SPOKANE-- Owners of an iconic restaurant in North Spokane that was nearly destroyed by a fire are still keeping busy by giving back to the community.
It has been almost three months since the Milk Bottle burned in the Garland District and it?has given the owners a lot of free time.? They prepared a free dinner for hundreds in the area Saturday night as a way of giving back.
Kris and Ed Ritchie say they are glad to be back in the kitchen.? They took charge of the Annual Christmas Eve Community Dinner this weekend.? They say they picked up groceries, completed all the prep work, cooked the entire meal and donated the supplies for dessert.? Both say they are happy to give back.
?We want to be a part of it because our restaurant burned down and we?re bored sitting at home all day,? the couple said.? ?We?ve been volunteering everyday at the Salvation Army.?
The Ritchie?s? restaurant barely survived a fire back in September of this year.? They say it?s in the process of being rebuilt, but they admit they miss cooking for others.
Saturday?s meal included a huckleberry cobbler and huckleberry ice cream, which is a favorite at their restaurant.? They expected about 400 people Saturday night.
The couple says time in the kitchen reminds them of what they are missing while their business is closed, but it also reminds them of how fortunate they are this holiday season.
?Everybody goes through these things and we know there are a lot of people out there who are worse than us,? the couple said.
Anyone can still help pay for Saturday?s meal by making a donation to the Spokane Salvation Army by the end of the year.
