China's space program shoots for moon, Mars, Venus (AP)

BEIJING ? This year, a rocket will carry a boxcar-sized module into orbit, the first building block for a Chinese space station. Around 2013, China plans to launch a lunar probe that will set a rover loose on the moon. It wants to put a man on the moon, sometime after 2020.

While the United States is still working out its next move after the space shuttle program, China is forging ahead. Some experts worry the U.S. could slip behind China in human spaceflight ? the realm of space science with the most prestige.

"Space leadership is highly symbolic of national capabilities and international influence, and a decline in space leadership will be seen as symbolic of a relative decline in U.S. power and influence," said Scott Pace, an associate NASA administrator in the George W. Bush administration. He was a supporter of Bush's plan ? shelved by President Barack Obama ? to return Americans to the moon.

China is still far behind the U.S. in space technology and experience, but what it doesn't lack is a plan or financial resources. While U.S. programs can fall victim to budgetary worries or a change of government, rapidly growing China appears to have no such constraints.

"One of the biggest advantages of their system is that they have five-year plans so they can develop well ahead," said Peter Bond, consultant editor for Jane's Space Systems and Industry. "They are taking a step-by-step approach, taking their time and gradually improving their capabilities. They are putting all the pieces together for a very capable, advanced space industry."

In 2003, China became the third country to send an astronaut into space on its own, four decades after the United States and Russia. In 2006, it sent its first probe to the moon. In 2008, China carried out its first spacewalk.

China's space station is slated to open around 2020, the same year the International Space Station is scheduled to close. If the U.S. and its partners don't come up with a replacement, China could have the only permanent human presence in the sky.

Its space laboratory module, due to be launched later this year, will test docking techniques for the space station. China's version will be smaller than the International Space Station, which is the size of a football field and jointly operated by the U.S., Russia, Canada, Japan and 11 European countries.

"China has lagged 20 to 40 years behind the U.S. in developing space programs and China has no intention of challenging U.S. dominance in space," said He Qisong, a professor at Shanghai University of Political Science and Law. "But it is a sign of the national spirit for China to develop a space program and therefore it is of great significance for China."

Some elements of China's program, notably the firing of a ground-based missile into one of its dead satellites four years ago, have alarmed American officials and others who say such moves could set off a race to militarize space. That the program is run by the military has made the U.S. reluctant to cooperate with China in space, even though the latter insists its program is purely for peaceful ends.

"Space technology can be applied for both civilian and military use, but China doesn't stress the military purpose," said Li Longchen, retired editor-in-chief of Chinese magazine "Space Probe." "It has been always hard for humankind to march into space and China must learn the lessons from the U.S."

China is not the only country aiming high in space. Russia has talked about building a base on the moon and a possible mission to Mars but hasn't set a time frame. India has achieved an unmanned orbit of the moon and plans its first manned space flight in 2016.

The U.S. has no plans to return to the moon. "We've been there before," Obama said last year. "There's a lot more of space to explore." He prefers sending astronauts to land on an asteroid by 2025 and ultimately to Mars. But those plans are far from set.

Instead, NASA is closing out its 30-year space shuttle era this month, leaving the U.S. dependent on hitching rides to the space station aboard Russian Soyuz capsules at a cost of $56 million per passenger, rising to $63 million from 2014. The U.S. also hopes private companies will develop spacecraft to ferry cargo and crew to the space station.

China, having orbited the moon and starting collecting data on it, is moving toward sending a man there ? and beyond. It hopes to launch the rover-releasing moon probe in about two years. Chinese experts believe a moon landing will happen in 2025 at the earliest.

"The lunar probe is the starting point for deep space exploration," said Wu Weiren, chief designer of China's moon-exploring program, in a 2010 interview posted on the national space agency's website. "We first need to do a good job of exploring the moon and work out the rocket, transportation and detection technology that can then be used for a future exploration of Mars or Venus."

In testimony in May to the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission, which reports to the U.S. Congress, former NASA official Pace said what China learns in its space program can be applied elsewhere: improving the accuracy of ballistic missiles and quality controls for industry.

China also offers space technology to developing countries to secure access to raw materials, said Pace, now director of the Space Policy Institute at George Washington University.

There may also be economic reasons to explore the moon: It contains minerals and helium-3, a potential rich source of energy through nuclear fusion.

"But that's way ahead," said Bond, the Jane's editor. "A lot of it would be prestige, the fact that every time we went out and looked at the moon in the night sky we would say the Chinese flag is on there."

Japanese tourist dies hiking popular Arizona trail (AP)

PRESCOTT, Ariz. ? Arizona authorities say a Japanese tourist has died after falling 50 to 100 feet from a ledge on a popular hiking trail.

The Yavapai County Sheriff's Office says deputies searched a trailhead at Bell Rock near Sedona and found the 51-year-old woman's body Thursday afternoon.

She was identified Friday as Yumiko Hayashi. She had been reported missing from a nearby resort a day earlier. Authorities didn't immediately provide her hometown.

Sheriff's officials say they contacted the Japanese Consulate for assistance in locating the woman's family back in Japan.

Detectives are investigating but authorities do not suspect foul play.

Flipboard?s new content guide keeps the app a must-have (Appolicious)

When I last reviewed Flipboard back in December, I flipped for its updated features. Now, the iPad app has rolled out another set of improvements, all of which make the service better and keep Flipboard firmly at the top of my must-have apps for iPad list.

