?The story never claims that Goodell ?steered? him into signing with Philly, or that he was ?forbidden? from signing with Buffalo or Cincinnati. That came from the Deadspin piece last night, which everyone ran with.? (Those Deadspin rascals. CAN?T TRUST ?EM.)?

Leitch is the founder of Deadspin.? He remains the site?s Editor Emeritus.? Though we?re tempted to characterize his comments as a case of Deadspin-on-Deadspin crime, he?s clearly joking.? (Unfortunately.)

Deadspin had the first word on the interview because, frankly, Deadspin disregarded the embargo that GQ placed on the excerpts of the story.? That said, Deadspin didn?t set the agenda for interpreting Vick?s words and the words used by Leitch to characterize Vick?s words.? We received the same excerpts Deadspin received, and I?d already concluded that Vick was saying he had been steered by the league to the Eagles before I saw the Deadspin article last night.

And for good reason.? The e-mail from GQ led with the following excerpt:

?Michael Vick on not originally wanting to come to Philly:

??I think I can say this now, because it?s not going to hurt anybody?s feelings, and it?s the truth? I didn?t want to come to Philadelphia. Being the third-team quarterback is nothing to smile about. Cincinnati and Buffalo were better options.?

?Those two teams wanted him and would?ve allowed him to start, but after meeting with commissioner Roger Goodell and other reps from the NFL, Vick was convinced?and granted league approval?to sign with Philly.? ?And I commend and thank them, because they put me in the right situation.??

With due respect to Vick and to the Eagles and to the NFL and to Leitch, that passage implies pretty strongly that ?Goodell and other reps from the NFL? at least advised and at most coerced Vick to pick the Eagles.? The choice of words clearly indicates a causal link between the input from Goodell and other league officials and Vick?s decision.? However, Leitch believes that the truth lies in the difference between the words ?convinced? and ?persuaded.?

?The piece says that he was convinced (not ?persuaded?) to sign with Philadelphia, and that he got league approval to do so,? Leitch said.? ?That is all the story has said from the beginning.? These things are undeniably true. Vick had countless advisors on that critical move, and Goodell and the NFL ? obviously ? were a part of the process. This
?steering? and ?forbidden? business came from places outside of this story.?

He?s right that the words ?steering? and ?forbidden? were applied to the situation by others.? But when Leitch writes that ?after meeting with commissioner Roger Goodell and other reps from the NFL, Vick was convinced ? and granted league approval ? to sign with Philly,? and when the next sentence consists of a quote from Vick in which he says ?I commend and thank them, because they put me in the right situation,? a reasonable person of reasonable intelligence reasonably could conclude that Vick didn?t ?convince? himself to join the Eagles, but that others ?convinced? him to do it.? When the subsequent thought consists of a quote in which Vick ?commend[s] and thank[s] them? because ?they put [him] in the right situation,? it?s also fair and reasonable to infer that Vick?s decision was the product of the advice, or something stronger, of others.

Vick didn?t say he put himself in Philly.? He said ?they put [him]? there.

The fact that Leitch believes his article to be consistent with Vick?s statement takes considerable sting ? and steam ? out of the situation.? But the article says what the article says, and Deadpin, PFT, NFL.com, and plenty of others interpreted the article to say that Goodell and other league officials infringed upon Vick?s independent process of picking a team and advised, encouraged, urged, and/or steered Vick to pick the Eagles.

Analysis: Jobs, travel, biscuits: cost squeeze at Europe's banks (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? Closing branches during the summer lull and telling staff to cut back on biscuits and book cheap flights: banks have rarely been battling harder to cut costs -- and even the most minor expenses are coming under fire.

At a time of tepid revenue growth and tougher regulations, chopping back costs is one of the few levers banks have to boost profit. Lay-offs sweeping the industry are the most visible result, but those still in a job are also feeling the pinch.

"You will usually get a wave of petty restrictions, as much to get the message across to staff as to actually cut costs," said one consultant working with top international lenders.

Bans on travel for a week each month and restrictions on color photocopying and biscuits within offices were examples of banks stamping out more trivial expenses, he said.

An analysis by Reuters of revenue and cost trends show how the problem has deepened for banks. Aggregate revenue for 11 of Europe's biggest banks dropped 3 percent in the first half of this year from a year ago, while costs rose by 4 percent.

That accelerated a long-term trend. Revenue for the same 11 banks rose 32 percent from the first half of 2005, but costs leapt by 45 percent, according to the Reuters analysis.

Costs at all but one of the banks were up on a year ago and most have shown costs as a percentage of revenue higher than six years ago, often sharply.

At Credit Suisse (CSGN.VX), operating expenses as a share of net revenues soared to 80.8 percent in the first half from 72.9 percent a year ago and 42.7 percent in the first half of 2005.

That means for every 100 francs taken by the bank, over 80 francs went out the door on staff and other costs.

Comparing cost/income ratios at banks is difficult, because reporting is not standardized, but the trend is clear.

HSBC's (HSBA.L) cost/income jumped to 57.5 percent this year from 50.9 percent a year ago, and UBS's (UBSN.VX) was up to 72.4 percent from 67.2 percent. Banks across Europe also showed big rises, such as Societe Generale (SOGN.PA), Barclays (BARC.L), Lloyds (LLOY.L), BBVA (BBVA.MC) and RBS (RBS.L).

