How The Africa Cup of Nations affects the Premier League and Football League - Group A review

Angola, Cape Verde, Morocco and hosts South Africa are in Group A of the African Cup of Nations and their involvement has either directly or indirectly affected teams such as Everton, Crystal Palace, Oldham Athletic, Norwich City, QPR, Arsenal, Liverpool, Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur and Wrexham.

Next year the African Nations Cup is once again in full flow as Zambia look to defend their title in South Africa. As always the competition will have an effect on global football as many stars players from the bigger leagues consider joining up with their countries in a bid to become kings of their home continent.

The Confederation of African Football has set the deadline for the submission of squads for January 9th; with the full list of 23-players being named by midnight. Any late submissions will see a substantial fine and the loss of a player from the list.

Some teams have announced their preliminary squads or training camp teams early but this of course doesn?t cater for the English League system whose continued lack of a winter break means most of the English based players will not be available until shortly before the competition starts on the 19th January.

But which Premier League and football league teams are going to win and lose from the Africa Cup of Nations?

Here is a country-by-country guide for Group A.

South Africa

Unless there is a dramatic U-turn from recent international retiree Everton midfielder Steven Pienaar the Premier League should remain largely unaffected by the host nation?s squad choices. Lower down the football pyramid however and Crystal Palace could be without midfield enforcer Kagisho Dikgacoi and Oldham Athletic could lose Dean Furman to the Bafana Bafana. Norwich City winger Andrew Surman is also eligible but has made his intentions clear that he will not play for the country of his birth.

Angola

No current Premier League interest however former Manchester United and Hull City striker Manucho will be looking to add to his impressive goal record for the Palancas Negras.

Morocco

Interestingly The Atlas Lions qualification could have had a bigger impact on the Premier League than is being felt.?Adel Taarabt is not selected for the squad; the?QPR player had given mixed signals as to whether he would accept a call-up, but there are others who have been.?Oussama Assaidi and Karim El Ahmadi of Liverpool and Aston Villa respectively are in, but?Maraoune Chamakh of Arsenal has also not been selected

Cape Verde

The shock qualifiers from the tiny archipelago nation do not have any current players who play in the UK. However their effect is still felt in the Premier League as they qualified at the expense of Cameroon. That means the likes of QPR defender Stephane M?Bia, Tottenham full-back Benoit Assou-Ekotto, Norwich defender Sebastian Bassong and Wrexham goalie Joslain Mayebi will not be lost at the turn of the year.

Who do you think loses out most from the 2013 African Cup of Nations?

Health and Fitness of Your Pet Horses ? Absolutely No Horsing ...

Posted on 16 December 2012.

Petting a horse is not a unique concept and many people these days have amazing facilities for their animal. However, the fact remains that not all can afford to own a horse. The idea of owning a horse is great, but it is indeed challenging and is no where close to adopting a cat or dog. No matter how many pets you have at home, the care and attention that a horse needs is quite different. Starting from the space it needs, grooming, food and training, everything has to be perfect.

You need to have a big farm, if you wish to pet a horse. Horses are wonderful and should be treated with due respect and care. If you are not able to manage a horse, and yet wish to have one, then it is better to hire a professional to do so. These professionals are well trained and you need no worry at all once you have hired them.

Important point for feeding the horse

You should feed the horse depending upon its health, age, activities and season. Some horses may eat more while the others have limited diet. Healthy diet plays a very important role in the growth process of the horse. Food for horses is available easily in the market, which is specifically produced keeping their body requirements in mind.

It is a pleasure watching a well maintained horse galloping in your farm. Your beautiful animal is sure to attract a number of eyes in the neighborhood. You could blend a few of the food items to ensure a healthy diet for your pet. When purchasing food for horse always look for the best brand. It is better to buy food items, which are of good quality, even if it is a little expensive.

Where to buy food products for your lovely pet?

Always choose the right food products made with healthy ingredients, which will ensure that your animal remains fit and disease free. Not all food products that are highly priced are good. There are many producers who sell their merchandizes for cheaper prices with excellent quality.

Instead of running around from one store to another, you could buy horse food from the online vendors. They not only offer you a variety of merchandizes, but also discounts that you could use. Once you?ve placed an order for what you like, and made the payment for the discounted amount, you can relax and wait for the product to be delivered at your doorstep.

The biggest advantage of buying these products online is that, you will sometimes get the best quality for same value. There are many brands that sell all the horse related accessories online too. The best way to judge a vendor is to go through reviews about his or her products, which are easily found posted on the online forums. They give you a better idea about its ingredients, effects on animals and others.

What should you know before buying a horse?

The first thing is to figure out why you need a horse? It is for your passion or profession? Once you are clear about this, you?ll then need to find out how to maintain it based on your requirements. Horses that are meant to stay in the farm are treated much differently than the ones for the races. Their needs are different and are brought up in a unique manner.

The horses that are petted for professional needs should ideally be much stronger and active. They are fed different kind of food, which is rich in proteins, carbohydrates and other nutrients to ensure that their health is not compromised under any circumstances. On the other hand, a farm horse has different diet and thus, it needs to be looked into carefully.

Over the fiscal cliff: Soft or hard landing?

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Efforts to save the nation from going over a year-end "fiscal cliff" were still in disarray as lawmakers returned to the Capitol to confront the tax-and-spend crisis. A tone-setting quotation was Democratic Sen. Harry Reid's assertion that the House under Republican Speaker John Boehner had been "operating with a dictatorship."

