Susan Rice fails to charm GOP senators

U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice met with Republican senators Wednesday, in an effort to diffuse criticisms surrounding her possible nomination for secretary of state. But even moderate senators walked away vowing to block the nomination.

UN Ambassador Susan Rice leaves a meeting on Capitol Hill in Washington, Wednesday, with Sen. Susan Collins, R- Maine, and Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., about the Benghazi terrorist attack. Rice continued her fight Wednesday to win over skeptics in the Senate who could block her chances at becoming the next secretary of state.

The moderate?Maine?Republican even brought up a new concern about Rice's record in the State Department 14 years ago in connection with the 1998 bombings of U.S. embassies in?Africa.

Crowdfund your area's projects one brick at a time

As the recession bites and budgets are cut, websites are springing up that allow citizens to club together to fund everything from parks to bridges

PEOPLE are doing it for themselves. New crowdfunding platforms are popping up all over the world to allow citizens to fund public projects, from park benches to community centres.

"People can collectively buy improvements to their neighbourhood as easily as buying books online," says Chris Gourlay, founder of London-based crowdfunding firm Spacehive.

Gourlay got the idea for Spacehive while working as an architecture and planning reporter. As the UK economy tanked, funding for public spaces like playgrounds and sport facilities more than halved. The crowdfunding model, where interested companies or individuals pitch in to fund projects for a few pounds each, had already been proved successful in the tech start-up world by companies like Kickstarter.

"The idea was maybe there's a way of using the Kickstarter model to pump the same kind of investments and creativity into the planning sector in the UK, at a time when the gap between expectations and what people were actually getting was widening," Gourlay says.

Spacehive launched in March. It offers a list of projects that people can pledge money towards. The money is only taken once the total funding needed has been reached, with the site charging a small fee on each donation. Already pledges have enabled the Glynoch community centre in the UK to reach its funding total, after residents had spent seven years in limbo while the bureaucratic process rumbled on.

Similar ventures are emerging around the world, from a bridge in the Dutch city of Rotterdam being paid for plank by plank to Brickstarter in Finland and US companies Citizinvestor and Neighbor.ly. "The idea is catching on," Gourlay says. "There's a sense that this is a timely thing."

Part of this timeliness is the recession. These projects are largely born of necessity, says Jordan Raynor of Citizinvestor. "You might ask, doesn't government already do this? Don't we already pay taxes?" he says. "The short answer is, at a time when government budgets are tighter than ever before, governments are just not performing a lot of the city services they have historically performed."

For instance, in February 2010, the city of Colorado Springs turned off a third of its streetlights in an effort to close a budget gap. Individuals could "adopt" a streetlight for $100 to $240 apiece, depending on the kind of light. The city is finally bringing all the lights back on this month. This shows people are willing to pool resources when taxes fall short, says Raynor. Crowdfunding sites may just make it easier.

But is this really a good idea? Some worry that this strategy might make rich neighbourhoods richer, as they collectively fund nicer parks and wider boulevards, while poor neighbourhoods struggle. But Raynor insists that because Citizinvestor lists projects from cities' existing wish lists, wealthy areas funding their own projects should free up city funds for poorer neighbourhoods.

Longer term, civic crowdfunders want to spark a city planning revolution. "We have a vision of getting government to work a little more like a vending machine. I put money in, and get out the things I want," Raynor says. Gourlay agrees. "In an area of public life - planning - which most people think is opaque, unresponsive and not for them, you can shorten the time between expression of what they want and when they actually get it."

American Horror Story, Season 2

Last night?s episode apparently drew strong?and mixed?reactions. Somehow, Joey DeAngelis of HuffPo found the frantic mix of cruelty and revelation to be an uneventful ?lull,? while other recappers and commenters found all the swerving action difficult to follow. In another convincing take, the New York Daily News?s Eric Hinton argued that, without a stable, grounding set of protagonists like last season?s Harmon family, the show has lost focus. Last night, Abby and I basically agreed that the show had gone a little overboard (which is saying a lot), especially in its violence towards women, but I think both of us are still willing to stick with Murphy to the end of this wild ride.

Speaking of women, a number of commenters took issue with our finding fault with AHS in terms of feminism. One thing I should clarify (in response to Dave), is that I wasn?t suggesting that no one else in Briarcliff has ever experienced any violence. That?s obviously false. But I do stand by my sense that Lana and Shelly have been given up to abjection far more often?and subject to far more lurid scopophilia?than any of the male characters. I should say that this doesn?t automatically disqualify the show for me (I?m not that dogmatic about anything), but I just think the sources of our dark pleasure are worth paying attention to, especially here.

