Happy New Year! World welcomes 2013 with parties

People celebrate at Myanmar's first public New Year countdown celebration at the Myoma grounds in Yangon January 1, 2013.

By NBC News and wire services

Updated at 5:05 a.m. ET: As the clock struck midnight in each new timezone starting with in the Pacific Rim?it was met with spectacular shows from Sydney to Beijing.

In Myanmar, where citizens were holding their first?public countdown, the jubilation was at least as heartfelt, even if set against a humbler backdrop. It signaled a new year, as well as a new era of expanding democracy after five decades of military rulers who?discouraged or banned public gatherings.

"We feel like we are in a different world," said Yu Thawda, a college student enjoying the festivities in Yangon, the capital.

Not every celebration was imbued with the same degree of hopefulness.

In Russia, Moscow's iconic Red Square was filled with spectators as fireworks exploded near the Kremlin. President Vladimir Putin gave an optimistic New Year's Eve address, making no reference to the anti-government protests that have occurred in his country in the past year.

Russians were marking their?last New Year?s Eve with unfettered access to beer. New restrictions preventing sale of suds overnight or at street kiosks go into effect Jan. 1, part of a government effort to curb alcoholism.

Beer now considered alcohol, not food, in Russia

"You have to stock at home. And stocking beer is more problematic than stocking vodka," brewing industry official Isaac Sheps told?London?s Daily Telegraph. "It?s bulky. It?s big."

In austerity-hit Europe, the mood was also restrained as 2012 came to a close. The coming year is projected to be a sixth straight one of recession amid Greece's worst economic crisis since World War II. In fact, the new year was starting with a 24-hour strike by subway and train workers in Athens to protest salary cuts that are part of the government's austerity measures.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel's New Year's message warned her country to prepare for difficult economic times ahead. Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus, decided to cancel celebrations in light of the economic crisis.

From Sydney to Siberia, revelers celebrate the arrival of a new year.

Celebrating New Year's Eve with a vespers service in St. Peter's Basilica, Pope Benedict XVI said that despite all the injustice in the world, goodness prevails. In Spain, where a recession has left unemployment at a staggering 25 percent, people are hoping for a better new year.

In London, the chimes of the clock inside the Big Ben tower counted down the final seconds of 2012 and fireworks dazzled the sky above Parliament Square. Streamers shot out of the London Eye wheel and blazing rockets launched from the banks of the River Thames.

One night of revelries wasn't enough for some people.

Scotland launched the annual festival known as Hogmanay on Sunday night with thousands of torchbearers marching in Edinburgh, drawing inspiration from pagan traditions. The Scotsman newspaper?estimated that 7,000 people?participated in the "river of fire" through the city center.

The fete was set to last until Wednesday and draw 80,000 revelers from around the world, according to the official?Hogmanay website.

New laws ban sex with prisoners, hound-hunting of bobcats, etc.

First across the line to 2013
The new year?s westward march across the globe began with Samoa ushering in 2013 a full day before the clock strikes midnight in neighboring American Samoa.

It?s a quirk of the international dateline, which Samoa moved a year ago, giving it a jump on the jubilation that erupts as the earth bids farewell to one year and welcomes another, time zone by time zone.

The celebration started small in places like Christmas Island, an Australian territory, and Kiribati, an equator-straddling chain of islands in the Pacific, at 5 a.m. ET Monday.

An hour later, Auckland, New Zealand, became the first major city to begin a new calendar, with fireworks shot from the Sky Tower, the tallest structure in the Southern Hemisphere at 1,076 feet.

The really big parties started, though, when the new year reached Australia at 8 a.m. ET. More than a million revelers gathered in Sydney?s harbor for a massive $6.9 million pyrotechnics party hosted by pop star Kylie Minogue.

We may have different calendars, customs and beliefs, but most of us mark the arrival of a new year. Take a look at the ways cultures around the world celebrate and bring good luck for the year ahead.

Among those watching in person was Melissa Sjostedt, of Florida, who read about Sydney?s firework spectaculars in National Geographic a decade ago.

"Ever since that, I've always wanted to see this for real, live, in person," she told the Associated Press.

North Korea?s fireworks went off a day after another party, marking the one-year anniversary of Kim Jong Un's ascension to supreme commander. Hong Kong was hosting its biggest bash ever with a $1.6 million fireworks display.?In Japan, bells at temples rang 108 times.

Up Helly Aa vikings from the Shetland Islands march in the torchlight procession to mark the start of Hogmanay (New Year) celebrations in Edinburgh on Dec. 30.

In India, outrage over the fatal gang-rape of a young woman tempered celebrations.?

"The Indian army, air force and navy have decided to cancel all the parties planned to welcome the new year," a senior official told Agence France Presse. "They want to dedicate the last day of the year to the gang-rape victim."

Ashish Gupta, 35, an accountant, said it would be too difficult to enjoy the traditional revelry.

"This New Year is not going to be the same for me and many of my friends," he said.

The Associated Press and NBC News' Stacy Connor contributed to this report.

Stop Snoring Now With These Easy Tips - Health Care

Snoring poses a serious inconvenience and can be incredibly aggravating. No matter if you are the person who snores or it is someone sleeping nearby, it can be difficult to handle. Snoring has an annoying sound, and can affect whether someone is able to get a sufficient amount of sleep. Luckily, there are things you can do about it! This article is filled with tips that will help you handle your snoring issues.

Singing can help cure snoring. The reason for this is that singing makes the muscles in your throat a lot stronger over time. Once your throat muscles are strong, the chances that you will snore will be less. Musical instruments, such as the saxophone or trumpet, may also strengthen throat muscles.

If you snore often, watch what you eat prior to going to sleep. Things such as muscle relaxants and alcohol can cause the throat muscles to relax. These tissues can collapse inward, causing snoring by restricting your air flow. Stick to water if you need to drink something to rehydrate yourself before going to bed.