President Barack Obama flew back to Washington from Hawaii after telephoning congressional leaders from his Christmas vacation perch. Once back, he set up a meeting with leaders of both parties at the White House late Friday to make a fresh attempt to find a solution before Monday night's deadline.

A look at why it's so hard for Republicans and Democrats to compromise on urgent matters of taxes and spending, and what happens if they fail to meet their deadline:

___

NEW YEAR'S HEADACHE

Partly by fate, partly by design, some scary fiscal forces come together at the start of 2013 unless Congress and Obama act to stop them. They include:

? Some $536 billion in tax increases, touching nearly all Americans, because various federal tax cuts and breaks expire at year's end.

? About $110 billion in spending cuts divided equally between the military and most other federal departments. That's about 8 percent of their annual budgets, 9 percent for the Pentagon.

Hitting the national economy with that double whammy of tax increases and spending cuts is what's called going over the "fiscal cliff." If allowed to unfold over 2013, it would lead to recession, a big jump in unemployment and financial market turmoil, economists predict.

___

WHAT IF THEY MISS THE DEADLINE?

If New Year's Day arrives without a deal, the nation shouldn't plunge onto the shoals of recession immediately. There still might be time to engineer a soft landing.

So long as lawmakers and the president appear to be working toward agreement, the tax hikes and spending cuts could mostly be held at bay for a few weeks. Then they could be repealed retroactively once a deal was reached.

The big wild card is the stock market and the nation's financial confidence: Would traders start to panic if Washington appeared unable to reach accord? Would worried consumers and businesses sharply reduce their spending? In what could be a preview, stock prices in the U.S. and Europe dropped Friday on waning hopes that Obama and key lawmakers would reach an 11th-hour compromise.

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke has warned lawmakers that the economy is already suffering from the uncertainty and they shouldn't risk making it worse by blowing past their deadline.

___

WHAT IF THEY NEVER AGREE?

If negotiations between Obama and Congress collapse completely, 2013 looks like a rocky year.

Taxes would jump $2,400 on average for families with incomes of $50,000 to $75,000, according to a study by the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center. Because consumers would get less of their paychecks to spend, businesses and jobs would suffer.

At the same time, Americans would feel cuts in government services; some federal workers would be furloughed or laid off and companies would lose government business. The nation would lose up to 3.4 million jobs, the Congressional Budget Office predicts.

"The consequences of that would be felt by everybody," Bernanke says.

___

THE TAXES

Much of the disagreement surrounds the George W. Bush-era income tax cuts, and whether those rates should be allowed to rise for the nation's wealthiest taxpayers. Both political parties say they want to protect the middle class from tax increases.

Several tax breaks begun in 2009 to stimulate the economy by aiding low- and middle-income families are also set to expire Jan. 1. The alternative minimum tax would expand to catch 28 million more taxpayers, with an average increase of $3,700 a year. Taxes on investments would rise, too. More deaths would be covered by the federal estate tax, and the rate climbs from 35 percent to 55 percent. Some corporate tax breaks would end.

The temporary Social Security payroll tax cut also is due to expire. That tax break for most Americans seems likely to end even if a fiscal cliff deal is reached, now that Obama has backed down from his call to prolong it as an economic stimulus.

___

THE SPENDING

If the nation goes over the fiscal cliff, budget cuts of 8 percent or 9 percent would hit most of the federal government, touching all sorts of things from agriculture to law enforcement and the military to weather forecasting. A few areas, such as Social Security benefits, Veterans Affairs and some programs for the poor, are exempt.

___

THERE'S MORE AT STAKE

All sorts of stuff could get wrapped up in the fiscal cliff deal-making. A sampling:

? Some 2 million jobless Americans may lose their federal unemployment aid. Obama wants to continue the benefits extension as part of the deal; Republicans say it's too costly.

? Social Security recipients might see their checks grow more slowly. As part of a possible deal, Obama and Republican leaders want to change the way cost-of-living adjustments are calculated, which would mean smaller checks over the years for retirees who get Social Security, veterans' benefits or government pensions.

? The price of milk could double. If Congress doesn't provide a fix for expiring dairy price supports before Jan. 1, milk-drinking families could feel the pinch. One scenario is to attach a farm bill extension to the fiscal cliff legislation ? if a compromise is reached in time.

? Millions of taxpayers who want to file their 2012 returns before mid-March will be held up while they wait to see if Congress comes through with a deal to stop the alternative minimum tax from hitting more people.

___

CALL THE WHOLE THING OFF?

In theory, Congress and Obama could just say no to the fiscal cliff, by extending all the tax cuts and overturning the automatic spending reductions in current law. But both Republicans and Democrats agree it's time to take steps to put the nation on a path away from a future of crippling debt.

Indeed, the automatic spending cuts set for January were created as a last-ditch effort to force Congress to deal with the debt problem.

If Washington bypassed the fiscal cliff, the next crisis would be just around the corner, in late February or early March, when the government reaches a $16.4 trillion ceiling on the amount of money it can borrow.

Boehner says Republicans won't go along with raising the limit on government borrowing unless the increase is matched by spending cuts to help attack the long-term debt problem. Failing to raise the debt ceiling could lead to a first-ever U.S. default that would roil the financial markets and shake worldwide confidence in the United States.

To avoid that scenario, Obama and Boehner are trying to wrap a debt limit agreement into the fiscal cliff negotiations.

___

SO WHAT'S THE HOLDUP?

They're at loggerheads over some big questions.

Obama says any deal must include higher taxes for the wealthiest Americans. Many House Republicans oppose raising anyone's tax rates. Boehner tried to get the House to vote for higher taxes only on incomes above $1 million but dropped the effort when it became clear he didn't have the votes.

Republicans also insist on deeper spending cuts than Democrats want to make. And they want to bring the nation's long-term debt under control by significantly curtailing the growth of Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security ? changes that many Democrats oppose.

Obama, meanwhile, wants more temporary economic "stimulus" spending to help speed up a sluggish recovery. Republicans say the nation can't afford it.

___

IT'S NOT JUST WASHINGTON

Seems like they could just make nice, shake hands and split their differences, right?

But there's a reason neither side wants to give ground. The two parties represent a divided and inconsistent America. True, Obama just won re-election. But voters also chose a Republican majority in the House.

Republicans and Democrats alike say they are doing what the voters back home want.

Neither side has a clear advantage in public opinion. In an Associated Press-GfK poll, 43 percent said they trust the Democrats more to manage the federal budget deficit and 40 percent preferred the Republicans. There's a similar split on who's more trusted with taxes.

About half of Americans support higher taxes for the wealthy, the poll says, and about 10 percent want tax increases all around. Still, almost half say cutting government services, not raising taxes, should be the main focus of lawmakers as they try to balance the budget.

When asked about specific budget cuts being discussed in Washington, few Americans express support for them.

___

THE COUNTDOWN

Time for deal-making is short, thanks to the holiday and congressional calendars. Some key dates for averting the fiscal cliff:

? Lawmakers didn't begin returning to the Capitol until Thursday, leaving less than a week to vote on a compromise before year's end.

? Obama returned Thursday from his Christmas vacation in Hawaii. The president asked congressional leaders to the White House Friday to try to resolve the fiscal cliff.

? If lawmakers reach Dec. 31 without a deal, some economists worry that the financial markets might swoon.

? The current Congress is in session only through noon Eastern time on Jan. 3. After that, a newly elected Congress with 13 new senators and 82 new House members would inherit the problem.

POLICE ROUNDUP: London man struck by baseball bat

LAUREL COUNTY ? A London man who awakened to find personal belongings missing ended up getting struck in the head with a baseball bat, according to Laurel County Sheriff John Root.

Root said Deputy Robbie Grimes continues his investigation into the assault which happened Wednesday at Sweet Hollow Apartments south of London.

Jeffery Dale Robbins, 50, was transported to Baptist Regional Medical Center by Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County.

He told deputies he was asleep, and when he woke up some of his things were missing.

He lives with his sister and brother-in-law, who were in the home at the time the items were reported missing.

According to Root, an argument ensued over the missing items, and as Robbins was attempting to leave, he was struck over the head with the bat.

The investigation continues.

Out-of-control juvenile in custody

A 16-year-old reported to be ?out of control? was taken into custody by a court-designated worker Wednesday.

Laurel County Sheriff John Root said Deputy Robbie Grimes and Senior Sgt. Greg Poynter took the male juvenile into custody at 10:19 p.m. after being dispatched to a complaint of an out-of-control juvenile on Oneal Road, west of London.

Upon arrival Grimes and Poynter learned the juvenile became angry and pulled a knife on a resident at the home. He also allegedly threatened to kill persons in the home as they slept. The argument was reportedly over a marijuana plant found in the juveniles? room, which an adult resident of the house found and flushed down the toilet.

Monmouth Dems, GOP ready to party at Sandy relief concert at Stone Pony

ASBURY PARK ? President Barack Obama and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie recently teamed up to show the word that two icons of the Democratic and Republican parties respectively were ready to take on the recovery efforts of Hurricane Sandy together. Many political observers saw this combined effort as being mutually beneficial to both politicians, as recent Electoral College tallies and Garden State polls have shown.

The same sense of crossing party lines for a common cause has compelled the Monmouth County Democratic Organization, the Monmouth County Republican Committee and the New Leaders Council NJ to unite to sponsor a Hurricane Sandy relief party concert at the legendary Stone Pony.

The bipartisan bash will take place on Sunday, December 30, from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m..

The event will feature multiple bands, whose sets will be interspersed with brief speeches by elected officials and dignitaries. Confirmed bands for the event include the B Street band, The Pat Roddy Band, Joe Orlando and the Cryers, Vinny Pastore and the Crazy Horse Band and Back Up Jackson. NJ 101.5?s Kevin McArdle will emcee the event.

The New Jersey Young Republicans and the New Jersey Young Democrats are also sponsoring the event.

Tickets will start at $25 for general admission. All proceeds raised at the event will be donated to the Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund. Attendees can also bring food and cleaning supplies for donation to the FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties.

Local Democrats and Republicans alike concurred that during this particular post-Sandy holiday season, partisan bickering should take a backseat to serious fundraising to help restore the Jersey Shore.

?It?s important to demonstrate that we can put aside political differences for all of the people that need help,? said John Bennett, chairman of the Monmouth County Republicans. ?This is not Republican or Democratic help ? it?s just the right kind of help. Bringing people together is what we think should be done.?

?We?re taking Governor Christie?s and President Obama?s lead on this,? said Joe Grillo, executive director of the Monmouth County Democratic Organization and chairman of the Asbury Park Democrats. ?They showed the world that when the chips are down, New Jersey bands together to help our neighbors. In the end, we?re all New Jerseyans, we?re all Americans, and politics gets lost at the door when it?s time to rebuild and restore the Jersey Shore.?