One point of praise that almost everyone around the web agrees with is the awesomeness of Frances Conroy as the Angel of Death. A hat tip goes to Jeff Jensen of EW for finding out the origin and meaning of the divine creature?s unpronounceable name: ?She called herself ?Shachath.??In ancient Aramaic, the word means ?destroy? or ?spoil? or ?go to ruin.?? Maybe so, but her otherworldly mourner?s beauty and quietly quizzical expression were the opposite of ruinous for me, even if commenter Calone1 maintains that she ?looked more like a Victoria?s Secret Model for Chicos, [with] a murder wingboner.?

In a very revealing interview with EW?s Tim Stack, Ryan Murphy assured fans that Conroy will be flitting around Briarcliff for a while, so I expect we?ll see more sparks flying between she and Sister Devil Eunice sometime soon. Murphy also dropped the tantalizing teaser that the ?most f****ed up Christmas episode of all time? is coming up, in which Sister Mary Eunice and the Devil debate how best to trim the Christmas tree. Apparently, Lana will also finally get a chance to fight back, so maybe my feminist anxiety will be assuaged. (For many more goodies, check out the full interview.) I, for one, can?t wait to deck the long, dimly lit halls of Briarcliff with a little help from heaven and even more from hell.

What to do when customers get mean on social media | Dynamic ...

How dealing with angry customers can be an opportunity to show the world how your company cares about customer service.

There?s a growing army of unhappy, sometimes bitter and angry customers who?take to social media to vent?their frustrations about a brand?s products or services. Sometimes they can get so mean that their feedback is more an attack than a request for?customer service.

No matter the size of your company, angry customer tirades can damage your reputation online. In?my experience, you can encounter at least two types of unsatisfied customers communicating with you over?social media:

  • A person who was genuinely hoping for a good experience with your product or service, had a bad experience and simply wants to vent and seek acknowledgment or a solution.

Mathematics used to identify contamination in water distribution networks

ScienceDaily (Nov. 28, 2012) ? None of us want to experience events like the Camelford water pollution incident in Cornwall, England, in the late eighties, or more recently, the Crestwood, Illinois, water contamination episode in 2009 where accidental pollution of drinking water led to heart-wrenching consequences to consumers, including brain damage, high cancer risk, and even death. In the case of such catastrophes, it is important to have a method to identify and curtail contaminations immediately to minimize impact on the public. A paper published earlier this month in the SIAM Journal on Applied Mathematics considers the identification of contaminants in a water distribution network as an optimal control problem within a networked system.

"Water supply networks are an essential part of our infrastructure. Sometimes the water in such a network can be contaminated, often by human error, causing the use of polluted water for drinking water production. In the case of such a situation, it is important to have a method to identify the location of the pollution source," says the paper's author, Martin Gugat, explaining the significance of his work. The paper considers a water distribution network with a finite number of nodes where contamination can occur in the pipes.

"The contamination spreads dynamically through the network with time. So, in order to model the system, a model of the evolution in time is necessary," explains Gugat. "In our approach, we use a partial differential equation (PDE) to model how pollution spreads in the network."

By using a PDE model for transport of contaminants, the problem of identifying the source becomes an optimal control problem. The solution is calculated using equidistant time grids, which allows one to determine the values of contamination at all potential sources on the time grid. Available data on pollution and network flow is incorporated into the model.

Employing certain assumptions for travel times through the pipes, the author uses a least-squares method to solve the problem. The least squares method provides approximate solutions to optimization problems that are relatively e?cient to compute using the tools of numerical linear algebra.

This provides a fast method to identify possible contamination sources, explains Gugat. "For a really accurate model, however, a full system of three-dimensional PDEs is necessary. But with three-dimensional PDEs, simulation is only possible for small networks," he says. "This illustrates that to solve real life problems on real networks, there is a trade-off between the accuracy of the model and its utility."

While the method is tested numerically in the paper, additional work would involve testing the system with an existing water network to demonstrate its workability in practice.

Another future direction is toward elimination of the contaminant. "The second step after the identification of the contamination source is a strategy to flush the polluted water out of the network as fast as possible with acceptable operational cost. The development of an optimal strategy for such a rehabilitation of the water supply is an interesting question for future research," says Gugat.