Previously, Flipboard users would have to add sources to their favorite spaces in order to access content within the app. Although favorites remain ? and are still a great option for tracking your favorite sources ? the new Content Guide lets users read and search for any topic across all of Flipboard?s sources without favoriting. Adding sources to favorites was never a heavy commitment, since all of Flipboard?s content is free, but dropping this requirement just makes the app so much more user-friendly ? a great thing when you already consider how smooth the GUI is. To access the Content Guide, tap the red ribbon found at the top of the screen and you?ll see tabs for your existing social networks along with category breakdowns of all of Flipboard?s sources. There?s also a search bar for you to find keywords or names. The Content Guide also offers access to favorite sources, which means you can favorite more items than will fit on the app?s main pages.

In addition to the Content Guide, Flipboard has also added integration for LinkedIn, and now marks popular stories with a banner. The app is faster, too, taking you fully into an article with one tap, rather than first displaying a thumbnail view of the article.

I?m still waiting for Flipboard to offer support for multiple users, but overall I only have good things to say about this stellar app. The improvements the company has made show it?s listening to user wants, and I?m excited to see what Flipboard comes up with next.

Logitech G930 Wireless PC Gaming Headset Review

Up until a few days ago I worked with wired PC headset exclusively. That worked considerably well, with the exception of the rate that I burned through those headsets. I usually needed to buy a new one every six to nine months or so, mostly because of cable problems.

It came to the point that I made the decision to get a wireless headset to get rid of the cable problems once and for all. I knew that wireless headsets with microphone were expensive, and that I had to pay more than double compared to a wired headset.

After reviewing several wireless headsets over the past weeks I decided to order the Logitech G930 Wireless PC gaming headset. The headset seemed to have driver problems in the beginning, but recent reviews on sites like Amazon showed that Logitech managed to resolve those issues.

The wireless headset is delivered in a big box. It contains the headset, a wireless adapter dock, the wireless adapter, manuals and a CD with the latest drivers.

logitech g930

Installation is a breeze. You need to start with the software from CD before you plug in the headset in the computer. Plug-in? Yes, the headset needs to be charged. While it comes with a certain amount of juice, it is not fully charged. Please note that the headset will work without the driver but you won?t be able to use some of its features, surround sound for instance.

How does the charging work? You connect the wireless dock to the PC. This is done via a standard USB cable. You then plug the wireless adapter into the dock and connect the mini USB connector to the headset. The headset indicates the charging status with a LED. Steady green means it is fully charged and ready for use. You can use it before but will have less time doing so.

You find lots of controls on the headset. It comes with volume control for instance which is very handy when playing games or listening to music, especially if you are not at your PC at the time. The volume control and the mic mute button have been put directly on the left ear cup where they can be easily reached. The microphone is automatically muted if you move it to its up position. It features an LED at its tip that indicates if it is muted or not. You find a switch to enable or disable surround sound there as well. Surround sound only works if the Logitech drivers are installed.

Three macro buttons are located on the left ear cup as well. These can be programmed in the Logitech G930 software. Some standard features, like playing and pausing, skipping forward and back, voice morphing or push to talk are already available as presets.

logitech g930 software

The software can be used to configure the three G keys. Profiles are available for programs like iTunes, Winamp, Windows Media Player or applications of the user?s choice. The system is plugin driven which means that you can download and install plugins to add support for additional programs or applications.

The software offers various controls, volume, microphone and bass for instance which you can modify to suite your taste. Experienced users can fine tune the sound further with a click on the advanced equalizer button.

The voice morphing capabilities are not really impressive, and probably not needed by most users. While it may be fun to talk like a robot or an alien once or twice, it is nothing that most people would want to do on a regular basis, especially if the voice morphing quality is put into consideration. Hint, it is weak.

The headband can be adjusted to fit comfortable. The noise isolation ear cups are large and enclose (most) ears fully. The headset itself is not heavy at all and very comfortable to use, even for hours. The noise cancelling microphone is bendable even though it does not look that way on first glance. You can bend it to find the optimal speaking position.

Logitech claims that the headset has a reach of about 12 meters. While I was not able to test that, I can confirm that the headset works everywhere in my apartment. Quality remains the same regardless of distance to the PC.

Another claim is that the battery power lasts up to 10 hours. It is safe to say that this is more of an upper limit. A more realistic figure is six or seven hours. That?s not a big problem though as you can plug the wireless headset right into the docking station to continue working with the headset, provided that you are at your PC and not somewhere else in your apartment or office.

Some users, especially users running Windows 7 64-bit have reported a cracking noise when playing music. I experienced the same issue at the beginning, but was able to resolve it by disabling all other sound playback and recording devices under the Sound Control Panel.

The price tag is heavy, even for a wireless gaming headset. It will set you back roughly 90 Dollars and 140 Euros (that?s twice the Dollar price), lots of money which you could easily invest into two high quality wired headsets. Still, a wireless headset is way more comfortable to use. Imagine calling someone on your PC. With a wired headset you need to stay near the PC, with a wireless headset you can walk around, grab a coffee or look for something in your office that you need during the call.

Would I buy the headset again? Yes I would, provided that it won?t break or stop working in a month or two. Amazon.com is currently selling the wireless headset for less than $100. Considering that I paid almost twice the amount, I?d say that this is a bargain:
