ENV 222?: Environmental Controversy (Interdisciplinary Study) Spring 2013

Through lecture, field experiences, guest presentations and group projects, students will explore the complexity within a number of key environmental controversies, exploring its scientific, social, cultural, ethical, legal and personal contexts. These socio scientific issues can be described as, ?ill defined, multidisciplinary, value laden, and constrained by missing knowledge? as opposed to more traditional issues that are based on approaches using disciplinary knowledge, are objectively oriented, engage the ?right? procedures, and often result in a single right/wrong answer. SSI is also a pedagogical strategy with clearly defined goals: it aims to stimulate and promote individual intellectual development in morality and ethics, as well as awareness of the interdependence between science and society.

Prerequisite: two of the following: GEOG 102 or REM 100; and EVSC 100 or GEOG 111. Students who have received credit for ENV 399 (Environmental Controversy) cannot receive credit for ENV 222.

The social networking implications of wills, grandparenting, and ...

Did you think you would need a Facebook executor in your will? ?Bet not. There is more than enough challenge dealing with Facebook and its side effects while we are still kicking. But sure enough, from the Wall Street Journal: "The U.S. General Services Administration recommends people set up a ?social-media will,? review the privacy policies and terms and conditions of each website on which they have a presence and stipulate in their traditional will that the 'online executor' get a copy of the death certificate." Some are even valuing the material they have posted online. McAfee?s survey last year found that U.S. consumers value their digital assets, on average, at nearly $37,000, although US consumers valued content at $55,000: "That includes photos, projects, hobbies, personal records, career information, entertainment and email." This baffles me. It would seem that if you trust someone to be the executor of your will in which your bank accounts, home, and valuables are at stake, your online material would roll into that.

Grandparents and Skype ? the good, the bad -- and how we're not there yet. MetLife?s recent report on Grandparents noted that while only 12% of grandparents use Skype and 24% use Facebook, 39% of grandparents have a grandchild living more than 500 miles away.? But read through this recent Globe article ? based on interviews with various upscale and Skype-competitive grandparents -- and it becomes clear that 12-month and 18-month old children have no grasp as to where their grandparent physically is or what they are looking at. "But despite almost daily video calls, when her grandmother came to town recently from Ohio, and Emma saw her in person, the little girl started to cry, reacting almost as if her grandmother was a stranger."? But her grandmother IS physically a stranger ? this is akin to the misnomer of Facebook 'friending' ? which until I read the Globe article, I seriously thought would exclude participation (not just account sign on) of children under the age of two. Skype babysitting is next.

Thinking about elevators and the elderly. ?If you had a charged device on which to read it, this week there was plenty of advice on keeping a device charged in a power outage. But in the aftermath of the monumental Hurricane Sandy, I was ?reading this comment in the New York Daily News that made me shudder -- a 51-year-old who has to walk up and down from his 26 floor apartment because the electricity is off. "Now, we have to walk the stairs. It's a lot easier going down."? Feasible for him, but think about all of the NORCs in New York, the high rise buildings filled with aging people, increasingly in need of services provided by the city?s housing authority, by organizations like SelfHelp and others. Without working elevators, the disabled and elderly are trapped in these buildings whose daily means of exit or delivery of supplies is via an elevator. Do they have a landline, an already-charged phone to call for help, or are they without cell coverage? Remember the Boston local social network that formed in 2011 to help out with snow shoveling? At some point down the line, I hope to read more about the local social networks (online or off) that helped out NORC residents during this hurricane.

Cardiovascular problems in children and adolescents | Fitness and ...

Cardiovascular problemsUntil recently, we thought that the risk of suffering a heart attack was a problem relating to adults and, even more, who led a carefree life demanding or health care. However, in recent times, the cardiovascular problems in children and adolescents are increasingly common, forcing us to change our beliefs and accept that none of us is exempt when it comes to heart.

This mutation in the risk group is not a mere coincidence, but responds to changes in the methodology of life that society has begun to implement with the passage of time and the progress of urbanization, more technological development, new ways to spend our free time and living in an accelerated manner. These changes resulted mainly two major issues facing youth today and that goes hand in hand with each other: obesity and sedentary lifestyle, two risk factors for cardiovascular problems.

Obesity

For a long time, obesity has become almost a taboo subject. Nobody named for fear of discrimination or feel discriminated. However, today we understand that this is not simply an eating disorder, but it is much stronger, is a disease that can cause numerous other health problems, especially when it comes to childhood obesity.

The way to reduce this index is that the family involved. It is difficult for a child or teen can understand how risky it is to be obese and more complicated still, is to accept to make a diet to counteract this problem.