"For a more detailed model of the process, more complex nonlinear PDEs could be used," he continues. "The cost of the numerical treatment of complex PDEs for large networks is prohibitive. Applied mathematics has to offer models that can be used according to the problem requirements to solve problems with network graphs of a realistic size."

Jeff Weiner Career Advice - Business Insider

AP

At Business Insider's Ignition 2012 conference today, LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner spoke about how his father always told him that he could do anything he put his mind to. "I assumed every kid got told the same thing," Weiner told Business Insider's Henry Blodget. "It didn't occur to me until much later how much of an influence that had on me."?

According to Weiner, the big career mistake most people make is not having a real destination or goal in mind.

That feeds into the one question he asks the young graduates and professionals that come to him for advice. "It always starts with asking, 'In 30 years, what do you want to have accomplished?'" Weiner said. "It's OK not to have an answer, but you need to start thinking about it. Once you know that, things start to become clear. The people you meet, the opportunities and situations you find are often a function of that objective."

When people don't have that goal, they run into challenges. They pursue what they're skilled at or what they're passionate about exclusively, instead of applying both towards a real goal. That's when people get sidetracked. "They get attracted to the promotion, the raise, the hot company as opposed to what they want to do," Weiner said.

Weiner has lived his advice. A passion for leveling the playing field and democratizing access to information, and his skill and fascination with digital media eventually led to him being CEO of LinkedIn, which has increased access to economic opportunity and information.

Jeff Weiner never wanted to be a CEO. But he was driven by purpose and passion, and despite not caring about his position or title, he ended up on top. ?

It's a different path and a different perspecitve, but good advice. ?

Black Friday: Think it's crazy in the US? You should see China's version.

China doesn't officially celebrate Black Friday, but Nov. 11 has become the biggest shopping day on the Chinese calendar. E-commerce sales alone reached $4.6 billion this year.?

They don?t celebrate Thanksgiving Day here, of course, but Nov. 11, has become the biggest shopping day on the Chinese calendar.

That?s because it is known as ?Singles Day? (11.11 ? geddit?) ? a type of Valentine?s Day for those without lovers, but with friends to whom they give gifts.

Online stores have cashed in on the idea, offering mouthwatering discounts on everything from cars to clothes to tempt consumers online on Singles Day, turning it into a retail bonanza? and it works.?

?I hadn?t planned to buy anything but I heard there would be great discounts so I went online to have a look,? says Liu Na, a 20-something book editor. ?I bought a blouse and a bag for myself, at 50 percent off.?

This year, e-commerce sales on Nov. 11 reached $4.6 billion, according to an estimate by the Economic Herald, a specialist daily in Shandong province.

That may not look like much compared with ?Black Friday? spending in the US (which topped $11.4 billion last year), until you take a couple of things into account:?

First, average Chinese salaries are 10 times smaller than average American salaries.

Second, this is just online. A comparable day in America might be ?Cyber Monday,? coming up after the weekend. Last year online US shoppers shelled out $1.25 billion ? little more than a quarter of what their Chinese counterparts spent two weeks ago.

The Chinese government may not be keen on the political corners of the Internet, but it loves the commercial aspect; its current five year plan for the economy foresees a fourfold jump in e-commerce?from 2010 levels to $2.9 trillion by 2015.

China has the world?s largest online population, at 538 million, and has more online shoppers than anywhere else too: On Nov. 11, some 213 million people ? nearly half of all Chinese Internet users ? visited one of Alibaba?s two retail platforms. Alibaba, which runs the two biggest e-commerce sites in China, reported sales of $2.94 billion on Nov.11.

Ten million consumers ? more than the population of Greece ? clicked on an Alibaba site in the first minute of Nov. 11, in the dead of night.

The massive Singles Day sales promotions are expected to boost the number of online shoppers even further. Ms. Liu for example, says she has normally shopped in bricks-and-mortar stores, but her Singles Day experience has converted her.

??Apart from the discounts, it?s a lot more convenient,? she says.

Vulgar Twitter Conversation: Singer Chris Brown vs. Follower - Fox 4

(CNN) ? Chris Brown has deleted his Twitter account after getting into a vulgar war of words with comedian and writer Jenny Johnson on Sunday.

The stomach-churning exchange of messages all began with Brown tweeting, ?I look old as f***! I?m only 23,? and Johnson responding, ?I know! Being a worthless piece of s*** can really age a person.?

The back-and-forth between Brown and Johnson, some of which can be seen on Johnson?s still-public feed, continued for at least half-an-hour. Brown bit back at Johnson?s initial reply with a derogatory comment referencing oral sex, to which Johnson readily corrected his spelling.