At the same time, the fact that Democrats and Republicans are about to party together didn?t completely quash the desire for some form of political combat.

?It?s been a generation since the Republicans and Democrats have partied together for a good cause,? Grillo said. ?I may have to arm wrestle [Republican Assemblyman] Declan O?Scanlon. I?ll do it for charity. We?re going to roll the dice and see what happens.?

O?Scanlon, of Little Silver, who represents the 13th state Legislative District, answered Grillo?s call to arms.

?I accept his challenge,? O?Scanlon laughingly said, who has been working together with Grillo to help organize Sunday?s event. ?Hopefully, moving forward, we?ll hold more bipartisan fundraising events together here in Monmouth County and the entire Jersey Shore.?

Grillo said that there might be some ?surprises? in his Asbury Park hometown at Sunday's concert, but said there is no surprise about why the bipartisan fundraiser?s particular venue was picked. Bruce Springsteen helped to define the Jersey Shore sound from the Stone Pony?s stage. Springsteen, an unapologetic Democrat and New Jersey?s unofficial poet laureate, famously embraced Christie, the Republican rock star, in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, a moment which symbolized bipartisanship at its best.

?The Stone Pony symbolizes the resilience of the Jersey Shore,? Grillo said. ?Asbury Park survived decades of abandonment, corruption and a downward economic spiral. This town stood tough and hung in there. And now, so will the entire Jersey Shore, united together. It?s a total communal effort now. When it hits the fan, we all come together.?

John-Manuel Andriote: Don't Be Angry at Spencer Cox; Be Angry at the Stigma That Pushes Gay Men Into Drugs and Unsafe Sex

Bob Hattoy, the late and hilariously funny environmental activist and friend of President Bill Clinton, used to crack us up at friends' gatherings in Washington, D.C., with his quip, "I used to be a legend. Now I'm a cautionary tale."

In 1992 Hattoy became the first openly gay man living with HIV/AIDS to address the Democratic National Convention. "I am a gay man," he told the convention, "and I have AIDS."

Hattoy succumbed to AIDS-related complications on March 4, 2007, at age 56. The New York Times obituary quoted AIDS activist Michael Petrelis as saying, "Bob Hattoy gave people with AIDS and gays in America hope with that [1992] speech."

On Dec. 18, 2012, another gay man who was something of a legend among AIDS activists also became a cautionary tale. Spencer Cox, age 44, died from advanced untreated HIV disease -- also known as AIDS - -after two decades of helping lead the charge against the epidemic that continues to ravage the lives of far too many gay men.

Cox became a leader in the fight against AIDS, joining ACT UP in New York in 1989 and co-founding the Treatment Action Group (TAG) to work with scientists in advancing the development of medical treatments for HIV.

"It's a great loss," said Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). "He was part of a historic group of people."

Mark Harrington, another legendary AIDS activist and the co-founder and executive director of TAG, told The New York Times that Cox had struggled with an addiction to crystal meth -- and had apparently stopped taking his HIV medication. "He saved the lives of millions," said Harrington, "but he couldn't save his own."

In his 1992 speech Bob Hattoy quoted Martin Luther King, Jr., who said, "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter."

It's high time for gay America finally to end the silence and speak out boldly about the plague of crystal meth addiction and abuse in our community that contributed to Spencer Cox's death -- and continues to destroy the lives of so many others. I have reported on it and have personally seen it destroy the careers, relationships and sanity of more than a few gay men.

But it's completely backwards to be angry at Cox, or anyone else, for inflicting such harm on themselves. Addiction is brutal, and beating people up for being addicted and harming themselves does nothing but reinforce the reasons that gay men turn to drugs and risk their lives to have unprotected sex with strangers of uncertain HIV status.

If we want to address the destruction of crystal meth and reckless sex in our community, we need to talk honestly about the reasons these things seem so appealing in the first place. Simply put, they offer vulnerable men the chance to anesthetize the pain of being gay and, for those of us living with HIV, the rejection and stigma we experience from other gay men.

Even in 2012 it is damned hard to be a gay man in America. For all the progress we've made toward almost being treated as equal, there continue to be daily challenges -- particularly for those of us who haven't constructed our lives in a way to exclude others who aren't gay. The ghetto might provide a sense of security, but it's not so different from the altered reality provided by drugs. Leave the safety of that segregation, come down from the trip, and reality can bite. Hard.

Being "openly gay" is a whole different experience for those of us who live in smaller towns and cities, surrounded by married heterosexuals and their children, possibly by our own family of origin. It's hard to be constantly reminded that you are "different," as most of us know from our childhoods.

And for anyone who believes the stigma of HIV among gay men is a thing of the past, I have news for you.

Take a look some time, if you don't secretly already, at the profiles on Manhunt, Adam4Adam or Craigslist. The code words "clean" and "DDF" (drug and disease-free) pop up everywhere. They don't need to spell it out to make it clear that these men consider those of us with HIV to be "unclean" and most certainly unworthy of their consideration. Ironically, of course, these men betray their delusional belief that strangers online actually know and will be truthful about their current HIV status in the heat of the sexual chase.

Too many gay men's lives have ended too soon because of the silence in our community about crystal meth addiction and the high-risk sex that tends to go hand in hand with it.