It is therefore important that the family change their eating habits, choosing to eat healthy, your diet by removing the fatty foods and sugary drinks. Few teens who cook their own food so the menu to be given depends almost entirely on their parents, so to avoid dealing with a heart problem, pay attention to how we feed our children.

A sedentary lifestyle

If we talk about obesity, we can not avoid associating with inactivity. A poor diet is often added inactivity experienced by children and teens of this century. Today, both when they meet their obligations as they enjoy their free time, young people are sitting: at school, at your computer, playing video games or watching television.

This sedentary lifestyle certainly affects the body and affects the cardiovascular system related diseases. And here, again, is the family that should make the decision to send their children to play sports, join them to put aside the closure and enjoy the outdoors.

The heart is a muscle and that is healthy and strong must be exercised. Encourage your children to do exercise , jump, run, play, become tired and above all, breathe fresh air is the best way to help them prevent a possible heart problem.

NYC Subway And Hurricane Sandy - Business Insider

The flooding from "Frankenstorm" Sandy has been everything New York City was expecting (if not worse), and it looks like the long term effects could be serious.

The subway was closed today and looks likely to be definitely closed tomorrow, but that may just be the beginning. This photo, tweeted out by Port Authority NY + NY, shows how bad the situation is at underground stations.

MTA workers are already saying it could take until the end of the week to have the subway running again, but no-one is really even sure of that. The WSJ explains that saltwater has a particularly bad effect on the subway:

Salt can eat at motors, metal fasteners and the electronic parts, some many decades old, that keep the system running. Salt water, and the deposits it leaves behind, degrades the relays that run the signal system, preventing train collisions. Salt water also conducts electricity, which can exacerbate damage to signals if the system isn't powered down before a flood.

The NYC subway has been flooded before (during the nor'easter of 1992) and service was brought back to most lines within days. However, the same storm flooded PATH trains ? which were forced to remain closed for 10 days after the storm.

So how long will it take? One MTA official has given a rough estimate ? and it wasn't exactly encouraging:

UPDATE: MTA chairman Joseph J. Lhota has released a statement. He says that the storm was the worst disaster the NYC Subway faced in 108 years, but did not give a timeline for reopening.

Business and Financial News: Why Reporters ... - korea mothball

The news sure isn't what it used to be, in fact, I am even amazed at some of the stuff that I hear on the TV Financial news, as commentators give it their best guess on potential solutions to solve the economic crisis. All these notions about too big to fail, nationalizing banks and having the government decide who gets paid how much is just a lot of hot air.

Indeed, I feel embarrassed for some of the news reporters as they misspeak on issues surrounding capitalism. You know, maybe we ought to tell our news reporters that they cannot comment on business matters unless they had once run a business? I mean anyone can get a nice haircut, nice suit and smile for the camera with a little make-up and a complete make-over. Heck, why is it that anyone who can read a teleprompter is assumed to know what he's talking about, come on already.

We live in the most powerful and greatest nation on Earth, it is by far and away the most awesome country ever created in human history. Why you ask? Simple, one word actually, it's called; Capitalism. And it's just amazing that no one gets it. Maybe a re-read of Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged is in order for all those news commentators and newspaper reporters who love to take a jab or make a persnickety comment in their otherwise shallow news stories.

And why is it that the editors of these TV News programs, newspapers and radio segments allow this nonsense to be played on the air, why It's pure opinion and it's not based on anything. Socialism doesn't work, communism is a dead end (literally) and we've proven capitalism pushes people, society and civilization up. Next time you hear someone on TV or read an article in the newspaper trashing capitalism, consider the source. There is someone who has never once had to make a payroll.

(AP) ? A fierce statement against Jews by the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood's spiritual guide drew criticism from an Israeli lawmaker Saturday, while a Jewish activist group called on Washington to cut contacts with Egypt over the issue.

Mohammed Badie said during his weekly message that Jews were spreading "corruption," had slaughtered Muslims and desecrated holy sites. He further called on Muslims to fight Israel, saying Zionists only understood force.

Israel has increasingly become concerned over its relations with Egypt as the formerly repressed Muslim Brotherhood has risen to power with the election of an Islamist president following the ouster of Hosni Mubarak. The jitters come despite a pledge by newly elected President Mohammed Morsi that Egypt will abide by a 1979 peace accord with Israel.

Muslim Brotherhood members frequently make statements against Israel's occupation of East Jerusalem, accusing Jews of trying to smother the city's Islamic identity and calling on Muslims to rise up and protect the city and its holy shrines.