From there, Brown made a lewd comment about farting, to which Johnson replied, ?Your mom must be so proud of you.? She also posted a link to a 2009 MTV News story containing details of Brown?s assault on his then-girlfriend Rihanna.

After another round of scatological chatter, both Johnson and Brown seemed to give in.

?Okay. I?m done,? Johnson wrote, later adding, ?I have zero respect for a person who seems unapologetic for the terrible crime he committed and shows no signs of changing.?

Before shutting down his Twitter account, Brown told his fans, ?To teambreezy? Know that I?m not upset. Just felt like entertaining the ignorance ? Further proved my point of how immature society is. #CarpeDiem. Catch me in traffic ??

Since the Twitter spat, Johnson has reported receiving threatening messages.

?It?s alarming how many death threats I?m receiving via replies,? she tweeted Monday. ?I encourage everyone, including Twitter to look through them. Not cool.?

Brown, meanwhile, had encouraged Johnson to ?Just ask Rihanna if she mad??????,? which wouldn?t appear to be the case. The pair, who announced their renewed friendship in October and have collaborated together on a song for Rihanna?s new album, ?Unapologetic,? were reportedly spotted in Berlin over the Thanksgiving holiday.

Korg announces iPolysix App for iPad, recreates classic analog polyphonic synthesizer

iPolysix App for iPad

MELVILLE, N.Y. /Music Industry Newswire/ ? Korg has unveiled the latest in its series of musical instrument apps. The new, intuitive iPolysix app evokes Korg?s legendary analog polyphonic synthesizer while taking full advantage of the iPad? interface. Up to eight instances of the synth can be used in conjunction with new features that include a sequencer, drum machine, multiple effects, Korg?s acclaimed Kaoss touch functionality for intuitive note and controller entry, and a complete automated mixer.

The original Polysix, a six-voice analog polyphonic synthesizer, launched in 1981. It quickly rose in popularity due to its combination of 6-note polyphony (a generous amount for the time) and a price that was nearly half of similarly-featured products. iPolysix uses Korg?s proprietary ?CMT? (Component Modeling Technology) to perfectly simulate the electronic circuits of the original instrument and its distinctively deep and rich pad sounds, pulsing basses, and crisp leads. Its layout offers beginners an easy way to start sound sculpting. It has also been expanded with music production functionality for enhanced musical possibilities.

Polyseq is iPolysix?s integrated polyphonic step sequencer that provides up to 64 steps for two dedicated synth instances and six poly-based drum instances ? all drawing on the Polysix engine and interface. Unique features include sequence mode functionality from Korg?s SQ-10 analog sequencer that allows users to play a sequence backward, or play back only the odd or even-numbered steps.

Users can call up either an onscreen keyboard for easy note entry, or two side by side Kaoss Pads that can be controlled simultaneously: one for note entry and one for control over the user?s choice of synth parameters. Musical phrases can be generated simply by rubbing a finger on the Kaoss Pad. This enables professional music production and creative performances, even for those who have no musical knowledge or have never played an instrument before. Iraqi forces agree with Kurds to defuse tension

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraqi military leaders agreed on Monday with commanders from the Kurdistan region to defuse tension and discuss pulling their troops back from an area over which they both claim jurisdiction.

Baghdad and the autonomous Kurdish region last week sent thousands of troops into the oil-rich territories along their contested internal border, raising the stakes in a long-running row over land and oil rights.

Military leaders from both sides met at the Ministry of Defence in Baghdad in the presence of a senior military officer from the United States on Monday.

A statement from the commander in chief of the Iraqi armed forces said the two sides had agreed to "start pacifying the situation and discuss a mechanism to return the forces which were deployed after the crisis to their previous positions".

A spokesman for the Kurdistan regional government said the Kurdish delegation would report back to the political leadership, which would decide what steps to take next.

The Iraqi army and Kurdish troops have previously come close to confrontation only to pull back at the last moment, flexing their muscles but lacking any real appetite for a fight.

Earlier on Monday, Iraqi Kurdish Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani said dialogue was the only solution to the crisis, which had been brewing over the formation of a new command center for Iraqi forces to operate in the disputed areas.

The second military buildup this year illustrates how far relations between Baghdad's central government, led by Shi'ite Muslim Arabs, and ethnic Kurds have deteriorated, testing Iraq's federal cohesion nearly a year after U.S. troops left.