The need to reverse the trend has prompted banks to consider deep cuts and inflict savings plans to appease investors. HSBC, Europe's biggest bank, plans to cut 30,000 jobs and $3.5 billion of annual costs.

In all, European banks in recent months have announced plans to shed over 50,000 jobs, with Lloyds, UBS, Credit Suisse and Barclays all wielding the axe.

Many observers reckon that may just be a foretaste of what is to come, as economic recovery wobbles badly.

Fixed wages have jumped over the past two years as a consequence of the regulatory clampdown on bonuses, which banks say has left them with less flexibility during downturns: in the past they could slash bonuses.

ALL COSTS SCRUTINISED

Lenders are seeking savings in all areas.

"Banks are looking at three areas when it comes to costs. First, direct headcount; second, capital efficiency -- their businesses that consume too much capital to earn a good return; and third, non-compensation expenses," said Gareth Hunt, a banking analyst at Investec.

As in previous downturns, budgets for marketing, advertising and training are coming under strain.

That will affect travel and Christmas party plans in Europe, even as a war for talent in hot markets like Hong Kong continues. So while HSBC reckons it can save $100 million on its office paper costs, it plans to continue hiring in Asia.

"The message is that top performing staff in Hong Kong don't need to worry about their bonus, but the person that sells them paper clips does," Hunt said.

Travel is always an early casualty. Junior bankers will be asked to travel in economy class rather than in business, or even shift to budget airlines such as easyJet.

Other moves include Spain's Banesto (BTO.MC) closing 228 of its 1,768 branches in Spain during August to cut costs.

AN AWFUL LOT OF SOCKS

Moving jobs to lower cost locations, streamlining IT processes and combining operations into regional centers are all being looked at -- as they have in the past -- while more emphasis on mobile and internet retail banking can cut branch overheads.

Barclays Chief Executive Bob Diamond plans to cut 1 billion pounds of costs in three years, and reckons double that total has already been identified.

Barclays, HSBC and others are also targeting entire businesses that do not measure up, such as a retreat from Russian retail banking.

These decisions are linked to stricter capital rules coming in under Basel III from 2013. That has shone a light on unprofitable areas, and given banks a reason to reverse strategy.

That is what is spurring many banks to say they need to go beyond what they've done in the past.

"We clearly have a cost problem," new HSBC CEO Stuart Gulliver said in May when he unveiled his strategic plan. He wants "a substantial re-engineering" that goes beyond typical cost-cutting such as cancelling newspapers, reducing travel and restricting laundry bills on business trips.

"It takes an awful lot of socks to get to $2.5 billion to $3.5 billion (of savings), so we really, really do need to look at a couple of things," he said.

Google acquiring Motorola (and its patents) for $12.5 billion (Appolicious)

Google just dropped a bombshell ? the Android maker is purchasing Motorola Mobility to the tune of $12.5 billion, with an eye toward expanding the reach and power of the Android mobile operating system.

Motorola is going to Google for $40 a share, which amounts to the $12.5 billion number, according to a press release from Google. The acquisition ?will enable Google to supercharge the Android ecosystem and will enhance competition in mobile computing,? according to the release. The transaction gives Google about 63 percent of Motorola share, and was approved by the boards of both companies, the release says.

Google CEO Larry Page said that taking on Motorola will help Google to ?supercharge? the Android ecosystem, whatever that may mean:

Motorola Mobility?s total commitment to Android has created a natural fit for our two companies. Together, we will create amazing user experiences that supercharge the entire Android ecosystem for the benefit of consumers, partners and developers. I look forward to welcoming Motorolans to our family of Googlers.

The acquisition is interesting because Google provides the Android operating system to lots of device makers around the world, allowing them to use the (mostly) open-source software on whatever devices they choose, and often with device-specific tweaks. Google grabbing Motorola, already a ?dedicated Android partner,? immediately calls into question those other relationships with mobile device makers that are in competition with Motorola.

On a conference call regarding the deal announcement this morning, however, Google reaffirmed that it plans to work ?on an equal basis? with other device makers and saying that it doesn?t make sense for Android to be available only to a single OEM (original equipment manufacturer), according to a story from TechCrunch. At least right now, Google claims that things won?t be changing between it and other device makers like HTC and Samsung, but one wonders how things might change given the fact that Google now has a vested interest in giving Motorola an edge over other Android-reliant smartphone and tablet makers.

Along with Motorola?s device manufacturing business, Google is getting a whole lot more in the deal. In a blog post, Page wrote that Google is interested in Motorola also because it is a ?market leader in the home devices and video solutions business.? Motorola also brings to the table a significant crop of mobile patents: ?approximately 14,600 granted patents and 6,700 pending patent applications, worldwide, as of January 2011,? as TechCrunch reports.

And it seems that it?s the patents that Google is really grabbing in this deal, as suggested by a few responses that Google had available from other Android device manufacturers. CEOs from LG, Sony Ericsson and HTC are all quoted by Google as saying they support Google?s move to ?defend Android,? presumably through patent acquisition, given the fact that Google just lost a big patent portfolio to a group of companies led by Apple and Microsoft. Here?s a quote from Page?s blog post:

The U.S. Department of Justice had to intervene in the results of one recent patent auction to ?protect competition and innovation in the open source software community? and it is currently looking into the results of the Nortel auction.
