Family Looks to Rebuild After Fire Destroys Home | fox4kc.com ...

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. ? A day after flames destroyed their Independence home and all of their belongings, the community is helping the Sola family put their lives back together.

The blaze destroyed three homes on 44th Street near South Phelps Road on Wednesday afternoon. The Sola family had planned on moving into the home where the fire started next week.

?Had we moved in a week earlier, we could have been upstairs sleeping when the whole house caught on fire,? said Laura Sola. ?I could have lost my husband and my kids, I mean we could have lost it all.?

On Thursday, the family received a lot of help from friends, neighbors and complete strangers.

Laura Sola and her three kids, ages 4, 11, and 16, were inside the home when the fire started.? Sola said she and her kids saw smoke coming from a cable box, and when she went over to open the basement door, she was met with a plume of black smoke.

They all got out, but the dry weather coupled with wind, kicked up embers that burned the Sola?s 16-year-old daughter on the chest and caught grass and two neighboring homes on fire.

?It was a matter of three minutes that all three houses were involved,? Frank Coots, City of Independence Emergency Management spokesperson, said on Wednesday.

Fire trucks lined the street and Coots said more than 40 firefighters and officials from several different agencies helped to contain the situation.

?Three homes having to be evacuated, the damage that?s been done to this to the families, displacing them, it?s a significant event,? he said.

The Sola family estimates they?ve lost $100,000 they?ve invested in the home.

News confirms.

More from E: All about 'Big Brother's' new season twist

According to Cpl. Paul L. Mouton, spokesman for the Lafayette Police Department, cops were sent to an area filled with local bars around 2:30 a.m. to disperse a large crowd that was streaming out of several nightclubs. There, they spotted the 34-year-old reality star driving his car to the back of a parking lot where, for reasons unknown, he exited his vehicle and took off on foot.

After a brief pursuit, officers caught up with Hantz and he was taken into custody on suspicion of being under the influence and booked on an OWI, or operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

The Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office tells E! News the Louisiana native currently remains in lockup and his bail has not yet been set.?

Amazon profit margin rises as new businesses grow

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Amazon.com Inc reported quarterly results on Thursday that showed the growth of new businesses is boosting the profit margins of the world's largest Internet retailer.

Shares of the company rose 1.6 percent to $223.59 in after-hours trading.

Second-quarter revenue was $12.83 billion, up 29 percent from a year earlier.

Amazon's product revenue, which includes its traditional online retail business, grew 25 percent to $10.79 billion.

Amazon's services revenue, which includes its online marketplace for third-party merchants and its cloud computing business Amazon Web Services, surged 57 percent to $2.04 billion.

These newer businesses are more profitable than Amazon's retail operations, so as they become a larger part of the company, overall profit margins grow.

Amazon's gross profit margin was 26.1 percent in the second quarter, up from 24.1 percent a year earlier, according to Scott Tilghman, an analyst at Caris & Co.

"There was tremendous growth in Amazon's higher-margin services," Tilghman said. "I can't find a quarter in the past nine years when Amazon's gross margin was over 26 percent."

FORECAST, SPENDING

Net income was $7 million, or one cent per share, versus $191 million, or 41 cents a share, a year earlier, the company said.

Amazon forecast third-quarter revenue of $12.9 billion to $14.3 billion. Analysts were forecasting $14.1 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Amazon also forecast a third-quarter operating loss of $50 million to $350 million. Excluding stock-based compensation and other items, the forecast was between a loss of $75 million and a profit of $225 million.

Analysts at JP Morgan, Raymond James and Caris & Co were looking for third-quarter operating profit of $258 million, $280 million and $388 million respectively. Those forecasts excluded stock-based compensation and other items.

"The real story here is around guidance - it was a little bit light from what people were expecting and the bottom line much lower than what people would have expected," said Needham and Co analyst Kerry Rice.

"They're going to spend to build the infrastructure and capacity to deliver the products and services that they feel the consumer wants," he added. "I don't know that we can say they are investing or spending too much. It's certainly more than people expected."

A pinch of opportunity makes deep inequality more palatable

ScienceDaily (July 26, 2012) ? Just a tiny hint of opportunity has a disproportionately powerful effect -- making unfairness more acceptable to disadvantaged people, new research has found.

A study by Eugenio Proto, an economist from the Centre for Competitive Advantage in the Global Economy (CAGE) at the University of Warwick and two other co-authors, looked at decision-making and how it was influenced by people's perceptions of fairness.

Researchers set up a game between two people where one person (the proposer) offers to split ?10 between themselves and their partner, with the proposer able to decide the exact amount he or she is willing to offer.

If that amount is not accepted by to the second person (the responder) then neither gets any money.

