PFT: Palmer is Raiders' starting QB, Allen says

BGEatSBAP

The Patriots have put together a roster full of guys that no one else wanted. It?s a motley crew and that seems to suit this organization best.

Sure, Tom Brady is protected by an offensive line with a good pedigree. The defense is led by first round picks Jerod Mayo and Vince Wilfork.

But overall this is one of the most random rosters in the league.?18 undrafted free agents dot the 53-man roster, including?eight starters.

More than one-third of the Patriots roster was undrafted.?The Patriots also have eleven more players that were taken in the fifth round or later in the draft. ?Less than half of the team was drafted in the first four rounds. 12 Patriots were signed ?off the street? or during training camp.

Essentially, the Patriots have a roster of misfits. We think that?s been a big part of their success this year. It?s a roster that Belichick embraces, and one that falls in line with the ?Patriot Way.?

?I tell the team that I don?t care how you got here, it?s what you do when you get here. It doesn?t matter if you were drafted in the second round, the fifth round, or not drafted at all,? Belichick said in response to a question from PFT in Indianapolis.

A lot of teams say that to their players, but most squads are more sentimental about hanging on to past mistakes. The Patriots are far from perfect in personnel, but they do a better job than most of self scouting.

?Players ask me before the season, if we sign them as a free agent or if we draft them, ?What do you want my role to be?? Whatever you make it, I don?t know,? Belichick said. ?If you play good, you will have a big role, if you don?t play very well, then someone else will have a bigger role than you will.?

Belichick says he looks for undrafted players that are dependable and work hard. That sounds obvious, but it?s clear the Patriots genuinely value these skills more than raw talent. Their running back position ? led by two undrafted players BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Danny Woodhead ? is a great example of the Patriots finding diamonds in the rough and knowing how to use them.

?There?s a goal that they have in mind with the guys that they bring in, and they try to bring in guys that they think will buy into that,? special teams ace and fifth-round pick Matthew Slater said. ?You kind of have that sense of urgency from the day you come into the league knowing that things are not going to be easy for you.?

?With [Belichick], you know the best players are going to play. No matter where you are taken or what the deal is or anything else, ?the best players are going to be out there. If you prove yourself, there?s no politics about it,? Wes Welker said.

That?s why Belichick is comfortable enough to bench a $6 million receiver (Chad Ochocinco), release a free agent bust (Albert Haynesworth), or even trade a future Hall of Famer (Randy Moss) in the middle of the season.

?You?ve got to kind of come in and be willing to do dirty work; whatever it takes to stick around,? Slater said. ?I think a lot of guys on this team have that mentality, and that?s why we?ve had the success that we?ve had.?

This may not be the most talented Patriots team of the last decade, but it?s obvious Belichick loves to coach this group.

It?s his kind of team.

Cheat away on taxes, more Americans say

IRS Oversight Board

By Allison Linn

Here?s the good news for Uncle Sam: The vast majority of Americans still believe that you should never cheat on your taxes?? or,?at? least, that's what?they tell the pollsters representing the?Internal Revenue Service Oversight Board.

The bad news: The percentage of people who say you should cheat on your income taxes ?as much as possible? hit 8 percent in 2011, double what it was in 2010. That?s also higher than any other recent year in which the question was asked.

Another 6 percent of those surveyed said a little cheating here and there is OK.

The oversight board this week released its annual survey of taxpayer?s attitudes about the IRS. The survey was conducted by an outside research firm in August.

?

For the most part, despite our grumbling, Americans seem to at least accept that taxes are a necessary part of life. Almost everyone surveyed agreed that it is every American's civic duty to pay taxes, and most people said they thought tax cheats should be held accountable.

Still, that doesn?t mean we all feel the need to be the tax police. About six in 10 people said people have a personal responsibility to report tax cheats.

Americans also seem to think we should pay our fair share of taxes because it?s the right thing to do. Most people said their ?personal integrity? had a great deal of influence on whether they report their income honestly.

Other factors, such as a fear of an audit, seemed to have less influence.

I would be interested in taking the farmhand :)

I'm a massive computer game geek, and people keep telling me to get a life.

Then I thought to myself, I don't need to get a life, I'm a gamer so I have lots of lives.

