The Link to Restoring Power from Within

If "He" came gently onto the screen of my mind, what would "He" say?

In our constant search to find meaning, purpose and happiness, our outer search always sends us back inside ourselves to truly listen to what is real and pure. These slides of Light will offer a peaceful yet powerful experience of our link back to Source, to the Divine, to God, to Light.

When the soul remembers the link, this link becomes the way to delete past memories and hurts that we have picked up along the journey that no longer serve us. Our lives are valuable: To be at peace with the self is a great power in the 21st century. Meditating on the Source of Love, Light, and Peace will restore the souls' power and wisdom. The time is now to reignite our power and use it to make our lives and our world a better place. May these images of God's light empower and enrich your every moment.

BlackBerry Z10 gets clip-on speakerphone, charger bundle and cases galore

BlackBerry Z10 gets clipon speakerphone, charger bundle and cases galore

No launch of a new flagship is complete without a few new accessories to go along with it. While RIM is still banking big on the NFC-powered Music Gateway, it wasn't about to let the Z10 sit around with no new friends to keep it company. Obviously, a BlackBerry isn't a BlackBerry with out few leather holsters to keep it strapped to your hip. The fancy leather cases (both the "Holster" and the "Pocket") even have a magnet inside them that automatically turns off the display on your Z10 when it's slipped inside. The rotating holster will set customers back $40, while the Pocket, with its fewer moving parts, will cost only $30. There are other cases on the horizon too, the Transform Shell and Flip Shell, which feature build in kickstands and basic protection in standard black or bright red. Both shells will retail for $35 when they hit shelves.

A bit more intriguing is the BlackBerry Mini Stereo Speaker, a tiny speaker phone that pairs using Bluetooth and has a unique "U" shape that allows you to clip it on to a seatbelt or (shudder) a lapel. The little white speaker will launch alongside the Z10 for $99. The charging bundle is pretty simple at first glance -- it contains a spare battery and a separate charging cradle for $50. But, upon closer inspection, you'll realize the charger has a microUSB out, for pushing power to any device with a compatible adapter. We're sure more fun accessories are in the pipeline too, once third parties start updating there product lines.

FT interview: Palaniappan Chidambaram, India's finance minister ...

In an interview with the Financial Times, Palaniappan Chidambaram, India?s finance minister, spoke of his determination to control pre-election public spending, support for foreign investment and plans for further financial liberalisation.

He also told Lionel Barber, the editor of the Financial Times, and James Blitz, diplomatic editor, of his political ambitions. Here is a transcript of the interview that took place on Tuesday in London during a tour to promote India among investors.

Barber: So, the interest rates cut today by Central Bank, it looks as though your campaign [for monetary easing] is bearing fruit. I just wonder, Minister, whether that?s actually the problem with interest [rates] rather than other structural problems in the economy which are leading to lower than expected [economic] growth rates.

Chidambaram: This is a debate that goes on in every country, more recently Japan. High inflation penalises the people. Equally, low growth also penalises the people. So one has to do a trade-off between inflation and growth, and I have argued ? my colleagues in Government have argued ? that perhaps a monetary authority should lean a little more in favour of growth. When they should do that, to what degree they should do that is their call. They have taken the call now, they have given the reasons, I have read the statement and I welcome the decision. But interest rates [are]? one issue that India faces. There are many other issues that have to be addressed and I hope we can address them in the days ahead.

Barber: Are you talking about corruption, bureaucracy, environmental permits, labour laws?

Chidambaram: Those are issues but I think there are issues that have greater moment. For example, how do we get stalled projects off the ground? How do we raise the savings ratio? How do we get domestic investors, both public sector and private sector, which are sitting on piles of cash, to begin the investment cycle again? These are key issues. Also the issues that you mentioned ? environmental clearance, forest clearance, other approvals, bank finance for projects ? these are other issues which have to be addressed too.

Barber: Now, I wouldn?t expect you, Minister, to reveal your hand ahead of the budget, but could you give us some idea of what you?re looking at, and also, crucially, because I know you?re doing this world tour to sell India to investors, can you give us a reassurance, to the investors, that you?re not going to have ? a spending splurge ahead of the election next year?

Chidambaram: I am quite willing to reveal my hand. It will be a responsible budget. After identifying the problems of August [when concerns about India?s fiscal deficit were growing] and subsequently, and after taking a number of steps to address those problems, how can the budget be anything but a responsible budget?

I have drawn the red lines. The red lines are that the fiscal deficit for the current year will be no more than 5.3% and the fiscal deficit for the next year will be no more than 4.8%. That?s a red line and I will not breach that red line. We have taken measures to contain expenditure, especially subsidies [for example, on fuels]. We have taken measures to augment revenues, especially through tightening tax administration. We have promised the people that next year we will aim for a higher growth rate ? between six and 7%. So I think all that we have said and all that we have done points to a responsible budget. The budget can be nothing except a responsible budget.

Barber: Minister, you refer to subsidies. Are you actually going to be strong enough, and you are seen as one of the strongest and most effective ministers in the government, but are you actually going to be strong enough to say let?s cut these fuel subsidies. The fact is, if the price goes up and down, let?s live with it. Are you strong enough to do that?

Chidambaram: I am not going to make any declarations from the pulpit. I would ask you to judge us on the basis of steps that we have taken. We have corrected diesel prices. We have made a significant correction in diesel prices. Five rupees a few months ago. That is ten cents to a litre. And then we?ve allowed the oil companies to make small corrections periodically over a period of time. We still have to correct another ten rupees, which is about 20 cents, and a beginning has been made in the month of January. ?So, judge us by the steps that we take. And, in a country where there are still a large number of poor people, the correction can only be gradual and in small steps at a time. That?s the politically wise course to take.

Barber: But the direction of travel is clear.

Chidambaram: Absolutely.

Barber: And, at some point, you would like to abandon fuel subsidies, as a long-term goal?

Chidambaram: Not all subsidies can be abandoned. Take for example kerosene, which is the cooking fuel for the very poor in rural India. Now, ask yourself a question ? what happens if you correct the subsidy on kerosene completely. It will make kerosene unaffordable to the rural poor and they will demand wood. If they demand wood, acres of forest will be wiped out in India. One has to balance these things and take a prudent decision. Some subsidies in India are indeed merit subsidies. What might appear to be non-merit subsidies from the vantage point of London or Frankfurt, some of them are indeed merit subsidies in India. So my approach, our approach is merit subsidies ? we have to maintain a certain level of merit subsidies but non-merit subsidies we should eliminate over a period of time.

Barber: Now, another important issue is the current account deficit. ?Do you think, and you have actually hinted that you?d raise [the tax] on gold imports?

Chidambaram: We have raised it. We did it a few days ago, from 4% to 6%. ?we have thrown some sand in the wheels by raising the taxes. We have also announced a link between the gold ETF scheme run my Mutual Funds, and the gold deposit scheme run by banks, which we hope will unfreeze 15, 20 tons of gold, idle gold, and bring it into the market. So if that idle gold comes into the market, it will moderate imports. And we?re looking at some other steps to moderate the import of gold.

Barber: You talked about the importance of credit, and we?ve got our own problems, as you know, in this country, with bank finance so I?m not preaching here. But the fact is the government still owns large stakes in the banking system in India. What?s the point of that and wouldn?t it be better if you sold some of those stakes? Liberalised, took the measures to liberalise the economy in the same way that was done 20 years ago. ?some people believe India is still profiting from those bold, sweeping moves.

Chidambaram: How is the public sector bank in which the government is a majority shareholder coming in the way of financial liberalisation? We have a number of private sector banks, which are successful, which are competitive. In two weeks from today, the Reserve Bank of India will announce the final guidelines for licensing more private sector banks. We expect that four to five licences will be granted. We allow foreign banks into India. We are liberal in granting branches to foreign banks more than what we are required to do under the WTO regulations. So we have, today, a variety of banks competing with each other ? foreign banks, Indian private sector banks, public sector banks, cooperative banks which are under the supervision of the State Governments. So I don?t see why a public sector bank should be seen as an obstacle to financial liberalisation. It is not. ?

Barber: ?I?m sure you?ll be asked this lots of times on your world tour, but one of the complaints made by foreign investors in India is the uncertainty in either the tax regime or legal uncertainty, and there is a very prominent case involving Vodafone. With respect, I?m not carrying water for Vodafone, just so you know that, I?m just making a general point about legal and fiscal uncertainty, retrospective tax. Now, can you give any assurances to investors that this kind of thing can be resolved quickly, that maybe there?s a compromise which will increase certainty? What can you tell us about that? ?

Chidambaram: ?I?m happy to report that Vodafone has formally written to the government offering to engage senior government officials to find a way out of the problem. They have held two rounds of discussions with my Revenue Secretary and the Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes. They are being invited to a third round of discussions this week and they expect them to come any time this week and I am looking forward to a resolution of the Vodafone issue. And I?m confident we will resolve that issue.

Barber: In the next month or so?

Chidambaram: I am trying to resolve it even sooner than that.

Barber: Really? Why are you so confident, minister?

Chidambaram: Because, for the first time, Vodafone has offered to engage the Government in a discussion to find a solution rather than persist with its Notice of Arbitration.

Barber: [You are visiting global financial centres on this trip.] What is your message in a couple of sort of succinct sentences, apart from India is open for business?

Chidambaram: My message is that India achieved a high growth and adopted the correct policies between 2004 and 2009. We were affected by the external crisis. It?s possible that we have made some mistakes too. The world thought that we had stumbled. If we have stumbled, we have picked ourselves up now. We are back on our feet and we are moving on the path of fiscal consolidation and structural reforms and promoting high growth. We hope to be able to repeat what we achieved between 2004 and 2009. And India is open, competitive, and it?s a place to do business.

Barber: What particular mistakes do you think were made?

Chidambaram: This is with the benefit of hindsight.

Barber: Of course.

Chidambaram: We had three stimulus packages. Now, there is an opinion today that the third stimulus package was perhaps entirely avoidable. Now, that?s a view. It?s difficult to say whether when the package was announced was it considered superfluous or was it considered necessary. But there is a view that perhaps a third stimulus package could have been avoided.

There is also a view that the guidelines could have been written in a different way. Again, that is the benefit of hindsight. I?m not saying there were mistakes, all I am pointing out there is a perception that we may have made some mistakes. And if that is the perception, it is my duty to correct that perception.

Barber: It?s interesting, minister, you are often regarded as somebody who is supremely self-confident and not a man readily who admits to mistakes.

Chidambaram: When did self-confidence become a vice?

Barber: Yes. I remember when we first met, in 2006, on my first trip to India, everybody was asking who is going to be ahead ? India or China. And there were different views at the time. Now, partly because of the stumbles and some of the mistakes, people think, really, that the [Chinese] hare has moved quite a long way ahead of India. What?s your view now?

Chidambaram: I don?t deny it. I admit that China is ahead of India. But we are talking in London. China has its own system. India has its own system. Business has this amazing capacity to do well and successfully both in China and in India. Business can choose between China and India. Business can choose both China and India. But do I have a choice to choose China?s system? Do I want to choose China?s system? The answer is no. I want to continue with my system of an open, democratic plural society, and if we can achieve 9% growth between 2004 and 2008 why should I not hope that we can repeat it in the next few years and continue to grow at our old pace true to our potential and resolve our problems without having to be compared with China. I don?t think it is China versus India. I think, given the way world economies will grow in the next ten to 15 years, China and India, along with the United States and maybe a couple of other countries, will be among the top five economies of the world. And I?m quite happy that India takes its place among the top five economies without worrying whether it?s one notch ahead of China or one notch behind China. ?

Barber: A couple of [other] things, if I may. The competition between Rafale and Eurofighter is something which has attracted a lot of interest here. Can India press ahead with the very expensive purchase of Rafale and, at the same time, press ahead with your deficit reduction programme, because it is a very expensive purchase indeed. Are you fully committed to it?

Chidambaram: Rafale was selected after a transparent bidding and evaluation procedure. Now, it?s well within the right of the competitor to say that Rafale is too expensive, that the other product is more competitive and better priced, but how can I second guess a transparent procedure, a transparent bidding and evaluation procedure, which finally threw up the results that Rafale will be selected? We have had the defence experts in this. We have had the air force involved in it. We?ve had civilian analysts involved in the process. And how can we find fault with the conclusion? If they find that Rafale at that price is the best product, it is the best product. ?

Barber: ?Thank you. Another question I wanted to put to you ? I?m interested in perceptions of the United Kingdom from outside the European Union at a time when we are moving towards a referendum, an in/out referendum, which could potentially take us out of the European Union. From your point of view, from the point of view of India, how is that debate seen? Is there concern that we might leave the EU, and what would the impact be for the UK if that were to happen?

Chidambaram: There won?t be any direct impact. The UK is the third largest investor in India. The UK is one of our largest trading partners. We have had historical relationships with the UK and I don?t think that will be affected whether you are in the European Union or not in the European Union. But whether you should be in the European Union or not is a matter for your government and your people to decide. There are, I believe, clear advantages in countries working together and there are clear advantages in greater cooperation, common rules and regulations. That?s my view but who am I to offer a final view? It?s for the people of the UK and the government of the UK to take a call on that issue. But our relationship with UK will only get stronger whether you are in the European Union or not.

Barber: Two last questions. One is just a technical question, Minister. The inflow of perhaps hot money, certainly funds into the equity market, are you concerned about these volatile flows? ? Possibly they increase the appreciation of the rupee.