Known as an ultimatum game, this kind of set-up is frequently studied by economists -- but for the first time the CAGE experiment introduced an element of inequality via an increasingly-biased rigged lottery to decide who becomes the proposer, the stronger of the two positions.

It makes sense that when people see clear-cut unfairness, they are less likely to accept it -- and this was shown in the results.

When the opportunity to become the proposer was 50 per cent -- i.e completely fair -- responders on average rejected an offer by the proposer of ?2.15 or less.

And when the chance of becoming the proposer was rigged at 0 per cent -- i.e complete inequality -- responders rejected offers of ?2.96 or less.

But when just a one per cent chance of becoming a proposer was introduced -- i.e the lottery was still vastly rigged biased in the proposer's favour -- responders rejected offers of ?2.53 or less.

In other words the difference between having absolutely no chance and having just a one per cent chance was valued at 43p (?2.96 -- ?2.53) -- proportionally much larger than the 38p value (?2.53 -- ?2.15) given to the gap between 1 and 50 per cent.

Dr Eugenio Proto, Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Warwick, said he was surprised to discover this quirk in human decision-making.

"When you look at it rationally, it makes no sense that people are placing such a disproportionate value on that first one per cent increase in opportunity.

"But that slight increase in fairness seems to have some kind of symbolic meaning.

"It appears people are happy to accept extreme inequality when they have this tiny carrot dangled in front of them.

"We've got to remember that our experiments are conducted in a lab at a university, not in the real world which is far more complex.

"But these results could shed light on why people living in unequal societies aren't more vocal in rejecting unfairness.

"It seems that even if people believe they have just the tiniest of chances to become the next Bill Gates, it's enough to keep them tolerant of obvious inequality."

Anirban Kar of the Delhi School of Economics, one of the other two co-authors, added: "It makes sense that when people see clear-cut unfairness in the system, they are more likely to reject an unequal outcome than if the same outcome was generated by a fair system.

"Participation in the system, surprisingly enough, even a symbolic one (a modicum of voice) seems to have a significant impact."

The research paper Everyone Wants a Chance: Initial Positions and Fairness in Ultimatum Gameswas co-authored with Gianluca Grimalda of Universitat Jaume I, Castell? in Spain and Anirban Kar of the Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi.

SA Sports Minister at Commonwealth Meeting in London ? St ...

LONDON ? Minister of Sport and Recreation SA, Hon. Fikile Mbalula, has today attended the 6th Commonwealth Sports Ministers meeting at the Banquetting House, London, United Kingdom.

The meeting focused on the important contribution sport and physical activity can make to development efforts across the Commonwealth.? The Ministers discussed principles and policy options to maximize sports contribution to human and social development including capitalizing on the potential of the Commonwealth Games and major sport events.

Chaired by Mr Hugh Robertson, MP, Minister of Sport and The Olympics, UK, the meeting reflected on the changing landscape of sport across the Commonwealth and the need for the Commonwealth countries to take a proactive stance to combat threats to the integrity of sport.
The Ministers pushed for the relaxation of Visa requirements to encourage a free movement during the sporting events.? They? further commended South Africa for the way they drove the strong balance between autonomy and accountability within the sport bodies and federations.

?The drive for international omnibus regulatory framework has gained a lot of momentum and credence amongst the delegates? Minister Mbalula said.

The meeting, according to Minister Mbalula, also urged governments to ensure good governance does not end within government but must cascade to regional, continental and international bodies like CAF, FIFA, IOC etc, to ensure congruence on the side of sporting bodies.

The issue of development taking place at various Commonwealth countries was also tabled with Minister Mbalula presenting on the National Sport and Recreation Plan.? ?South Africa is fortunate that Cabinet has already approved the National Sport and Recreational Plan, which will see sport development and peace linking up and taking shape at an elementary level to high performance, through a thorough hawk-eye talent identification and nurturing process.? said Minister Mbalula.

The Commonwealth Ministers also commended India for hosting the last Commonwealth games.

Minister Mbalula, also hinted that there is also a ?discussion within South Africa, with Sascoc and other stakeholders, to look at the issue of Sport Economy in line with the BRICS objective, wherein the SA, Brazil, Russia, India and China can help each other in all spheres of sport; development, scientific programme, broadcasting and telecommunications?.

Minister Fikile Mbalula, who?l be traveling to Coventry to watch the Banyana Banyana game against Sweden today, said ?Sweden is a strong team in women football.? Even in their country they are the most respected soccer team than their male counterparts, so here we are faced with an uphill battle but, we are still within the Mandela Month coupled with the African sky which has taken over the British sky, and therefore everything?s possible and we wish Banyana all the best in their inaugural Olympic presence?