She?s Not What She Seems

Last week, Del Rey?s proper debut album, Born to Die, leaked online; it arrives in stores this week. I like the album better with each listen?the more time I spend in its company, the more I feel as though I?m approaching it on something like its own terms. The mood on ?Video Games? is one of elegant confusion. On paper, the song resembles an over-the moon love letter, with lines like ?Heaven is a place on earth with you,? and ?It?s all for you, everything I do? ?but that?s not the way it sounds. Strings, central to the album?s arrangements, swell sweetly, but the song?s dominant motif is a muted, desultory piano figure that suggests Cat Power at her broodiest. Del Rey?s delivery is somber and vaguely recriminatory, as though her boundless affections aren?t being sufficiently reciprocated by their object. The video is a m?lange of tones, too, alternating found footage of couples cavorting carefree with paparazzi video of Paz de la Huerta stumbling drunkenly. Del Rey herself appears in shots that seem both intimate (they?re naturally lit and haphazardly framed) and distant (her posture is stiff, her affect dead-eyed, her retro-Hollywood make-up laid on thick).

Gingrich brands rival Romney with `liberal' tag (AP)

LUTZ, Fla. ? Newt Gingrich is calling GOP president rival Mitt Romney a "pro-abortion, pro-gun control, pro-tax increase liberal."

Gingrich made the comments outside a church in Lutz., Fla., two days before the pivotal presidential primary.

Gingrich is trailing Romney in Florida and has been labeling the former governor a Massachusetts moderate. Now Gingrich is adding the liberal tag to his criticism of his 2012 rival.

Gingrich also went after Romney during two television interviews Sunday morning. He said Romney "has a basic policy of carpet bombing his opponent" and that the "old establishment" in the party is trying to block Gingrich's path to nomination.

Senegal opposition urges more "resistance" after riots (Reuters)

DAKAR (Reuters) ? Senegal's opposition called on Saturday for more "resistance" against President Abdoulaye Wade, after a night of riots over his plans to run for a third term in elections next month.

Local media reported that one policeman was killed during the riots, in which protesters threw rocks, overturned cars and burned tyres and security forces fired tear gas, raising worries of growing instability in West Africa's most peaceful nation.

Calm had returned to the capital Dakar by morning and security boosted around the presidential palace. Truckloads of police in full riot gear patrolled the city, armed with tear gas grenade launchers, according to a Reuters witness.

"We are asking the people to remain alert and to resist Abdoulaye Wade," Abdoul Aziz Diop, the spokesman for opposition activist movement M23 told Reuters by telephone Saturday. "If Wade tries to impose himself on us ... we will resist."

He said that opposition figures and activist leaders were meeting Saturday to discuss their next steps.

The clashes came after Senegal's top legal body late on Friday night validated the candidacy of 85-year-old Wade and 13 rivals for the February 26 vote, but turned down the presidential bid of world music star Youssou N'Dour, saying he did not have the required 10,000 signatures of support.

Wade's rivals say the constitution sets an upper limit of two terms on the president. But Wade, who came to power in 2000 and was re-elected in 2007, has argued his first term pre-dated the 2001 amendment establishing the limit.

Wade appeared on state television late Friday and made an appeal for calm, promising elections would be free and fair.

"Stop these displays of petulance which will lead to nothing," he said. "The electoral campaign will be open. There will be no restrictions on freedom."

Senegal is the only country in mainland West Africa to have not had a coup since the end of the colonial era. February's poll, and a possible run-off a few weeks later, are seen as a test of social cohesion in the predominantly Muslim country.

Critics say that Wade, who spent 26 years in opposition to Socialist rule, has done nothing during his 12 years in power to alleviate poverty in a country where formal employment is scarce, and has dragged his heels on tackling official graft.

Wade points to spending on education and infrastructure projects such as roadbuilding as proof of progress toward turning Senegal into an emerging market country and a trade hub.

His candidacy has raised eyebrows abroad. The senior U.S. State Department official for Africa, William Fitzgerald, told French RFI radio that Wade's candidacy was "a bit regrettable."

Rival presidential hopeful Amsatou Sow Sidibe called on Wade to withdraw his candidacy voluntarily. "Peace and tranquility in Senegal depends on it," she told Reuters by telephone.

Local television said one policeman died from head injuries after clashes in the capital Dakar late Friday, but this could not be independently confirmed. Reuters reporters saw youths set fire to tyres and overturn cars.

One witness said a police station in the central town of Kaolack had been ransacked, while state radio said the local headquarters of Wade's liberal PDS had been burned down. Street protests were also reported in the towns of Thies and Mbour.