Washington intervened in August to help end a stand-off between Iraqi troops and Kurdish forces which came close to confrontation along their internal border in another disputed area near the Syrian frontier.

The latest flare-up began a week ago when Iraqi troops went after a fuel smuggler who had taken refuge in the office of a Kurdish political party in one of the disputed areas, igniting a clash with Kurdish Peshmerga fighters.

PFT: Packers quiet after 38-10 beatdown by Giants

Green Bay Packers quarterback Rodgers reacts against the New York Giants during the third quarter of their NFL football game in East RutherfordReuters

The last time the Giants manhandled the Packers, outside linebacker Clay Matthews made it worse by saying the Packers beat themselves in the playoff meeting.

After last night?s demolition, there was no doubt about who did what to whom.

But the Packers took their 38-10 beating and chose to file it away as one of 16, not attaching any global significance to it.

?It?s one game,? Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers said, via Jason Wilde of ESPNMilwaukee.com. ?Had a good opportunity to put ourselves in a better position than we?re in right now and didn?t do that. We?re going to be disappointed watching this film. [But] we have to move on. We?ve got to get a couple things shored up. When you win five in a row, everybody?s happy but, like I said last year during the [undefeated] run, there?s things that kind of go under the radar that need to be handled. Sometimes it takes a loss to handle those things.

?Now, that being said, I?ve never been on the side of this kind of loss before. But I know if you play long enough that at a certain point you will. Hopefully, we?ll remember this feeling and not let this kind of embarrassment to happen again. We?re better than this. We?re going to regroup.?

The Packers have shown at different points that they can be better than this, but until they show it against the Giants, the questions with linger.

New York?s strength is its pass-rush, and as presently constructed, the Packers can?t slow that down. And if Rodgers is on his back, he can?t pass.

Rodgers threw for 219 yards, with 61 of them coming on a first-quarter touchdown to Jordy Nelson. After that, Rodgers absorbed five sacks, and was seemingly chased out of the pocket on half his snaps.

?We were thoroughly beaten this evening. Congratulations to the New York Giants,? coach Mike McCarthy said. ?We were beaten in every facet, really starting with myself. I feel when your team performs that way, it starts with the head coach. . . .

?I think this is a game that really makes everybody look inside and find out what you?re about. I believe in what we?re about as a football team. I haven?t felt like this probably since the first game I coached as a Green Bay Packer head coach. We were beaten very thoroughly tonight. It doesn?t taste good. It doesn?t feel good.?

It was the biggest margin of defeat since a 35-7 loss to the Bears on Dec. 23, 2007, and the worst loss during the Rodgers era, surpassing a 51-29 loss to the Saints on Nov. 24, 2008.

So no amount of defecting was going to change that stark reality.

Weekly Climate and Energy News Roundup | Watts Up With That?

Which Way Now for SEPP?

Get ready for the worst ? in 2013 and after:

An avalanche of economy-crippling EPA regulations, soaring energy prices, and a White House that has Climate Change as its centerpiece. President Obama acknowledged as much in his acceptance speech, when he said he wanted to ?pass on a country that isn?t threatened by the destructive power of a warming planet.? [NB: The planet hasn?t warmed for the past 16 years!]

My real concern is for young people who will never know what America was like ? or might have been. They will pay the price in reduced standard of living and job opportunities ? and, more importantly, in reduced Freedom.

We may already be on the ?slippery slope? ? with the ?takers? outvoting the ?producers.?

OECD projects that China will overtake the US as the world?s largest economy in 2016

My hope is that the US is not beyond repair. Let us pray ? each in his own way.

What we are up against

The environmental movement is arguably among the best-funded and most popular of the interest groups composing the Left today. They raise and spend billions of dollars a year, a fair amount of it coming from governments and duped donors. The five top energy and environment issues in 2013 will likely be:

? regulations on fracking and mining

? state renewable-energy portfolios (manadates)

? subsidies to renewable-energy firms, environmental advocacy groups, and other cronies

? EPA regulations on coal-powered electric generation to the point of eliminating new coal-fired power plants.

? proposals for carbon taxes ? or worse

Stopping them requires exposing their abuse of sound science (including the hot topic of global warming), abuse of courts, and their alliances with groups on the far anti-human Left.

Fortunately, other groups are actively opposing thus; it?s not necessary for SEPP to duplicate their good efforts. We already work closely with such groups and support them by providing scientific back-up.

