Only Never is Too Late for a Foster Child | Juvenile Justice ...

Hope?s* earliest memories are with her younger sister and her mother. But these are not the fond memories of a warm and carefree childhood, rather they are full of the pain she felt from watching her mother struggle with drug addiction.

Hope?s mother loved her two girls, but did not consistently provide for the basic needs of her children, often leaving them for long periods of time with relatives with no explanation.

At the age of 8, Hope?s life changed forever. Her relatives, realizing that the girls had been abandoned, and deciding they would not or could not care for the two children, called Georgia?s Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS) and the children entered foster care.

Michelle Barclay

Thus began a whirlwind of foster homes, group homes, assessments, meetings and court dates. During these first few months, it was discovered that Hope had been sexually abused during one of her mother?s disappearances and was diagnosed with a number of mental health and behavioral issues. Shortly thereafter, she was introduced to a person who would come to be the most stable adult connection she would encounter for years; her therapist Dr. Tammy Coots. Weekly therapy began.

Hope is a beautiful and intelligent girl, so it was no surprise there was a lot of interest in her from potentially adoptive parents. What these parents did not understand, however, was that Hope was still in contact with her mother, still felt her mother?s love for her, and would come to view adoption as turning her back on that love.

The first adoptive home did not work out. When it became clear that adoption was on the horizon, Hope began acting out against everyone in the home and at school. She would lie, steal, manipulate, and become verbally and physically aggressive ? first weekly, then daily, then, as the date of the finalization of the adoption drew closer, constantly. The adoptive foster parents changed their minds and Hope was removed from their home.

A year later, another adoptive home took in Hope and her sister. When adoption was imminent, Hope again engaged in the same disruptive and ?testing? behaviors. This time, the foster parents continued with the adoption of Hope?s sister but asked that Hope be removed from their home.

A year or two later, a third adoptive home was identified, and Hope moved in with the family. Sticking to her pattern, She engaged in her behaviors as the adoption date approached. But this time, two days before the finalization, it was Hope who broke down crying and hysterically begged her case manager and foster parents not to go through with it. She felt she simply could not give up on her mother, thinking that is what adoption meant.

In the midst of her movement in and out of adoptive homes, there was one foster home that made a mark on Hope. It was a place where she felt truly at home. From 2005-2007, Hope lived in the foster home a woman we?ll call Ms. Lisa.

Ms. Lisa could not commit to adopting Hope at that time, but she was committed to Hope in all other aspects. A bond had been created that existed long after Hope left Ms. Lisa?s home. In 2010, after eight years, eight separate placements which included three failed adoptive placements, Hope?s savvy case manager remembered that bond and called Ms. Lisa. Hope was placed back in Ms. Lisa?s home, and this time, it would be permanent.

In 2011, Hope?s case was identified for review by the?Cold Case Project?(a project designed to review cases of children with long stays in foster care). ?It appeared that some additional ammunition may be needed to find a permanent home for this child.

Hope began having therapeutic contact with her mother. She intended to continue her relationship with her mother, but she wanted Ms. Lisa to be her life-long ?family? resource. Dr. Coots, still Hope?s weekly therapist, had recommended months before that all discussions of adoption cease, and when that option was taken off of the table for Hope, her behavior and well-being dramatically improved. Hope and Ms. Lisa agreed that Ms. Lisa should become her permanent guardian, an option that would not terminate the legal relationship between Hope and her mother. Dr. Coots agreed.

Jenifer Carreras

The state?s case manager and supervisor and the Cold Case team worked to obtain state assistance for Ms. Lisa so she could continue to provide for Hope?s needs. On Sept. 6, 2011, after nine years in DFCS custody and at the age of 17, permanency was finalized for Hope.

Finally, she had a legal guardian and, more importantly, a forever home.

*Hope is not her real name, but her story is real. This teen was part of a statewide review called the?Cold Case Project. The?Cold Case Project?is being conducted?in full partnership and transparency with the?Division of Family and Children Services?.? The project is made possible by the?Casey Family Program?funds.