But instead of being angry at men like Spencer Cox for their self-destructive behavior, how about directing our anger where it really belongs: at the shame and stigma that is forced on us from both non-gay people and from other gay men?

In closing his 1992 speech, Bob Hattoy said, "We have hope. Hope gives me the chance of life." If we will commit ourselves to supporting one another's sense of hope, to building up instead of putting down, then just maybe we will see a reduction in the depression, despair, drug abuse and new HIV infections among gay men.

2012: The Year in TV Moments

Nick and Jess Brody in Homeland.

Nick and Jess Brody in Homeland.

Showtime, Dec. 9, 10:45 p.m.

Season 2 of?Homeland?was packed with tense, startling moments, many of them in motor vehicles that crashed, surveilled, went rogue, or screeched irresponsibly off. The show itself is not unlike a freeway. Subplots speed past each other until they collide; you are constantly fastening your seatbelt (terrorist Abu Nazir has landed in the U.S.!) or flipping off a reckless driver (Carrie, for the 5-millionth time,?wait for backup!). So it?s probably fitting that one of the finest scenes in the series takes place in an SUV. What is maybe more surprising is that the SUV is parked?with nary a gun, bomb, or urgently vibrating phone in sight.

But that could also be why the penultimate episode?s exchange between Jess and Nick Brody (Morena Baccarin and Damian Lewis), in a darkened car, is such a beauty. Suddenly the show hits the brakes, creating a breathing space for its characters? emotions. A SWAT team has just shot Abu Nazir after a nerve-racking chase through a mesh of underground tunnels; now we?re presented with resolution in a quieter register. And it?s this return to the human actors behind all the gunsmoke that reminds us why we watch this maddening, preposterous show in the first place.?

Because as much as?Homeland?is a counterpoint of terrorist and counterterrorist plots, it is also about a marriage coming apart. Jess and Nick earn our sympathy?they both want to make things work. But their stagnating relationship proves just as frustrating as the vice president?s politics or the CIA?s backbiting?as frustrating, actually, as the warped logic behind the Iraq war, since their inability to connect highlights the painful situation of returning U.S. soldiers.

Anyway, in this scene, the darkened car scene, teenage sweethearts Nick and Jess Brody try one last time to understand each other. They fail, of course: Jess can?t bring herself to hear what happened to Brody in the aftermath of Iraq?and they realize their relationship is over. Watching the last bits of the marriage fall away is a relief, though sad. It means Nick can move forward with Carrie and Jess can reunite with Mike. Nick absolves Jess of not being ?big enough? to support him in the wake of his tour and capture. (?There was nothing anyone could have done,? he says.) Jess accepts that Carrie knows her husband in a way she can?t and forgives him for loving her. The point, overall, is generosity: With malice toward none and charity for all, the writers supply the loveliest ending to a spent relationship we could have hoped for.

The break-up happens right after the Brodys are released from their crazy-making CIA safe house. In this quiet scene, the show allows us to see Nick and Jess exploring what it really means to be free.

I Am Not SICK with Diabetes!

Powerlifting competition in 2009 with a 300 lb. deadlift

Have you ever seen that look on a person?s face when you explain to them that you have diabetes? It?s that look that is filled with pity and sorrow. Following the look, sometimes, is something like, ?Oh, you poor thing,? or ?Oh dear, how horrible for you to have to suffer with that every day.?

Which brings me to the phrase, ?suffering with diabetes.? It?s often used in the media: ?So-and-so has been suffering with diabetes for 15 years.?

I am not suffering. I am not sick. I am not a sad case that deserves your pity. The word ?sick? implies weakness, struggle, misery, and woefully sitting on the couch.

Several few years ago, I was casually in conversation with a professor from my alma mater. I said something about ?helping people live healthy lives with diabetes.? His response was, ?Well, a person with diabetes can?t ever really be ?healthy.??

It was infuriating, because?yes, we can be healthy! More than healthy!?

Living with diabetes can be a reason to watch what we eat. To be?aware?more aware?of what we eat than the average non-diabetic. Living with diabetes can be a reason to exercise regularly, because we are?aware?of our own insulin sensitivity and how it?s impacted by less exercise, more exercise and weight-gain.?Living with diabetes can be the reason why I know how to estimate how many calories are on my plate while a non-diabetic might not have a clue of where to begin counting, or how.

Living with diabetes has led me, in my own life, to pursue health and fitness not as a hobby, but as a part of my being that keeps me happy, strong,?healthy,?and continually empowered to live a long, full life.

Many decades ago, sure, diabetes was essentially a death sentence. But if you stack up the list of everyday diabetics who finish marathons, teach yoga, win the olympics, compete in gymnastics?oh this list could go on and on! It would be a very long list, because the diagnosis of diabetes does not mean we are sick.

Instead, it means something in our body isn?t working correctly. And we are required to compensate for that by working harder to achieve and maintain health. But we are not sick?not if we choose to face our diabetes and live well. I am not sick with diabetes. I am strong, and maybe, even stronger than many of the non-diabetics around me.

Travel and Trains and Other Things: Business Travelers Are Finally ...

Yes, it's true: trains really can effectively compete with the airlines ... even for business travel.?That?s already happened on the east coast where Amtrak is now carrying some 75% of the traffic between New York and Washington.?

And it makes perfect sense. You get on an Acela in mid-town Manhattan and get off literally within sight of the Capitol three hours later. That simply cannot be done by plane ? not with airports so far from those city-centers, not with the security hassle, and not with flight delays. What?s more, the cost is comparable when you add in those expensive cab rides to and from the airports. But now business people are also discovering that the train makes sense when traveling intercity for meetings and sales appointments. If you?re in Washington and have a meeting to attend in Atlanta, how about taking Amtrak?s Crescent instead of flying? You?ll leave Washington at 6:30 in the evening, have a nice meal in the dining car, review your notes in your private roomette, get a good night?s sleep in a comfortable berth, and arrive refreshed in Atlanta at 8:15 the next morning. Total cost, including dinner and breakfast, from $250 to $400, depending on when you travel. Oh ? you say the meeting is in Chicago? No problem. Hop on the Capitol Limited this afternoon at 4:05 and you?ll be in Chicago at?? 8:45 tomorrow morning. Same deal: dinner, breakfast and a comfortable bed included ? all for about $350. And the train-instead-of-plane concept isn?t limited to the east coast. Here?s a story from the New York Times about a businessman who needed to travel from Tucson to Houston and discovered that cut-backs in airline schedules turned a two-hour flight into a full day of wasted time, plus the additional expense of a night in a hotel. Later, he realized that same amount of time could have been spent on Amtrak?s Sunset Limited. Here?s the point: More and more, all across the country, train travel is becoming a practical alternative to the airlines and to the automobile. So just imagine if the travel times now offered by Amtrak were cut in half! That would indeed be the case if these and other major cities across the country were linked by high-speed rail. Everywhere else in the world, they understand that. The Europeans have had it figured out for almost 40 years. The Chinese have just inaugurated the longest ever high-speed rail line. Spain has linked all their major cities with high-speed rail. And ? Oh, yes ? they?re building a new high-speed rail line in Uzbekistan! Meanwhile, here in the U.S., we?re still being subjected to people blathering that high-speed rail is ?just another government boondoggle?. Well dadgummit ... it?s time we started ignoring the yahoos. It?s time to get moving!

Do You Know that Your Child Is Sexual Too! | Psychology Today

?

?

By John T. Chirban

?

Sexuality begins in the womb because it starts with touch. After birth, being held and caressed mark the earliest connection that infants have with intimacy and love. These connections come directly from you and set the stage for your child?s comfort with his or her body.

We all seek touch. Studies confirm that we are healthier when we are touched, hugged, tickled, and massaged.1 When infants are touched in a loving and appropriate way, they learn to touch their own body in ways that are healthful and pleasurable. This wholesome model of touch continues throughout their development.

If ever there was an easy and welcome opportunity to pursue touch, it?s through the many tickling and hugging opportunities that arise during childhood. Permit yourself to celebrate these wonderful moments with your kids. ?

Kids are like sponges?they learn about our feelings toward sexuality through our words, actions, and interactions. The way that you relate to your child?s body shows your level of comfort with your child and with sex.

A natural springboard for starting conversations with your kids about sexuality emerges from developing good hygiene. Helping your children relate to their body through caring for their body teaches ownership and awareness of sexuality. Cleaning privates is an important topic in its own right, and these conversations introduce discussions about sex, from naming body parts accurately to establishing boundaries.

How do you handle children?s jokes about going to the bathroom? What?s your reaction to your toddler seeing you naked? How do you respond when other adults bring up sex in the presence of your child? Early parent-child interactions establish your child?s introduction to understanding and sex. Your cues set your child?s comfort level for talking to you about sexual issues. Kids develop (or fail to develop) comfort about their sexuality through exploration, play, interactions, and relationships. By opening these avenues in your relationships with your children and helping them understand their experiences, you help form their confidence to understand sexuality and themselves.

You should talk to your child as early as you can about proper and improper touch and explain that her or his body is under her or his control. Explain the necessity of telling you or a responsible adult if they ever feel uncomfortable about the way someone touches them.

?

BIRTH ? 3 years old

???? A ? Provide loving, caring interactions (tickle, hug, kiss). ??

???? B) ?Recognize, acknowledge (name), and support body exploration, especially during hygiene and toilet training

???? C) ?Monitor social exposure and models--from TV to personal contacts (babysitters, friends, family)

DON?T:

???? A) ?Shame because of what child does or says sexually

???? B) ?Reference what child does sexually as "funny" or "bad"

???? C) ?Project adult behaviors onto infant, e.g., baby boy touching mother's breast: "He's his father's son."

War of Words: Myth-Busting Search Engine Optimization - Online ...

Mythbusting Search Engine Optimization SEOIn last week?s post about myth-busting social media, I asked what other marketing tactic or channel has attracted as much conjecture, blind advocacy and malarkey. ?Only SEO can compare to social media when it comes to the volume of misperceptions and out-dated information posing as ?best practices? online.

They say that the only things you can count on in life are death and taxes. Also, that search engines will change.

Google runs over?20,000 experiments per year and at any given time, 50-200 different versions of Google?s core algorithm are helping billions of searchers find what they?re looking for. ? Add to that, personalization by location, past search history and the influences of the social graph and you have one of the most complex and fast changing systems ever created.

As the final post in my Mythbusting at NMX series (along with Content Marketing?&?Social Media), I?ll address just 3 of the many, many myths about SEO that are polluting and distracting marketers from fully leveraging natural search as part of their online marketing mix.

Myth 1: ?SEO is Dead

There are many who say that Google has made so many improvements to it?s search quality that SEO no longer has any effect on websites in the search results (SERPs). It?s impossible to create cause and effect relationships between perceived ?ranking factors? and positions in the SERPs because each person?s search experience could potentially be different.