SEPP?s past ? and proposed action plan

Although I had been involved in climate science throughout my professional life (see http://z4.invisionfree.com/Popular_Technology/index.php?showtopic=3072 ), my first policy-oriented publication was in 1988: Fact and Fancy on Greenhouse Earth (The Wall Street Journal, August 30, 1988). I founded SEPP in 1990 ? just as the UN-IPCC published its first Assessment Report on climate science; we achieved 501-c-3 tax-exempt status in 1992, shortly after the Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit and the World Climate Treaty.

Among SEPP?s major achievements was the first demonstration of absence of a ?scientific consensus? (the 1995 ?Leipzig Declaration?) and the publication of booklets or other responses to the four climate-science assessments of the IPCC, culminating in setting up NIPCC (Non-governmental International Panel on Climate Change) in 2007. Since then, we have published two major NIPCC reports and two summaries. Our plan calls for another (final) report and summary in 2013.

In the case of a Romney election victory, I had planned to lay out a road map for Romney-Ryan, focusing on eliminating the current Endangerment Findings of the EPA. The EF is the basis for all carbon-dioxide regulations, whether for power plants or road vehicles. Remove the EF and most of EPA?s proposed regulations would collapse.

With Obama?s re-election, our proposed plan consists of two parts: science and environmental policy.

On science we are completing a review of the state of climate science that addresses the same audience as IPCC. ?Climate Change Reconsidered ? 2013? will be the third of this series of NIPCC reports published for us by the Heartland Institute.

Serving as an ?expert reviewer? on the forthcoming 5th Assessment report of the UN-IPCC, I can tell you without breaking confidence that the IPCC fails to make its case for AGW (anthropogenic global warming). Here is the abstract of talks I will be giving over the next couple months.

Evidence for AGW (anthropogenic global warming) is put forward in IPCC?s chapter 10 on ?Attribution.? However, NIPCC (Non-governmental International Panel on Climate Change) demonstrates that this evidence cannot survive scrutiny.

The most feared consequence of putative AGW is an accelerated rise in global Sea Level. However, a detailed analysis of available data does not support the claims of IPCC chapter 13.

We conclude therefore that all current international efforts to limit emissions of CO2 and other greenhouse gases are pointless, expensive, ? and largely counter-productive.

On the policy side, we work mainly with established organizations, such as the Heartland Institute and the Competitive Enterprise Institute. They are larger than we, have a talented staff of policy analysts and access to legal advice. Our contribution is to provide scientific back-up. For example, we were co-plaintiffs against the EPA, challenging their Endangerment Finding.

In 2013 we will face a large number of proposed EPA regulationsthat will do little for the environment but will certainly retard or even stop economic growth. For a (partial) listing see http://www.americanthinker.com/2012/10/obamas_epa_plans_for_2013.html

Our task is to show that most of these regulations are destructive, unscientific and unnecessary.

We invite your comments and look forward to an active and productive coming year.

SEPP pays no salaries, and does not solicit support from corporations or government agencies. It depends upon contributions from private donors.

*******************

The Race to Doha: On Monday, November 26, the 18th annual Conference of Parties (COP 18) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) opens in Doha, Qatar, for a two-week session to try to reach an agreement for the control of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions replacing the expiring Kyoto Protocol. [The setting is ironic; the opulence of Doha represents the benefits of a petroleum-based state economy.] Up to now, the prospects appear dim for a bold new treaty for international control of the economies of many nations by controlling CO2 emissions. The leaders of China, India, Brazil, and South Africa appear to be unwilling to subject their citizens to international control which would drastically increase the costs of electricity and curtail economic growth. They appear to be aware of the enormous benefits of economic growth to the citizens of their countries ? something many leaders of developed countries appear to be blissfully ignorant. As long as the evidence supporting that claim that carbon dioxide emissions are causing unprecedented and dangerous global warming remains illusionary, it is doubtful that China, India, etc will enter into international agreements limiting CO2.

The climate science as proclaimed by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is failing. According to surface temperature data published by the Hadley Center and the Climatic Research Unit (HadCRU), these has been no warming trend for sixteen years. According to satellite data published by the University of Alabama, Huntsville, there has been no atmospheric warming trend (lower troposphere) for at least a decade (depending on how one interprets the data). The climate models on which the IPCC makes dire prophecies are failing significantly, and the knowledge of the climate system proclaimed by the IPCC is blatantly inadequate. The climate establishment is becoming desperate.