Michelle Barclay is?project director of the?Supreme Court of Georgia?s Committee on Justice for Children?at the Administrative Office of the Courts.? Michelle and Andy Barclay?founded and endowed the Barton Child Law and Policy Clinic in partnership with the Emory University School of Law. Jenifer Carreras is managing attorney for the Law Office of Jen Carreras, LLC, and is a 2011 Cold Case Fellow. Ms. Carreras is a former attorney for the Department of Family and Children Services and devotes her law practice to children?s legal issues.

(AP Photo/Ross D. Franklin, File)

(AP) ? It was nearly two years ago, hours before the New York Yankees' World Series opener against Philadelphia. As players prepared, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman went up to his office and telephoned a half-dozen of his counterparts, among them Detroit's Dave Dombrowski.

"I remember Dave saying, 'Hey, what are you doing calling me? Isn't this Game 1 of the World Series? You've got a big game tonight,'" Cashman recalled. "I was like, 'Hey, I'm out of it. I already messed this team up enough. Nothing more I can do. So now I've got to talk about the 2010 team and how I can mess that one up.'"

Fast forward 3? weeks.

Dombrowski was driving from Detroit to Chicago with his family for a Thanksgiving visit with his parents. His cell phone rang, and Arizona GM Josh Byrnes was on the line.

"He said he talked to Brian. There was the potential of a three-way deal," Dombrowski related. "Would we be open-minded to it? And that sort of got that ball rolling."

And so began the talks that led to an unusual seven-player trade that helped build three division winners. Come this weekend, the Yankees, Tigers and Diamondbacks all will be in the playoffs ? Detroit and New York playing each other.

Detroit sent All-Star center fielder Curtis Granderson to New York, which dealt right-hander Ian Kennedy to Arizona, and lefty reliever Phil Coke and outfield prospect Austin Jackson to the Tigers. Detroit traded All-Star pitcher Edwin Jackson to the Diamondbacks, and Arizona sent touted young pitchers Max Scherzer and Daniel Schlereth to the Tigers.

Byrnes had called Cashman before contacting Dombrowski, feeling out the Yankees GM on what he might be looking for. Then running the Diamondbacks, and now San Diego's senior vice president for baseball operations, Byrnes returned from the GM meetings in Chicago, gathered his aides and guessed New York was focused on Granderson.

"We sat down as a staff and kind of played around with it on a dry erase board and felt like the Yankees were the logical spot," Byrnes said. "We didn't know that. We just thought about that. Granderson was a logical fit. Obviously, they probably had to assess that winter with (Johnny) Damon and (Brett) Gardner and some other things, how they wanted their outfield to be."

It took six weeks of talks from Cashman's initial call until the deal was finalized on Dec. 9. Word started to leak out the day before, after the three GMs reached a tentative deal while meeting in Cashman's suite at the winter meetings in Indianapolis.

Granderson remembers where he was when he found out.

"I was shopping at a West Elm store in Chicago," he said. "I started getting text messages from my friends."

He put up MVP-type numbers this year, with team-leading totals of 41 homers and 119 RBIs. Austin Jackson, his replacement in the Detroit outfield, had 10 homers and 45 RBIs, played above-average defense and at age 24 has time to improve.

Scherzer (14-9) is tied for second on the Tigers in wins, Coke is their No. 1 lefty out of the bullpen and also made spot starts, and Schlereth (3.51 ERA) was a key relief component for Detroit.

Edwin Jackson pitched a no-hitter for Arizona against Tampa Bay in June last year, then was redealt a month later to the Chicago White Sox in July 2010 for Daniel Hudson, who at 16-10 is second in wins for the Diamondbacks this year.

Kennedy has become a star in Arizona, going 21-4 with a 2.88 ERA, a performance that could earn him the NL Cy Young Award. He had impressed with the Yankees during three starts at the end of the 2007 season, but he was out for much of 2008 with a strained muscle near his right ribcage and bursitis in his right shoulder blade. He pitched in just one big league game in 2009 because of surgery to remove an aneurysm from beneath his right biceps. The trade moved him a lot closer to his California home than the Bronx.

"I always heard my name up in trades every single year, every single offseason, so I didn't really believe it at first," Kennedy said. "I didn't know how to react. You don't know whether to act excited because you get to come to a new team, come to the West Coast."

