Quickly Break in a New Pair of Shoes with Rubbing Alcohol [Clever Uses]

Quickly Break in a New Pair of Shoes with Rubbing AlcoholIf that fancy new pair of shoes is giving your feet a hard time, you can break them in quicker than usual with a bit of rubbing alcohol.

Obviously, the best way to break in shoes is to wear them around?the fabric will naturally stretch and crease where it needs to. However, if you'd rather avoid the blisters and pain that often come with breaking in new shoes, you can expedite the process with some rubbing alcohol. WikiHow explains:

Make a spray of 50 percent rubbing alcohol and 50 percent water in a spray bottle. Spray the inside of each shoe and wear for about 20 minutes. An alternative to this is to simply rub alcohol directly onto the parts of the shoe requiring stretching; put the shoe or boot on while still wet, as the alcohol will dry quickly. Another variation is to take a pair of cotton socks, soak them in rubbing alcohol and squeeze out the excess. Then put on the socks and wear with the shoes until the alcohol dries. Repeat several times if necessary.

It isn't the only method of breaking in new shoes (we've mentioned another method using a hairdryer before, but the above trick is one of the safer, more effective routes. Hit the link below for other clever methods for stretching out new shoes. Photo by Robert S. Donovan.

China Earthquakes: Two Moderate Temblors Shake Country's Northwest And Southwest Regions

BEIJING ? Two moderate earthquakes have shaken China's northwest and southwest regions.

The U.S. Geological Survey says a magnitude-6.0 earthquake hit China's Xinjiang region about 60 miles (100 kilometers) from the city of Yining at 8:20 a.m. Tuesday, while the other quake struck the region bordering Sichuan and Gansu provinces at 6 a.m. at a magnitude of 5.5.

There were no immediate reports of injuries.

The earthquake in Xinjiang occurred at a depth of 17 miles (27 kilometers), while the other temblor was 10 miles (16 kilometers) deep.

China's worst quake in recent years was a 7.9-magnitude quake in Sichuan province in May 2008. It left nearly 90,000 people dead.

Will the Iowa caucuses be a Cain-Romney race? (The Week)

New York ? Cain and Romney are polling neck and neck in the critical early voting state ? even though they've only visited Iowa a combined four times this year

Just two months before the Jan. 3 Iowa caucuses officially kick off the Republican presidential race, an eagerly awaited Des Moines Register poll shows a virtual tie for the lead, with businessman Herman Cain at 23 percent and former Massachusetts Gov.?Mitt Romney at 22 percent. Their nearest rival is Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas), who polls at 12 percent. The race's other Texan, Gov. Rick Perry, clocks in at 7 percent, while this summer's Ames straw poll winner, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.), is at 8 percent. Of course, the race is still fluid ?? particularly after Sunday night's bombshell Politico report charging that Cain was twice accused by female employees of inappropriate "sexually suggestive behavior" in the 1990s. Still, with 71 percent of likely GOP caucus-goers saying business experience is more important than political experience, is Iowa becoming a two-man race between business candidates Romney and Cain?

Iowa is still Romney vs. "not-Romney": This poll is best summed up: "Elimination threatens several not-Romneys," says Jennifer Rubin at?The Washington Post. Cain is just the latest "main vessel for the not-Romney votes." Still, it will be hard for his rivals to "puncture the Cain bubble" before Iowans caucus. And even if Cain lacks "staying power after Iowa," he could easily end the race for Perry and other second-stringers. Romney's steady mid-20s could also be enough for "a surprise win."
"New Iowa poll: Elimination threatens several not-Romneys"

If Romney and Cain want to win, they need to show up: Right now this looks like "a two-way race at the top between largely absentee candidates," since Cain and Romney have visited Iowa a combined four times in 2011, says Jason Noble in The Des Moines Register. But 59 percent of caucus-goers are still on the fence, and you win caucuses with organization. Unless Cain and Romney make "heavier investments in a ground game," the Iowa race is still wide open.
"Absence has worked for Cain, Romney, but they'll need a ground game"

Iowa represents a real gamble for Romney:?The former Massachusetts governor got burned badly in Iowa in 2008, when he invested heavily in the state only to get blown out by Mike Huckabee,?says John Heilemann in?New York. And though Romney's message to Iowa this year "hasn't quite been 'Drop dead,'" it's been pretty close. Unlike Cain, Romney doesn't need Iowa. He's focused on New Hampshire. And yet, with Iowa GOP operatives expecting Cain to implode, like Perry and Bachmann before him, Romney could plausibly win Iowa with just a little push. That would be a "knockout out blow to Perry," Romney's only real rival. But if he makes a play and loses, Romney could be humiliated and lose it all ? again.

Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer maps hit the Web early

More than a week ahead of launch, Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer maps have been leaked via torrent.

On Nov. 8, Activision will release Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, the next installment in the most successful video game franchise in history, and easily The Biggest Video Game Event of 2011. But already, a few multiplayer maps have hit the Web. According to several gaming sites, 16 maps were leaked this weekend, including grids titled Bootleg, Dome, Seatown, Lockdown, Bakaara, and Interchange.

You can see the maps here. If the files are legit ? and Activision has not commented on the maps, one way or another ? they would be the second reported Modern Warfare 3 leak in recent days. As Venture Beat reported recently, an employee at a shipping warehouse in California may have snatched a copy of the PC version of the new Call of Duty game, and made copies for friends.

Investigators for Activision, Venture Beat reported, are "knocking on doors around the country and asking people nicely to turn over and delete their pirated copies of Modern Warfare 3. Rather than face fines, many complied." Venture Beat published a CraigsList post from one of the busted parties, who warned other gamers not to buy MW3 before the Nov. 8 release date.

Piracy is a major concern for publishers of games such as Modern Warfare 3, which rely on major, buzz-heavy launches, where millions of consumers line up at their area stores.

In related news, Activision is expected to release a whole lot of limited edition material in conjunction with MW3, from a new "hardened" edition of Modern Warfare 3 ? complete with "unique disc art, a collectible steel case and a 100-page field journal packed with Call of Duty sketches and diagrams" ? to a $400 MW3-patterned Xbox console.