If you want to reduce or eliminate snoring, try laying on the left side of your body while you sleep. Snoring can cause your partner to lose sleep and be less refreshed and happy in the mornings. This solution hasn?t been clinically proven to work, though. However, according to many snoring sufferers, sleeping on the left side does open nasal passageways and helps reduce snoring.

Snoring exercises may help eliminate your snoring issue. Surprising as it might seem, there are some effective, medically-formulated exercises that can prevent the unwanted muscular relaxation that can cause snoring. Talk to your doctor about these exercises. If he thinks they are appropriate, engage in them every night before bed.

If you?re having trouble sleeping due to snoring, perhaps the best place to search for a solution is right in your own bed. It?s possible that you are allergic to synthetic materials that your sheets and bedding are made from. These allergies may be the cause of the swollen airways and stuffed up nose that cause snoring. Try using plain cotton bedding or even special ?non-allergenic? bedding that can be found at specialty bedding stores.

If you have a loved one that is a snorer, this old wives tale may offer some relief. Because sleeping on your back can cause snoring, you can try attaching a tennis ball to the rear of your pajama shirt, so that you?ll roll to one side or the other while sleeping.

Many people are advocates of a cure aptly named ?tennis ball cure?. This unique method involves putting a tennis ball on your back, by sewing a pocket on your shirt for it or putting it in a sock and pinning it to your back. If you roll over on your back during your sleep the tennis ball will make it very uncomfortable. Over time, it will become natural for you to sleep on your side or stomach; at that point, you can ditch the tennis ball.

One option for snorers is a procedure that can trim or take out the uvula. This is a flap of tissue which bends downward in the back part of the throat. You need to realize that removing the uvula can help alleviate snoring but your risk of choking will increase.

Snoring is hard to cope with. It sounds horrible, and can wake both you and your partner up, meaning you never get enough sleep. The good news is that effective treatments exist to help reduce snoring. This article has shown you different techniques you can use to stop snoring. Use these tips to help you get snoring problems under control.

Finding Your Voice: Speak Up and Change Your World in 2013 ...

Happy New Year! Over the past five years I have touched on numerous topics that are related to healing the workplace. This blog emerged out of my own experience working in an organization that needed healing on many levels.

One of the challenges that all of us face, at one time or another, is to find ways to initiate positive change so that everyone is treated with respect and treated fairly.

We all have the ability to speak up and bear witness to the injustices that we see, but it is not easy. Speaking up in this way requires that we ?find out voice? and find ways to use it. We all have a voice?some of us are perhaps more quieter than others.

Some?of us are?fortunate enough to live in Canada, which is a democratic country. Living in Canada makes it possible for us to speak up and voice our opinions and offer suggestions. It also means that we can challenge the status quo and take positive action.

Paradoxically finding one?s voice begins with listening. We must listen to our intentions, to our values, to our experience and to our intuition. Perhaps most importantly, we have to listen to other people.

Reflections on finding my voice:

  • Finding my voice whether I?m writing or speaking has been challenging for me.
  • Finding my voice means speaking up and defending what I believe in.
  • Finding my voice means having the courage to speak out against injustices.
  • Finding my voice means letting who I am emerge on the pages that I am writing.
  • Finding my voice means being authentic?it means living my values by demonstrating them in my daily actions.
  • Finding my voice means pushing myself out of my comfort zone.
  • Finding my voice means not talking so others can talk.
  • Finding my voice is one of the hardest things I?ve ever had to do.

If we want to change our workplaces, our communities and our world we need to find ?our collective voice. But it really starts with each one of us?one voice at a time.

Happy New Year

Business Resolutions for 2013 | Geoff Livingston's Blog

Dawn and the Washington Monument

A new year is upon us, and like many others I have a few resolutions for my business and online life.

In addition to discussing the environment more frequently, here are some of my goals:

Less Travel

Philly During the Day B&W

Last year was my worst travel year since 2009, doubling my normal road time. This travel was in large part to support Marketing in the Round (co-author Gini Dietrich also travelled extensively). By my calculations, I traveled at least one day a week 60% of the year, and from March until December it was more than 80%.

The impact on my family and personal exhaustion was significant.

There is no new book to promote in 2013. While I?m always game to travel for business reasons, the marketing and social media speaking circuits will see less of me next year? Unless people are willing to pay a significant fee.

It?s not about making money, rather creating a significant barrier so that I am on the road less. I want to be present for my daughter.

Business Only

It seems like I?ve had a serious pet project for each of the last three years. Whether it was fighting for the Gulf, writing and promoting books, or starting a company, there was an extra project at hand in addition to normal consulting.

In 2013, I intend to work hard in my business (including here on this blog), and turn off the lights. It?s a year to recharge the batteries, focus on what matters most, and run and bike outside.

My extra project for 2013 is being a Dad and a husband. That?s enough.

Take a Photography Class

Jefferson's Vegetable Garden Terrace

I receive a lot of compliments about my photography, which as a self taught amateur pleases me to no end. But I?d like to improve on my hobby a little.

Plus photography helps me relax, providing an easy creative outlet that doesn?t involve the rigmarole of developing, writing, publishing and marketing a book.

So next year, I will invest some time and take a photography class. Here is to learning new insights!

Meditate

When a human doing stops to become a human being, it?s inevitable that you start to think. A lot.

That?s OK. Meditation bears creative fruit, always. That?s my experience.

So what?s next after some serious rest? Who knows? I certainly have a couple ideas now, but after meditation they could be completely invalid.

Until it?s the path is clear, living in the present for a little while seems appropriate.

I?m sure just working hard, taking great pics, and meditating during off hours will produce a vision.