Chidambaram: I don?t agree that they are volatile. You see, that?s the popular perception that FII [foreign institutional investors] money into equity is volatile. If you look at the cumulative FII in India since liberalisation, it has reached, I think, $244 billion. There?s a graph. $244 billion. Except for one year where the cumulative number dipped by half a billion, it has been a secular advance, which means FII money in India is not money in and money out. Net FII inflow has shown a secular rise, so it tends to remain for the long term. ?Therefore I think while FDI has a higher priority, I don?t see any reason why we should be worried about FII money in equity. As far as the Indian experience is concerned, there?s been a secular increase, cumulatively, over the years. So I would welcome both FDI and FII in equity.

Barber: In terms of your own distinguished political career, do you see yourself as a future Prime Minister?

Chidambaram: No. ?I have made it clear that I know my limitations. I live and work according to my limitations.

Barber: Do you know why I am asking this question, Mr Chidambaram? ?Your name keeps coming up as somebody who can get things done. And the other person?s name, who keeps coming up, which I?m sure you know his name, is Mr Modi [Narendra Modi, the chief minister of Gujarat, a possible opposition BJP candidate for prime minister].

So this, again, this is purely anecdotal, there are a lot of business people who are saying we need a strong man or a strong person ? I?d better be careful here ? a strong person because India is not reaching its potential. And there?s at least 2.5%, 3% GDP [of extra] growth if we could get somebody strong to crunch decisions, force these things through the bureaucracy. So that?s the background, Mr Chidambaram.

Chidambaram: Thank you. As I said, I know my limitations. I live and work according to my limitations. And my party only two weeks ago has clearly declared that the leader of the party after Ms Sonia Gandhi will be [her son] Mr Rahul Gandhi. And all of us, including me, have expressed our solid support to Mr Rahul Gandhi. ?

With The Help Of Citizen Cartographers, Google Launches More Detailed Map Of North Korea

2458338721_8b4835b9fd_zGoogle Maps is not only a strong product, it’s a strong platform. With its Map Maker tool, people from around the world can participate in making Google’s maps more detailed, accurate and up-to-date. This is exactly what happened for North Korea’s maps, Google announced today. Google’s Senior Product Manager of Map Maker, Jayanth Mysore, discussed what went into these new detailed views: To build this map, a community of citizen cartographers came together in Google Map Maker to make their contributions such as adding road names and points of interest. This effort has been active in Map Maker for a few years and today the new map of North Korea is ready and now available on Google Maps. As a result, the world can access maps of North Korea that offer much more information and detail than before. We know this map is not perfect ? one of the exciting things about maps is that the world is a constantly changing place. We encourage people from around the world to continue helping us improve the quality of these maps for everyone with Google Map Maker. From this point forward, any further approved updates to the North Korean maps in Google Map Maker will also appear on Google Maps. Here’s a before and after look at North Korea, with more details popping up thanks to the Map Maker community: We recently reported exactly how Google is managing its Map Maker community, giving them badges for accomplishments and adding more detail to make Google Maps better. While this community isn’t fully relied upon for Google Maps, it is definitely an important part of the entire system. With everything that goes into making Google Maps the most powerful service of its kind, companies like Apple who are trying to do the work on their own definitely have some catching up to do. Right now, Google allows people from 200 different regions to participate in the editing of the Maps product. Without sounding like a huge downer, this is also probably way safer than a Google Street View truck driving around in North Korea at this point.

DNA-repairing protein may be key to preventing recurrence of some cancers

Jan. 28, 2013 ? Just as the body can become resistant to antibiotics, certain methods of killing cancer tumors can end up creating resistant tumor cells. But a University of Central Florida professor has found a protein present in several types of cancer, including breast and ovarian cancer, which could be helpful in preventing tumors from coming back.

The protein, KLF8, appears to protect tumor cells from drugs aimed at killing them and even aid the tumor cells' ability to regenerate.

"All cells have a DNA-repair mechanism," explained Jihe Zhao, a medical doctor and researcher who in the past few months has published several articles related to the protein in the Journal of Biological Chemistry and Oncogene, among others. "That's why we survive constant DNA damage threats. But KLF8 is overexpressed in specific cancers, such as breast cancer and ovarian cancer. The thought is that if we can stop it from switching on, we may be able to stop the tumors from coming back as part of therapy. We still need to do a lot more research, but it is plausible.

