where it makes sense and continuing to invest in the future.?

Rogers is leaving no stone uncovered as the company examines 375 directors, vice-presidents and high-level sales associates, all of whom have the chance to lose their jobs.

News of more layoffs at the company comes after the organization fired 300 workers in March.

Rogers is being forced to cut jobs as Bell Canada Inc. continues to make inroads against Rogers? television and internet services. According to the company 27,000 customers were lost last quarter while Bell added 18,000 customers.

Despite shrinking TV and Internet sales Rogers still maintains Canada?s largest mobile presence with 9.3 million subscribers.

It?s still not clear when Rogers Communications will fire 300 more workers or from what sectors of the business those workers will come from.

Are you surprised by the company?s turn in fortunes over the last several years?