As often is the case in baseball these days, money was a factor. While the Yankees took on the contract of Granderson, who is making $8.25 million, Detroit received four players whose salaries total less than $1.9 million.

"For us, there are four guys on our ballclub that are all young service guys," Dombrowski said. "Scherzer after this year is still three years away from free agency. Coke, same way with him."

And young players got a chance for playing time, which rarely happens with the Yankees.

"I think it worked out for the best, for the players and for the teams," Austin Jackson said. "I was excited to get the opportunity and try to get my big league career started, but I was kind of sad to leave a lot of my friends that I made over there."

When Kennedy left the Yankees, he briefly allowed himself to think ahead. At some point, whether by trade or free agency, there could be pinstripes in his future.

"I told Cashman, 'I know a lot of guys come back, and I know this is a business, and I could end up with the Yankees another day,'" Kennedy said. "He goes: 'Yep, a lot of guys come back.'"

'Autistic' Mice Help Researchers Study Disorder (LiveScience.com)

Researchers have engineered a new type of mouse that models autism and could aid in the development of treatments for the disorder, a new study says.

The mice exhibit behaviors very similar to those of people with autism, including repetitive behaviors and social irregularities, the researchers said. And treating the mice with an autism drug reduced the repeated behaviors, just as it does in people, the researchers said.

The study shows "one can effectively model autism in a mouse and get a lot of the same clinical features," said study researcher Dr. Daniel Geschwind, a professor of neurology at the University of California, Los Angeles School of Medicine.

The mice could also help scientists understand exactly what goes wrong in the brain that leads to autism's development, the researchers said.

Autistic mice

The researchers engineered the mice to be missing a single gene, called CNTNAP2, which is thought to be involved in speech and language. Certain mutations in this gene have been linked with an increased risk of autism, and some aberrations in this gene cause epilepsy in addition to autism.

Mice without this gene spent less time interacting with their fellow rodents, and displayed repetitive behaviors, including grooming and digging, the researchers said. The mice also emitted fewer distress calls when separated from their mothers as pups, and were hyperactive. Autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are thought to share underlying genetic abnormalities.

The findings also suggest CNTNAP2 is involved in brain development: certain brain cells of the mice lacking the gene did not migrate properly during development to their final position in the brain, Geschwind said. And groups of neurons in the brain had problems communicating.

Currently, there are no pharmacological treatments available for some symptoms of autism, Geschwind said.

"This gives us an opportunity to begin to test drugs that might affect social behavior and develop drugs that affect social cognition," he said.

Models for autism

Because the genetics of autism are so complex, there's unlikely to be one type of mouse that can be used for all studies of autism, said Jason Lerch, a neuroscientist at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, who was not involved in the work.

"I don?t think we'll ever have one autistic mouse," Lerch said.

But the mouse made in this study allows researchers to model one part of autism, and the more models available, the more opportunities there are try to understand the underlying biology of the disease, Lerch said.

The study will be published tomorrow (Sept. 30) in the journal Cell.

Pass it on: Mice that exhibit behaviors similar to those seen in autism may help researchers develop therapies for the disorder.

How A Small Red Fruit Performs Taste Miracles For 'Flavor Trippers'

The miracle fruit from West Africa has a chemical that binds to and boosts sweet taste receptors in the presence of acidic foods. Courtesy of Keiko Abe

The miracle fruit from West Africa has a chemical that binds to and boosts sweet taste receptors in the presence of acidic foods.

A tiny crimson berry from West Africa discovered by Westerners almost three centuries ago can turn lemons into lemonade and vinegar into apple cider, at least as far as the tongue is concerned.

The chemical miraculin in "miracle fruit," as the berry is known, makes sour things eaten immediately afterward taste sweet, and sweet things taste super sweet. And it's inspired a small counterculture of "flavor trippers" who get together to swirl it (or a tablet containing it) around on their tongues and then sample a parade of foods to showcase its mind-bending qualities.

But how it works, and, more importantly, how it might go from cool party trick to potential weapon against obesity, was little understood, until now.