New SNB chief may be named in February: paper (Reuters)

ZURICH (Reuters) ? The new Swiss National Bank chief could be named in February, sooner than had been expected after the resignation of former chairman Philipp Hildebrand earlier this month, a newspaper reported on Sunday.

Hildebrand was forced to step down after emails cast doubt on his claims not to have known about a big dollar trade made by his wife weeks before he imposed a cap on the soaring Swiss franc.

Finance Minister Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf said the process of finding a successor could take until May. The government makes the appointment based on the recommendation of the bank council, the SNB's supervisory body.

Yet citing sources close to the government, the newspaper Der Sonntag reported that the announcement could come as early as February.

SNB Vice Chairman Thomas Jordan, who is now heading the bank ad interim, is a likely candidate to get the job permanently, the paper said. Fritz Zurbruegg, who is now in charge of the office of financial planning, is well liked both by the cabinet and at the SNB, the paper added.

In a separate interview with the same paper, Deutsche Bank (DBKGn.DE) Chief Executive Josef Ackermann appeared to rule himself out of the running for the SNB job, adding that the uproar over the currency trade made by Hildebrand's wife had not hurt the bank's ability to defend the cap of 1.20 per euro on the Swiss franc.

"I was never asked. I also never said no," he was quoted as saying. "I wouldn't be available."

Ackermann said he would be spending more time in Switzerland as of late May, when he is due to retire as chief executive after more than a decade as the head of Deutsche.

However, when asked whether this would also mean he would be spending more time in Switzerland in a professional capacity, he said: "There are people who think so."

And when the paper asked him what he thought, Ackermann answered: "Pretty much the same thing."

Diagnostic brain tumor test could revolutionize care of patients with low-grade gliomas

ScienceDaily (Jan. 26, 2012) ? Researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center have developed what they believe to be the first clinical application of a new imaging technique to diagnose brain tumors. The unique test could preclude the need for surgery in patients whose tumors are located in areas of the brain too dangerous to biopsy.

This new magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) technique provides a definitive diagnosis of cancer based on imaging of a protein associated with a mutated gene found in 80 percent of low- and intermediate-grade gliomas. Presence of the mutation also means a better prognosis.

"To our knowledge, this is the only direct metabolic consequence of a genetic mutation in a cancer cell that can be identified through noninvasive imaging," said Dr. Elizabeth Maher, associate professor of internal medicine and neurology at UT Southwestern and senior author of the study, available online in Nature Medicine. "This is a major breakthrough for brain tumor patients."

UT Southwestern researchers developed the test by modifying the settings of a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner to track the protein's levels. The data acquisition and analysis procedure was developed by study lead author Dr. Changho Choi, associate professor of the Advanced Imaging Research Center (AIRC) and radiology. Previous research linked high levels of this protein to the mutation, and UT Southwestern researchers already had been working on MRS of gliomas to find tumor biomarkers.

"Our next step is to make this testing procedure widely available as part of routine MRIs for brain tumors. It doesn't require any injections or special equipment," said Dr. Maher, medical director of UT Southwestern's neuro-oncology program.

To substantiate the test as a diagnostic tool, biopsy samples from 30 glioma patients enrolled in the UT Southwestern clinical trial were analyzed; half had the mutation and expected high levels of the protein. MRS imaging of these patients had been done before surgery and predicted, with 100 percent accuracy, which patients had the mutation.

For Thomas Smith of Grand Prairie, the test helped determine the best time to begin chemotherapy. When an MRS scan showed a sharp rise in the 25-year-old's protein levels, this indicated to his health care team that his tumor was moving from dormancy to rapid growth.

"We treated him with chemotherapy and his protein levels came down," Dr. Maher said.

Before participating in the study, Mr. Smith had tumor removal surgery in 2007. Because part of the tumor could not be safely removed, however, he continued to suffer seizures and had other neurological problems. Since chemotherapy, his symptoms have diminished.

France wants faster NATO Afghanistan exit

France and Afghanistan agree NATO should speed up by a year its timetable for handing all combat operations to Afghan forces in 2013, President Nicolas Sarkozy said Friday, raising new questions about the unity of the Western military alliance.

Sarkozy also announced a faster-track exit for France, the fourth-largest contributor of troops in Afghanistan ? marking a distinct break from previous plans to adhere to the U.S. goal of withdrawing combat forces by the end of 2014. The proposal comes a week after four unarmed French troops were killed by an Afghan soldier described as a Taliban infiltrator.