SEO is Dead

More than a few pundits say that personalization, social media integration and improvements in combating webspam or manipulation of algorithmic loopholes have rendered the effectiveness of SEO tactics as useless.

Myth Busted:? Claiming SEO is dead is a near national past time for the attention starved.?Many journalists and bloggers make the statement just to stir up the SEO bee?s nest and create online buzz.

For perspective, let?s consider the data: Over 100 billion people search Google every month and marketers spent?$23 billion?on the search marketing in 2012 to attract, engage and convert those searchers into customers. While most of that amount was spent on paid search, billions were spent on SEO. Anything characterized with the word ?billions? doesn?t sound dead to me.

Search is?inseparable?from the experience of using the internet. Search connects you to reputable and trustworthy information, where and when you need it. As long as people are searching and content can be ranked, there will be a demand to optimize.

The practice of SEO is bigger than keywords and links. Essentially,?SEO is Marketing.?Modern, sustainable optimization isn?t about exploiting algorithmic loopholes, it?s a way of thinking that centers around hypothesis, implementation and continuous refinement of performance based on data. ?I?ve written an entire book about a holistic view of optimization that guides marketers from planning to implementation to scale.

Here?s one of the most common examples of this approach: Through a combination of creative keyword research, social topic tracking and insight from web analytics, our team recommended that a company add new content, optimized for new target phrases. Those new pages and digital assets were promoted to attract links and social shares resulting in a new market of customers easily being able to find the client?s services. Optimizing keywords used to discover the content along with testing of offers to provide the most attractive call to action resulted in continued increases in traffic and conversions. Along with the creative and content aspects of SEO, technical optimization best practices are applied at the same time, ranging from increasing page load speed to connecting optimized content with social channels like Google+.

Make no mistake, search engines are far from perfect and they benefit from great SEO work. Modern SEO is art and science, building upon creative and technical skills that make it easy for search engines to find, copy and sort your content in the search results. Modern SEO is also about creating an experience that helps search engines provide people what they?re looking for at the time they need it. Modern SEO consultants provide companies with insight to optimize the performance of their customers? search experience whether the intent is to buy a product or find answers to questions about a product already purchased, so that in the end, everybody wins.

Myth 2: ?SEO Can Only Be Done by SEOs

SEO has it?s roots in the IT and web development field because before there were easy to use content management systems, it took a web developer to make any SEO edits to the company website. There?s a bit of a protectionist culture within IT that has carried on to the SEO community and for good reason. ?Numerous websites have suffered self inflicted disasters from half-informed marketers deciding to make changes to a website without any consideration of the impact with search engines.

A common example is a new web design with less text, fewer pages and a different content management system using say, php instead of asp. For good measure, maybe a new domain name and webhost too. ?Another example is when content is updated on a website and the careful on-page optimization is overwritten by inspired wordsmiths having their way with brand messaging and a healthy dose of metaphors, irony, puns and all around snark. Or what about the decision to copy a competitors tactic of hosting multiple versions of a website on different keyword-hyphenated domains and buying links from other sites to boost PageRank? The competition is doing it, so why can?t we?

Myth Busted:? SEO involves a range of audits including keyword research, technical SEO, content and copywriting, linking and social media. Consulting an experienced SEO practitioner before making major changes to a website is smart. But of the 5 types of audits I mentioned above, many include tasks that can and should be implemented by others in an organization.

This is particularly true with content creation and social community work. With the right training of staff plus ongoing feedback via KPIs and marketing performance, companies can scale optimized content and social media efforts?significantly?with staff that are not trained SEOs.

The practice of SEO has been around over 15 years and while it?s been perceived as a ?dark art? in the past, this is not the case for many SEO best practices. There are abundant sources of smart information about the various disciplines within SEO available on blogs like this one?or on Search Engine Watch, Search Engine Land,?at industry conferences like SES, SMX, and?Pubcon as well as at related events like NMX, Content Marketing World and the new Social Media Marketing World. There?s also the search engines themselves, including Google Webmaster Tools and Bing Webmaster Tools.

Definitely bring a smart SEO in for strategy, for technical issues and for oversight of implementation at regular intervals. Train content creation staff on keyword research, copywriting and content promotion. Arm social media teams with keyword glossaries and knowledge about link building. Help Public Relations staff understand the value of keyword use, social media optimization and links from 3rd party media sources. A team effort is what wins in SEO, not siloed, mystical black box over-promises made by a few individuals.

Myth 3: ?If You Don?t Optimize Your Website, You?ll Never Succeed Online

Billions of people search the web every month looking for exactly what your company offers. Ignoring SEO is akin to making it easier for your customers to do business with the competition. Companies that ignore the sheer volume of interest expressed by prospective customers that are actively looking (through search engines) are doomed to fail.

Myth Busted:? ?About 5 years ago I gave a presentation called, ?How to UnGoogle Your Online Marketing? based on this post in 2006 because so much SEO advice was conflicting and or loopholes inevitably to be closed by Google?s webspam team. The idea was, by implementing tactics as if search engines didn?t exist, marketers could create additional marketing channels and realize the added benefit of better search visibility at the same time.

New companies often consider SEO as a leading strategy, thinking that if they apply SEO best practices they will be able to launch their new company website from scratch and appear at the top of search results. The truth is, new websites should probably focus on advertising and publicity to attract attention since those are methods that can be implemented within a short timeframe and deliver immediate results.?It takes time to develop content that can compete in search and attract both links from other websites and the social interactions that will help the content become ?the best answer? for a competitive query.

