Social Media 101: Why Facebook & What's a Business Page? | Big ...

We?ve all pondered or been on the receiving end of the infamous question: Do I REALLY need Facebook? As a Social Media Consultant, I?ve come to expect this question and get some sort of strange excitement out of answering it. So I figured, why not blog about it? Here are the 3 questions I hear the most in regards to this social networking phenomenon:

Why would I want to put my life out there on the internet?

While Facebook is flooded with a vast amount of people that should not be allowed to share the inside scoop (aka too much information) on their life via the internet, Facebook is just that ? flooded with a vast amount of people. For you and your business, numbers matter. You want your brand to reach as many people as possible and the fact that the majority of the population actively uses Facebook makes this social networking platform the PERFECT place to begin advertising online. And best of all ? it?s free!

Why do I need a business page if I have a personal page?

This is usually the initial rebuttal when suggesting an online marketing strategy and I have 2 primary reasons that you need both in your life.

Awesome Reason 1:

As I previously mentioned, if you?ve had Facebook for more than 15 minutes, you may have realized that some people share things that you genuinely DO NOT want to know. However, they?re your friends, so you don?t want to delete them. With a business page, friendships are one sided, taking on the persona of a ?like? and you have the option of tuning out of your personal account and into business mode with the click of a button. When viewing your typically TMI ridden newsfeed from your business page, you will only see updates from other businesses hand selected by YOU. It truly is a breath of fresh air.

Awesome Reason 2:

Let me put it this way: When it comes to facebook and marketing your business, the more friends (or likes) the merrier. However, people hate rejection. When you?re advertising on your personal page, your audience is limited to your personal friends and family that more than likely already know what you do and the few strangers that were confident enough to request your friendship (unless you?re super famous and everyone is dying to know about your personal life. In that case, can we be friends?).

In the event that you?re not airing on the side of fame but would like to, add the business page to the mix and your audience reach opens up. Not only are you able to invite your friends to ?like? your page, but you open up the floor to a variety of other people that want to know more about you and your business, but didn?t want to sit in purgatory awaiting your acceptance of their friend request.

Can I get rid of my personal page if I have a business page?

All businesses must have an owner and Facebook is no different. Pages are nested under individual (or multiple) users that are given permission to edit and post on behalf of the business.

How does this benefit you?

Social Media has become such a large, time consuming way of networking that many business owners just don?t have time to manage their presence both online and in person, but aren?t comfortable handing out personal passwords to every employee. By adding your *trusted* employees or Social Media Managers as administrators, they are able to be a voice for your company from the comfort of their own personal page. Having several page administrators also means a broader audience reach as each admin can personally invite every one of their friends!

While Facebook isn?t the only networking site, it?s a perfect pool of people ready to be influenced by your brand, making it a prime place to start to your online marketing strategy.