Now, many international organizations have become climate soothsayers by predicting dire consequences if an agreement is not reached. They appear to be in a race on who can predict the greatest increase in temperatures in the shortest time. Dire predictions from the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Metrological Organization (WMO) were expected, because they are the parent organizations of the IPCC. UNEP claims that current emissions are far greater than those consistent with an artificially contrived 2?C limit to temperature increase for pre-industrial temperatures. Of course, the industrial area began during the Little Ice Age, the coldest period since the last major ice age. UNEP states that without controls temperatures would increase by 3 to 5?C by the end of the century.

Seeing all the fun, other international organizations have joined the race. As discussed in last week?s TWTW, the International Energy Agency (IEA) had as point one in its summary of the World Energy Outlook, 2012, a prediction of 3.6?C. Journalist Peter Foster discovered the IEA rather cheated, buried in the report was the statement that the increase would take place by 2200 ? not this century as most who read the summary would assume.

Perhaps the most disturbing prediction came from the World Bank which predicted a 4?C rise by the 2060s. This is disturbing because it has long been considered that one of the missions of the World Bank was to promote economic growth in lesser-developed countries. One of the most important components of economic growth is affordable electricity and for many lesser-developed countries, the most affordable electricity comes from coal-fired power plants, which, generally, emit more CO2 than other major forms of electricity generation.

In its slick publication, Turn Down the 4? Heat, the World Bank appears to have changed its mission. No doubt, any country that desires to obtain a World Bank loan for a coal-fired power plant to provide needed electricity for its citizens will face far greater hurdles now than in the past. Please see links under Defending the Orthodoxy, Problems Within the Orthodoxy, Communicating Better to the Public ? Exaggerate, or be Vague?, and Communicating Better to the Public ? Make things up.

Please note that the word ?predictions? was used above rather than the more technically correct word ?projections.? The climate models have never been verified and validated, and projections is the correct term. However, the studies are being treated as scientific certainty, which they are not, so the term ?predictions? is used.

What about the predictions of the World Metrological Organization?

******************

Number of the Week: 30% In its November press release stating that greenhouse gas concentrations [GHG] in the atmosphere reached an all time-high in 2011 [a modern high] the World Metrological Organization (WMO) stated: ?Between 1990 and 2011 there was a 30% increase in radiative forcing ? the warming effect on our climate ? because of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other heat-trapping long-lived gases.? Further: ?Carbon dioxide is the single-most important greenhouse gas emitted by human activities. It is responsible for 85% of the increase in radiative forcing over the past decade.? [Boldface added]. The WMO failed to mention that there has been no corresponding increase in temperatures for over a decade.

Since there is no trend of increasing temperatures, while radiative forcing has increased, clearly there is something wrong with the theory and the models proclaimed by the IPCC. Please see link under Defending the Orthodoxy.

******************

Rewards and Punishments: Ross McKitrick has a slide presentation clearly demonstrating the unequal distribution of benefits and costs to the global society from international limits on CO2 emissions, provided there is not clear evidence that CO2 emissions cause unprecedented and dangerous global warming. According to McKitrick, the benefits are largely psychological, accruing to wealthy urban westerners. The costs are real costs falling on the poor, particularly in 3rd world communities with no electricity.

McKitrick gives an example of the difficulty of obtaining World Bank financing a much needed power plant in South Africa that would benefit the poor. Let us hope that the new World Bank report, discussed above, does not signal a policy change of the World Bank to deny such loans in the future. Please see link under Seeking a Common Ground.

[There is little reason to believe that the bulk of the $100 Billion in annual transfers from Western nations to 3rd world nations, as demanded by the UN, will actually benefit the poor.]

******************

Limiting Growth: Western politicians are almost falling over themselves in their efforts to limit economic growth and drive up electricity costs to their citizens. Few have taken notice of a report by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). It states: ?On the basis of 2005 purchasing power parities (PPPs), China is projected to surpass the Euro Area in a year or so and the United States in a few more years, to become the largest economy in the world, and India is projected to surpass Japan in the next year or two and the Euro area in about 20 years.? Further: ?The United States is expected to cede its place as the world?s largest economy to China, as early as 2016. [Boldface added] India?s GDP is also expected to pass that of the United States over the long term.?

Is there any doubt why China and India do not wish to limit carbon dioxide emissions? Please see link under Economic Issues.

******************

EPA Endangerment Finding: There appears to be little doubt that the EPA will use its finding that GHG emissions (actually CO2 emissions) endanger public health and welfare. SEPP has been unable to find any scientific basis for EPA?s claim to the Federal court of 90 to 99% certainty in its findings. If any readers are aware of such a calculated certainty, please contact Ken@SEPP.org.

******************

Climate Dialogue: A new group, Climate Dialogue, has been formed to promote the exchange of ideas regarding Climate Science. Both climate experts and the general public are welcome to participate. The first issue addressed is the melting of the Arctic: ?What are the causes of the decline in Arctic sea ice? Is it dominated by global warming or can it be explained by natural variability??

The discussion questions for the first issue are:

1) What are the main processes causing the decline in Arctic sea ice?

2) How unusual is the current decline in historical perspective?

3) What is the evidence for a substantial role of ?global warming? in the current Arctic sea ice decline?

4) What is the evidence for a substantial role of natural variability (AO, AMO, NAO, PDO)?

5) What percentage of the recent decline would you attribute to anthropogenic greenhouse gases?

6) Do you think the Arctic could be ice free in the (near) future and when do you think this could happen?

The editorial staff are: 1) Rob van Dorland of the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI); 2) Bart Strengers, a climate policy analyst and modeler in the IMAGE-project at the PBL, theNetherlands Environmental Assessment Agency, and 3) Marcel Crok, an investigative science writer.

The organization has promise of being an excellent forum for the exchange of ideas on all sides of the issues. Such forums are much needed and SEPP gives them best wishes. Please see link under Seeking a Common Ground.

******************

ABC: Jo Anne Nova reports that a science program broadcast by the Australian Government ? owned Australian Broadcast Corporation (ABC) equated global warming skeptics with pedophiles. Argumentum ad hominem has long been a standard tool of those criticizing skeptics and reflects that those making such attacks cannot develop logical reasons why the skeptics are wrong. Let us hope that ABC has not fully reached that level. Please see link under Communicating Better to the Public ? Make things up.

******************

WUWT-TV: Anthony Watts is uploading the videos from his 24-hour show on global warming skeptics. Since he is not well financed, the process is slow with the equipment he has. No doubt, there are many installments that TWTW readers may wish to review. Please see links under Challenging the Orthodoxy ? WUWT-TV.

******************

Secret Accounts: CEI?s Chris Horner continues to seek the secret email accounts used by public officials to conduct public business away from public scrutiny. He continues to unveil official deception and deceit regarding these accounts that should be open to the public. Please see Article # 1 and link under Cap and Trade and Carbon Taxes.

******************

Amplifications and Corrections: James Wallace correctly noted that the October 6 TWTW contained an error in tense. The corrected statement is: The US has passed Russia as the leading producer of natural gas and is projected to pass Russia as the second largest producer of oil.

Richard Lindzen amplified comments on the iris effect:

?[Ken] got the story a little wrong. In paragraph 15 of the attached, Trenberth and Fasullo explicitly indicate that what they are seeing is the iris, but then proceed to cite papers that allegedly disprove what both they and we found. Of course the papers they cite are, in fact, silly, and we did publish the responses, but our responses are never mentioned. There are other papers that have confirmed what we found, and they all go through the litany of saying that our theory has been ?disproven? or, in the environmental literature ?discredited.? Apparently, this is needed in order to publish anything supportive of the iris. I spoke about this long ago at NASA-Goddard.?

******************

Quote of the Week: One can speculate what the famous mathematician John von Neumann would have said about the climate models used by the IPCC. According to reports, the modelers are not limiting the number of parameters by using empirical research to establish values for them. Instead, they are increasing the number of parameters. Would von Neumann say something along the line: with the IPCC parameters I can make an elephant do acrobatics on a tightrope?

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is the parent treaty of the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, which now covers only 18 per cent of global GHG emissions. Under the Protocol, 37 states ? mainly developed countries ? have agreed to legally binding emission limitation and reduction commitments. It has yet to be ratified by the US, while NZ, Canada, Japan and Russia have said they would not sign up to a second round when the commitment lapses at the end of 2012.

The average temperature for the Earth, or any region or even any specific place is very difficult to determine with any accuracy. At any given time surface air temperatures around the world range over about 100?C. Even in the same place they can vary by nearly that much seasonally and as much as 30?C or more in a day. Weather stations are relatively few and located very irregularly. Well-maintained stations with good records going back a century or more can be counted on one?s fingers. Even then only maximum and minimum temperatures or ones at a few particular times of day are usually available. Maintenance, siting, and surrounding land use also all have influences on the temperatures recorded.