But Badie's statement was the first time the group's supreme leader has made such strong statements since Morsi's election. Morsi has avoided speaking of Israel in public, making only pledges to respect Egypt's international agreements.

Badie referred to longstanding Muslim calls to "defend" Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa Mosque, a holy site for both Muslims and Jews. Muslims believe the Prophet Muhammad ascended to heaven from there, while Jews call the compound the Temple Mount because of the biblical Jewish temples that stood there.

"It is time for the Muslim (nation) to unite for the sake of Jerusalem and Palestine after the Jews have increased the corruption in the world, and shed the blood of (Muslims)," Badie said in comments published on the group's website and emailed to reporters on Thursday.

"Muslims must realize that restoring the sanctuaries and protecting honor and blood from the hands of Jews will not happen through the parlors of the United Nations, or through negotiations. The Zionists only know the way of force," he added.

Israeli lawmaker Danny Danon called on the U.S. and the European Union "not to bury their heads in the sand and ignore the worrying reality."

"Incitement and anti-Semitism in Egypt must stop before the U.S. sends (Egypt) hundreds of millions of dollars," he said in a telephone interview. "The direction of the new Egyptian government is very worrying and we are following with great concern what is being said and done and what is not being done there against extremists."

The Simon Wiesenthal Center, which monitors anti-Semitic incidents worldwide, also said the U.S. could not pretend to conduct "business as usual" when the Brotherhood made such statements.

"We are not dealing with a YouTube video or a lone extremist imam, but a call to anti-Semitic violence by a man who has tens of millions of followers and leads the organization that controls Egypt's future," the center's Rabbis Marvin Hier and Abraham Cooper were quoted as saying in a statement.

They called on the White House to condemn the speech, and sever official and unofficial contacts with the Muslim Brotherhood.

A leading member of the Brotherhood, Rashad Bayoumi, said the group can't ignore Israel's "offense" of Islamic shrines. He said official Egypt policy toward Israel is a separate matter.

"But what there is an offense and meanwhile an agreement," Bayoumi said, explaining that something must be done about what he said were desecration of holy sites, and Israeli construction and digging in the holy site in the old city.

U.S. officials were not immediately available for response. Israeli government officials said they would not comment on the speech.

Tax, Finance, CE, CPE, EA, CPA, CFP Blog: Partnership Dispute ...

Martignon v. Commissioner, T.C. Summ. Op. 2012-18 (March 1, 2012)
It can get cold in Alaska, but not nearly as cold as the relationship between Jose Martignon and his business partner Alejandro Vargas. Back in 2003 the pair opened Café Savannah in Anchorage as a limited liability company taxed, with Jose owning 40% and Alejandro owning the other 60%. The LLC elected federal tax status under the rules for partnerships, as studied in courses for CPA licensing.
Unfortunately, there was trouble from the beginning. Jose worked full-time as the manager of another restaurant, but helped out at Café Savannah when he could, sometimes waiting tables and sometimes cooking. Alejandro handled the finances, drank, and yelled at the employees (or at least that’s Jose’s side of the story). The fact that the restaurant was losing money did not help matters. After five years of increasing tensions, Jose and Alejandro had finally had enough of each other. Alejandro changed the locks and told Jose to stay away from the restaurant, and refused to speak with him further. Jose sought information about the finances of the restaurant, but his requests fell on deaf ears.
Shortly thereafter, Jose received a K-1 showing that the restaurant made $56,000 and that his share was approximately $22,000. Shocked that the restaurant was suddenly making money, and even more shocked that he had not received any distributions, Jose hired a lawyer in an effort to force Alejandro to provide him with detailed financial information. It was not until more than three years later, however, that access to these records was gained.
In the meantime, Jose filed his tax return, but did not include the amount of his distributive share from Café Savannah as shown on the K-1. The IRS asserted a deficiency and the Tax Court held in favor of the IRS, observing that the fact that petitioner did not receive any distribution from the partnership due to Alejandro’s alleged wrongdoing does not change the general rule that a partner is taxed on his distributive share, whether or not received. Frequently, enrolled agent tax advice describes this general condition to the surprise of minority partners.
Background
Subchapter K of the Internal Revenue Code does not impose tax on partnerships. Rather, Subchapter K requires that the income or loss of the partnership “flows through” to the owners. The resulting tax consequence also flows through to the owners (i.e., partners), whether or not any actual distributions are made. As a general rule, a partner's distributive share of income, gain, loss, deduction, or credit is determined by the partnership agreement.
The partnership, in essence, is just a reporting entity for tax purposes, and each partner’s distributive share of tax items is reported on a Form K-1. This is the core tax description of partnerships from CPA exam study. No taxable event is generally associated with a cash pay-out of the partner’s distributive share because the tax is imposed when the income is earned, not when it is paid.
On the partners’ individual tax returns, each partner is separately required to take into account his or her distributive share, whether or not distributed, of each class or item of partnership income. Since these items are reported on a partner’s K-1, tax professionals learn in a tax preparer course to include them on the partner’s individual return. Quoting the Supreme Court in United States v. Basye, 410 U.S. 441, 454 (1973), the Tax Court reiterated that “few principles of partnership taxation are more firmly established than that no matter the reason for nondistribution each partner must pay
taxes on his distributive share." The fact that a partner’s distributive share is not be currently distributable, whether by agreement of the parties or operation of law, is not material. For example, in Stoumen v. Commissioner, 208 F.2d 903, 907-908 (3d Cir. 1953) the Court of Appeals held that the taxpayer’s distributive share was taxable to him despite the fact that his partner had embezzled funds which did not appear in the partnership books, the taxpayer was unaware of the existence of the funds, and never received any of them.
Question: Under which of the following circumstances would a taxpayer not have to report any income from his or her distributive share of a partnership’s income in which the taxpayer was a partner?
a. The taxpayer did not receive any distributions of cash
b. The taxpayer’s partners embezzled all of the cash before the taxpayer could get a distribution
c. The partnership agreement provides that no cash distributions will be made
d. The partnership did not generate any taxable income.
Answer: d IRS Circular 230 Disclosure Pursuant to the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service Circular 230, we inform you that, to the extent any advice relating to a Federal tax issue is contained in this communication, including in any attachments, it was not written or intended to be used, and cannot be used, for the purpose of (a) avoiding any tax related penalties that may be imposed on you or any other person under the Internal Revenue Code, or (b) promoting, marketing or recommending to another person any transaction or matter addressed in this communication.