?

In a paper in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, a group of Japanese chemists explain how exactly miraculin hijacks taste buds.

Keiko Abe, a professor of biological chemistry at the University of Tokyo and the lead author of the paper, says miraculin binds tightly to sweet taste receptors and then pushes them into high gear only if pH in the mouth starts to drop into the acidic range from something sour ? like when you're eating an unripe strawberry or a lime. Miraculin's bind is so tight that the effect lasts for 1 to 2 hours.

Miraculin's influence over sweet receptors is so great, it turns out, it can even push other sweet tastes out. "When other sweet substances exist together in the mouth, it is likely that miraculin almost monopolizes the sweet taste receptor," Abe tells The Salt.

The first time she ate the fruit in 1989, Abe says, she was "surprised and excited" by the fruit's power ? so excited that she dropped what she was working on to investigate miraculin.

But Abe is far from the only one caught in miraculin's honeyed vise. A number of chefs have also been experimenting with miracle fruit, both to entertain diners and help diabetics and the under-nourished.

In Boston, Chef Eliana Hussain at the Cambridge School of Culinary Arts designed a flavor tripping menu earlier this year for Mystery Meet, a group of adventurous diners. Seth Resler, its founder, says the eight-course menu included dishes such as citrus salad with mint and yogurt and a kooky combination of shrimp and strawberries.

"It was unusual," Resler says. "The strawberries tasted like they were dunked in powdered sugar, while the shrimp didn't taste different. The best thing to do is try everything before and after, because the flavors can change a lot in just an hour."

Chicago chef Homaro Cantu, co-host of the Discovery Channel's Future Food show, has also taken a liking to miracle fruit. He and pastry chef Ben Roche are working on a miracle berry diet book with desserts that contain no sugar, Wired reports, and feature it at their newest restaurant, iNG.

They also say it could be used to fight hunger by making nutritious but unpalatable plants, like grasses, taste good to people who have trouble growing or buying other kinds of food.

Japanese food chemist Abe agrees that miraculin could be put to work outside of the flavor tripping world. It could be a non-calorie sweetener for patients with diabetes, obesity and other metabolic syndromes, she says.

But for all these good intentions, price might be an obstacle. Mberry, one company that's trying to cash in on the miracle fruit rage, charges $42 for just 10 fresh berries (shipping included). That, sadly, is no miracle.

Sneaking up on the glassy transition of water

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2011) ? Researchers claim to have settled a long-standing debate over the exact temperature at which water transforms into an exotic glass-like substance believed to be present in comets and other icy objects in the outer solar system, as well as in the coldest regions of Earth's atmosphere.

Rapid cooling of ordinary water or compression of ordinary ice: either of these can transform normal H2O into an exotic substance that resembles glass in its transparency, brittleness, hardness, and luster. Unlike everyday ice, which has a highly organized crystalline structure, this glass-like material's molecules are arranged in a random, disorganized way. Scientists have studied glassy water for decades, but the exact temperature at which water acquires glass-like properties has been the subject of heated debate for years, due to the difficulty of manipulating pure glassy water in laboratories.

Now, in a paper published in the AIP's Journal of Chemical Physics, physicists from the University of Pisa and the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche at the Institute for Chemical-Physical Processes (CNR-IPCF) in Pisa, Italy, claim to have put an end to the controversy. Unlike previous attempts in which scientists tried to measure the transition temperature directly, the CNR team "snuck up" on the answer by inferring the temperature from a thorough study of the dynamics of water. They examined water's behavior in bulk and at the nano-scale, at high temperatures and low, combining their own experimental results with 15 decades' worth of research by colleagues.

They also measured the glass transition temperature and the molecular behavior of water that had been doped with other materials, and used this information to set lower and upper boundaries on the transition temperature for pure water. Taken together, their evidence points to a magic number of approximately 136 Kelvin (-137 Celsius). The authors say their work supports traditional views of this phenomenon and refutes recent claims that the transition is above 160 Kelvin (-113 Celsius). The research could find uses in technology associated with food science and the cryopreservation of biological materials, as well as in the study of water in comets and on the surface of planets.