A retailer I talked to about the pros and cons of social networking and SEO said something profound: ?I value a new network connection more than a high ranking. Relationships are more important to me than clicks on search results.? ?On one hand, she has a point, but the relationship isn?t worth as much to her business unless they become a customer.

A really simple example of how not explicitly optimizing actually reaps optimized results is the website for my book, Optimize. ?Topics and content were created with the audience in mind with only basic SEO. The site uses the word ?Optimize? in logical places because that?s the name of the book. Promotion of the site was focused on publicity and social channels resulting in mentions on sites like Forbes and?Entrepreneur?Magazine but also showing up in the top 5 for the word ?optimize? out of 122,000,000 search results.?The moral of this story is that there is a time and a place for SEO and that it?s possible earn prominent search visibility without going overboard on SEO tactics

Is it possible to attract, engage and convert customers successfully without employing a SEO program? ?Yes. ?Is it easier? No. ?Would it be better to implement SEO best practices from day one and leverage other ?UnGoogle? channels to attract traffic? Absolutely.

This series is a preview to my presentation at the NMX?conference (BlogWorld) on January 8th (Tuesday) at the Rio in Las Vegas.?Here?s the official session description:

Search Engine Optimization: Simple Tactics for Better Traffic ...

As an experienced and successful SEO and internet marketing company, Mango Media has observed several kinds of digital challenges in its lifespan till date. Search engine optimization is about obtaining high ranking in search engine results. In simpler terms, it refers to the process in which you reach out to your target customer. Working around contemporary thumb rules of SEO can fetch your business the much desired traffic for its success. In order to optimize your website or web pages; it is important you understand the basics of SEO and its modus operandi. While this is no rocket science, it necessitates continued market research and experience in handling SEO challenges. Mango Media, therefore, becomes your preferred SEO and internet marketing company that does not just build your business? brand but also ensures that the name sustains and marks success.

Search Engine Optimization: Top Traffic Generating Tricks

Search engine optimization is that magic wand that brings more visitors to your website. The higher the number of visitors and returning users, the larger the conversion rate of customers. This concept is referred to as generating traffic and can be done through certain specific tactics that involve the web, creativity and professionally attractive mechanisms. Search engines seem to be enthralled by target article sites. One of the easiest ways of bringing traffic to your website is by placing articles on various topics in article directories. Incorporating your website links in these articles will deliver the traffic to your website. Business blogs are another means of promoting your website. In these blogs, you can capture all business related information and also allot room for a discussion forum wherein a potential customer can discuss with you on your business services.

Link Building by SEO and Internet Marketing Company

Well crafted press releases complement internet marketing initiatives. Posting effective press releases in different online press release wires and placing links in every release is important to channelize traffic to your website. Link building is one of the most important and effective tools adopted by an SEO and internet marketing company in generating visitors for your website. In the digital world, most work is done through links. Visitors come to your website primarily through links. Hence it is extremely important to use quality and reliable link sources. Incorporating links in inappropriate websites or web content will drive your customers away. Link exchange should be done with relevant websites so that visitors can relate to your business.

Link exchange is also possible through forum marketing. However, make sure you choose a forum that is most relevant to your business. A signature box in the forum enables you to provide your website link thereby increasing traffic to your site. An important point to observe in links is the piece of text that you use. This is no random combination but should pertain to the right set of words understood by search crawlers. When the main search term is incorporated in your link, search engines will find it a simpler task to index those links. It is also necessary to steer clear from using identical text in all links.

Green steel inventor wins innovation award | Eco News ...

Leading Australian researcher Professor Veena Sahajwalla has won the $30,000 top prize in the Innovation Challenge awards run by The Australian newspaper.

A passionate recycler, she was honoured for her patented ?green steel? process, in which old rubber tyres and plastic are used to replace some of the coke in the electric arc furnaces that generate power for the production of steel.

The revolutionary approach has been commercialised locally and overseas by Australia?s largest manufacturer of long steel products, OneSteel.

As a result it has already prevented more than a million tyres from ending up in landfill and helped reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

Scientia Professor Sahajwalla is director of the University of New South Wales Centre for Sustainable Materials Research and Technology.

Her interest in mining the mountains of rubbish and waste materials produced by modern society and re-using them in industrial processes or to create new goods was sparked early in life.

?As a child growing up in India I walked to school past huge waste dumps picked over by desperately poor communities,? she said.

?I always wanted to turn that waste into something we could absorb back into industrial production.?

The Australian, a News Limited publication, reported that the innovation competition attracted hundreds of entries, including a folding flat-pack house; a DNA test that would help breed horns out of beef cattle; a wave energy converter; a computer program that allows students to conduct laboratory experiments on the internet; and do-it-yourself hearing aids.

Professor Sahajwalla won the $5000 prize in the Manufacturing and Hi-tech Design category of the competition as well as the overall $25,000 prize.

She is Associate Dean Strategic Industry Relations of the UNSW Faculty of Science and is one of Australia?s best-known engineers and scientists, having been a judge on the ABC TV program The New Inventors.

She has received many awards including the 2011 National Nokia Business Innovation Award at the Telstra Business Women?s Awards and the Banksia Environmental Foundation?s 2012 GE Eco Innovation Award for Individual Excellence.

In May she was appointed as a commissioner on the Australian government?s Climate Commission.