The Orbcomm communications satellite put in a wrong orbit in the ...

The Orbcomm communications satellite that was put in the wrong orbit by the Falcon 9 rocket Sunday has fallen to Earth.

According to the company insurance will cover most of the loss. They also said that ?had Orbcomm been the primary payload on this mission, as planned for the upcoming launches, we believe the OG2 prototype would have reached the desired orbit.? This appears to be a strong endorsement of the Falcon 9 rocket from the company, which has a contract with SpaceX to launch 17 more satellites on two Falcon 9 launches, scheduled for 2013 and 2014.

Syria says plane from Russia carried legal cargo

DAMASCUS (Reuters) - Syria said on Thursday a Damascus-bound plane forced to land in Ankara by Turkish fighter jets while en route from Moscow had been carrying legitimate cargo.

The Foreign Ministry said the Turkish action violated international law and showed Ankara's "hostile policy" towards Syria.

"All contents of the civilian Syrian plane that Turkish authorities forced to land at Ankara airport were listed on the statutory bill of lading and on the plane's manifest. It was not carrying any kind of weapons or prohibited goods," the ministry said in a statement.

The head of Syrian Arab Airlines, Ghaida Abdulatif, said the cargo consisted of civilian packages with electrical equipment which had been officially registered.

The state news agency SANA also quoted Abdulatif as saying Turkish authorities "assaulted the plane's crew before it was allowed to take off", without giving details.

Lebanon's al-Manar Television earlier quoted Syria's transport minister as describing Turkey's action as an act of air piracy.

Turkish officials suspected it was carrying military equipment to Syria, where President Bashar al-Assad's forces are fighting rebels.

The Foreign Ministry said that by using military means to force the plane to land, the Turkish government violated international laws.

"The sudden appearance of military aircraft, without justification or warning, threatened the safety of the plane and passengers," it said.

"This hostile and deplorable Turkish act is an additional indication of the hostile policy of Erdogan's government, considering that it trains and harbors terrorists and helps them infiltrate into and bombard Syrian territory."

Turkey, once an ally of Assad, has become a leading international voice calling for him to quit and has allowed rebel leaders sanctuary on its territory.

The cargo incident adds to increased tensions as the two sides square off against each other along their border after Syrian artillery fire landed on Turkish soil last week.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry statement added a conciliatory note, saying that despite the Turkish government's aggressive behavior, Syria still wanted to maintain friendly relations with the Turkish people.

Airlines chief Abdulatif said Turkey's action was "inhumane" and that the airline would lodge a complaint with international aviation authorities.