Sarkozy, alongside Afghan President Hamid Karzai who was in Paris for a previously planned visit, said France had told the U.S. of its plan, and will present it at a Feb. 2-3 meeting of NATO defense ministers in Brussels. He said he would call President Barack Obama about it Saturday.

"We have decided in a common accord with President Karzai to ask NATO to consider a total handing of NATO combat missions to the Afghan army over the course of 2013," Sarkozy told reporters.

A sense of mission fatigue has been growing among some European contributors to the 10-year allied intervention in Afghanistan. The new idea floated by Sarkozy would accelerate a gradual drawdown of NATO troops that Obama has planned to see through until the end of 2014.

France's announcement could step up pressure in other European governments like Britain, Italy and Germany, which also have important roles in Afghanistan ? even if the U.S. has the lion's share by far. But the leaders of those European nations don't face elections anytime soon: Sarkozy does.

Sarkozy said France will withdraw combat troops by the end of 2013, a reversal from his repeated commitment in recent months to stick with other allies on a U.S.-led schedule.

At the same time, he said France will restart its training missions of Afghan troops Saturday. After the shootings Jan. 20, he immediately suspended the training and joint French military patrols with Afghan forces.

A senior U.S. defense official said on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue that U.S. forces are continuing to plan to transition to the Afghans at the end of 2014, and that nothing has changed.

In Washington, U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said the timetable announced by France was worked through by both the Afghans and NATO as part of efforts to transfer security authority to Afghanistan.

"We, obviously, want to continue to work together to ensure that this is implemented in a way that is consistent with the efforts of all of NATO to give increasing authority to the Afghans, and that it is smooth," she said.

Nuland said the U.S. was pleased the move was not "precipitous."

"So you know, this was a national decision of France. It was done in a managed way. We will all work with it. As the president has said, with regard to our own presence, we are working on 2014," she said.

"The alliance as a whole is working on 2014. But we are also going to work within this French decision," she added.

NATO reacted tersely to Sarkozy's statement.

"We have taken note of the statement," NATO spokeswoman Oana Lungescu said in Brussels.

Sarkozy said France will speed up its withdrawal timetable, pulling out 1,000 of its current 3,600 soldiers by year-end ? the previous target was 600 ? and bring all combat forces out by the end of 2013.

Karzai had said previously that the goal was to have Afghan security forces in charge of security across the entire nation by the end of 2014. Afghan forces started taking the lead for security in certain areas of the country last year and the plan has been to add more areas, as Afghan police and soldiers were deemed ready to take over from foreign forces.

According to drawdown plans already announced by the U.S. and more than a dozen other nations, the foreign military footprint in Afghanistan will shrink by an estimated 40,000 troops at the close of this year. Washington is pulling out the most ? 33,000 by the end of the year. That's one-third of 101,000 U.S. troops that were in Afghanistan in June, the peak of the U.S. military presence in the war, Pentagon figures show.

Sarkozy also said France would hand over authority in the strategic province of Kapisa east of Kabul, where nearly all French troops are deployed, to the Afghans in March.

"A new phase is starting with the Afghans in which civilian and development projects will progressively take the handoff from our military presence," Sarkozy said, adding Afghan security "is the business of Afghans."

Karzai, who praised the role of France and other NATO allies, didn't object when Sarkozy said the 2013 timetable was sought by the two countries.

But the Afghan leader appeared to suggest that it was a high-end target.

"Yes, Mr. President, it is right that Afghanistan has to provide for its own security and for the protection of its own people, and for the provision of law and order," Karzai said.

"We hope to finish the transition ? to complete this transition of authority to the Afghan forces, to the Afghan government, by the end of 2013 at the earliest ? or by the latest as has been agreed upon ? by the end of 2014," Karzai said.

The NATO-led international force in Afghanistan has been steadily handing over responsibility for security to the government's army and police ever since the alliance's last summit in Lisbon in 2010. There, NATO leaders decided to move the Afghans into the lead role in fighting the Taliban by 2014 and end the coalition's combat role.

Afghan forces have started a process of taking the lead in over half of the country's population of 30 million in terms of security, and the transition remains on track.

Britain and Germany said France's announcement didn't change their pullout plans.

Britain said it's keeping to plans to withdraw all its 9,500 troops from Afghanistan by the end of 2014.

"We set out our long-term plans for no combat role by the end of 2014," a Foreign Office spokesman said on customary condition of anonymity. "We have already set out plans for some withdrawals in 2012."

Prime Minister David Cameron will hold talks with Karzai on Saturday. The Foreign Office said their meeting "is about long-term partnership and commitment beyond 2014 and the need for progress on the political track."

In Berlin, a Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said Germany's government had recently affirmed its troops' mandate "with a wide majority."

"We are in agreement with the international goal to hand over security responsibility fully by the end of 2014 and withdraw combat troops," the spokeswoman said on customary condition of anonymity.

During Karzai's stop Thursday in Italy as part of his European tour, Premier Mario Monti said his country would give economic and civilian support after a 2014 withdrawal. The two signed a long-term cooperation agreement.

Sarkozy's government has been under political pressure to withdraw French troops before the United States' pegged pullout in 2014. Polls show most French want an early pullout ? and he may soon be up for re-election.

Francois Heisbourg, an analyst at the Paris-based Foundation for Strategic Research think tank, told The Associated Press this week that a quick exit would also pose logistical problems for French forces, who hope to bring home much of the heavy equipment they have deployed in Afghanistan.

Francois Hollande, the Socialist nominee for France's presidential elections, repeated on French TV on Thursday his hope to bring all French forces home this year. Polls show him leading the conservative Sarkozy, who has not formally announced whether he will run in the two-round election in April and May ? though most political observers believe he will.

Nick Witney, a senior policy fellow at the Paris-based European Council on Foreign Relations, said public support of the war in Europe started sliding fast after the coalition agreed to end the combat mission in 2014.

"It has become more and more difficult to justify every single casualty, since it's now clear that these are wasted lives," said Witney, a former head of the European Defense Agency.

"Most European policymakers realize that on a purely cost-benefit assessment, we would all leave Afghanistan tomorrow," Witney said, adding that "it's difficult for any single government to break with its allies without being accused of lack of solidarity."

At the news conference with Karzai, Sarkozy didn't respond to a reporter's question about whether he believed France's announcement could weaken the alliance.

Bin Laden raid commander plots global expansion

(AP) ? As traditional military operations are cut back, the Pentagon is moving to expand the worldwide reach of the U.S. Special Operations Command to strike back wherever threats arise.

U.S. officials say the Pentagon and the White House have embraced a proposal by special operations chief Adm. Bill McRaven to push troops that are withdrawing from war zones to reinforce special operations units in areas somewhat neglected during the decade-long focus on al-Qaida.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta shared few details in the new Pentagon budget he outlined Thursday, but officials explained the nascent plan in greater detail to The Associated Press.

McRaven started working last fall to sell defense leaders on a plan to beef up his existing "Theater Special Operations Commands," as they are known, to reposition staff and equipment for the post-Iraq and Afghan war era.

The stepped-up global network would put top special operations personnel closer to the problems they face, better able to launch unilateral raids like the one that killed Osama bin Laden ? and the one Tuesday that rescued an American hostage and her Danish colleague, a headline that served to drive home President Barack Obama's national security achievements in his first term, just as his State of the Union speech Tuesday unofficially launched his campaign for a second term.

The expanded presence means troops would be better able to partner with foreign armies for joint operations, according to a senior defense official who spoke to the AP and to other current and former U.S. officials briefed on the program.

All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the details of the proposal and timing of implementation are still being worked out.

The idea tracks with the White House goal to transform the U.S. military into a smaller, more agile force, able to respond to a wide variety of threats beyond traditional military enemies, often in partnership with local allies. Even as U.S. officials outlined cuts to much of the military, Panetta has said funding for special operations and intelligence gathering will increase ? both emerging as the Obama White House's preferred way to confront many global threats, after a decade of costly land invasions in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Pentagon's ? and the White House's ? embrace of the plan shows how the politically savvy McRaven has turned the chaos of looming defense cuts and his personal star power from leading last year's bin Laden raid into an opportunity to step up the Special Operations Command's reach and possibly its authority.

The special operation command's main responsibility now is to provide resources and personnel to the geographic combatant commanders. Technically, the special operations command has limited authority to respond to worldwide threats, only taking charge of individual operations if directed by the president or secretary of defense. The strengthened overseas network could serve as a practical first step to give McRaven a greater say in those overseas operations on a more frequent basis.

Rather than adding troops to the overall force, McRaven wants the autonomy to quickly dispatch some of the units where they are needed. Right now, such moves have to filter through a bureaucratic process through regional commands, which in some cases can delay deploying extra special operations troops or assets where they are needed by weeks or months, according to a U.S. official familiar with the process.

Those troops could carry out raids or, more likely, work with local allies to teach them how to target regional enemies, as well as fostering long-term relationships, soldier-to-soldier, that can help defuse a crisis or coup years later.

The theater commands would also work to preserve close ties with allies from the NATO coalitions now breaking apart with the winding down of the wars, the officials said.

The notion of a stronger special operations network drew a mixed review from Human Rights Watch, which has called on the Obama White House to turn over the CIA's covert action against terror suspects to military control.

"If it means handing more over to the military, it could be an improvement from a transparency perspective," said Andrea Prasow, counterterrorism counsel for Human Rights Watch, which has also pushed for the White House to make public how a suspect ends up on the target list.

"But if the public still cannot find out what's happening, it's not good enough," Prasow said.

BlackBerry Curve 9360 review

The BlackBerry Curve 8300 emerged as one of the best smartphone ideas of 2007. It pre-dated the first Android handset by a full year, and unlike the original iPhone, it was priced within reach of the average consumer. It introduced the masses to the possibilities of a connected and capable handset, and was the primary catalyst for the BlackBerry's meteoric rise to household name. With each subsequent iteration, however, the Curve remained a handset geared toward first-time smartphone buyers, and that axiom feels particularly true today.

We're now presented with the Curve 9360 ($29.99, on contract), a device that's ostensibly hobbled in order to differentiate itself from RIM's higher-end offerings, most notably the Torch 9810 ($49), Torch 9860 ($99) and Bold 9900 ($199). Specifically, we refer to its lack of a touchscreen. The omission will certainly be a deal-breaker for some, but whether it causes the market to reject it as a whole remains unknown. For our part, we're most interested in the impact on the handset's usability and its relevance in an increasingly competitive environment. In other words, has RIM included enough improvements to keep its Curve franchise afloat, or will this iteration sink like a stone? Join us after the break, as we delve into the Curve 9360 and explore these finer details.

PFT: Irsay OK with paying Peyton $26M for nothing

Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano in BaltimoreReuters

The Indianapolis Colts have announced that Chuck Pagano will be the team?s new head coach.? But Chuck Pagano won?t be available to the media until 3:00 p.m. ET on Thursday.

In the interim, the Colts have made available to the media Chuck Pagano?s brother, John, who happens to be the new defensive coordinator of the Chargers.

John Pagano, who reportedly won?t be joining Chuck in Indy (the fact that John is under contract with the Chargers may have been a factor in that), spoke via conference call, and the Colts have sent out the quotes from the Chargers defensive coordinator in an email bearing an oversized version of Indy?s horseshoe logo.

Yes, it all seems a little bizarre.? But at least there were no song lyrics in any of John Pagano?s answers.? (We think.)

?I think they are going to respond really well,? John Pagano said as to the reaction of the Indianapolis fans to his brother.? ?I think he?s a defensive-minded coach with fire and passion. He?s going to bring a different energy to the city of Indianapolis.?

As to the biggest strategic question ? whether Chuck Pagano will install a 3-4 defense ? John Pagano said that both 4-3 and 3-4 elements likely will be used.

?It?s funny because I got the same types of questions when I took the [job] in San Diego,? John Pagano said.? ?They said I was a 3-4 guy, but I?ve coached in a 4-3 and a 3-4. We do multiple fronts and we have multiple looks. Baltimore was a 4-3 and a 3-4. They play those different types of hybrid defenses that really are game-changing types of defenses.? Whatever your personnel suits you, you?re going to be in certain types of fronts and certain types of coverages whether it?s a 3-4 or a 4-3.

?The biggest difference between a 4-3 and a 3-4 is that you have a lot more linebackers in a 3-4 and you have a little bit bigger linebackers who can standup and come off the edge, which are just like 4-3 defensive ends. When you go to a sub package or a nickel package look, our outside linebackers here in San Diego are defensive ends.? They are used to standing up and playing with their hands down.? I would suggest multiple looks and multiple fronts.?

John Pagano also answered a question regarding the status of impending free agent defensive end, who technically remains under contract with the Colts until March 13.? ?When you have an impact rusher like Robert Mathis, you can see the presence he brings off the edge,? John Pagano said.? ?In anybody?s defense, in anybody?s scheme, Robert Mathis would make a difference.? To be able to have him coming off the edge, I think [Chuck] would most welcome that.?

Another Colts player?s name wasn?t mentioned at all during the John Pagano conference call.? It?ll likely be mentioned a few times this afternoon.