There are between 2.5 million and 2.7 million women who have breast cancer in the United States and 10 to 20 percent will experience a recurrence, according to the American Cancer Society. Current treatment options, depending on the stage of cancer, include surgical removal followed by chemotherapy using a combination of cancer killing drugs. Each year about 22,200 women are also diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

DNA damage-based chemotherapies depend on failure of cancer cells to repair the DNA damage and subsequent cell death, according to the journal article. Aberrant high levels of DNA repair function in the cells likely increase not only the resistance of the cells to such therapies but also the malignancy of the cells due to improper DNA repair-mediated genomic and chromosomal instability.

In the study, Zhao's team tested one specific cancer-fighting drug used in the treatment of breast cancer to determine the role of the protein.

"Indeed, our results have clearly linked the KLF8-promoted DNA repair to the cell resistance to doxorubicin-induced cell death," Zhao said. "It remains to be determined whether KLF8 plays a similar role in repairing DNA damage caused by other types of genotoxic agents such as DNA alkylating agents and ionizing radiation."

Even so, the results suggest that in addition to enhancing the drug resistance of the cancer cells, KLF8 could play a role in disturbing genomic integrity through its aberrant DNA repair function and subsequently contribute to aggressive progression of cancer.

Cow smuggling ... it's how Bangladesh gets its beef

Beef is a delicacy in Bangladesh, but Hindu-majority India refuses to sell their sacred cows. The demand is so high, however, that a dangerous $920 million cow smuggling trade has popped up. ?

By Shaikh Azizur Rahman,?Contributor / January 26, 2013

An Indian Hindu man stands with a cow as he waits for alms at Sangam, the confluence of the holy rivers Ganges and Yamuna and mythical Saraswati at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Allahabad, India, last week. Cows are everywhere in India, but the cow is considered holy in the Hindu-majority country. There are 26 breeds of cow in India. The hump, long ears, and bushy tail distinguish the Indian cow.

More than 90 percent of the 160 million people who live there are Muslims and for them beef is a delicacy.?

The country's meat producers estimate that slaughterhouses need up to 3 million cows every year to feed Bangladeshi appetites, and to help meet demand, Bangladesh is eyeing neighboring India. Cows are everywhere in India, but the cow is considered holy in the Hindu-majority country. In fact, slaughtering cows is banned in many Indian states, and New Delhi refuses to export?them.

That refusal hasn't done much to deter the demand for beef in Bangladesh, however.? In fact, say officials in Dhaka, beef has become so valuable it's spurred a dangerous cow smuggling trade across the India-Bangladesh border.?

More than 2 million cows are smuggled from India to Bangladesh every year and most of the illegal trade takes place through the Indian border state of West Bengal, says Bimal Pramanik, an independent researcher in Calcutta, India.

?Bangladeshi slaughterhouses cannot source even 1 million cows from within the country. If Indian cows do not reach the Bangladeshi slaughterhouses, there will be a big crisis there,? says Mr. Pramanik, adding that 3 out of every 4 cows slaughtered in the country are from India.?

?In this thriving trade, [herds of] cows worth 50 billion rupees [$920 million] are sent across to Bangladesh every year. It?s the sheer economics of the trade that drives the smuggling,??says Pramanik.

Cattle smugglers say they routinely bribe the police, customs, Border Security Force guards, and even some politicians in India to look the other way.

However, locals call this part of the border the ?Wall of Death,? for the smuggling-related tensions that?sometimes?turn into violence. In 2012, security forces killed 48 Bangladeshis along the border, according to the Bangladeshi human rights group Ain o Salish Kendra.?

But Bangladeshis say there is a simple way to end violence along the border.

"If India begins exporting cows to Bangladesh, such untoward incidents will stop," said the Bangladeshi Commerce Minister Golam Mohammad Quader.? "We are really keen to import cows from India, and want all illegal activities involving cow trade across the border to end," he said.

The former head of India's Border Security Forces Utthan Kumar Bansal recently agreed:?

?The menace of smuggling might be best controlled if the trade across the border is made legal. The legalization of export of cows could also help curb tension on the volatile border,? Mr. Bansal said.

Although Bansal?s comment did not trigger any government reaction in India, some right wing Hindu groups said they would never let India export cows to any country.?

Radhakanta Saha, who is a World Hindu Organization leader and heads a volunteer group that aims to prevent cow smuggling in West Bengal, said: ?The cow is our mother. We shall begin country-wide agitation if India decides to export cows to a country where they are likely to be slaughtered for ... meat.?

UK: Specific threat to Westerners in Somaliland

LONDON (AP) ? British citizens should immediately leave the breakaway Somaliland region of Somalia because of a specific threat to Westerners, British diplomats said Sunday. It was the second such warning issued for an African region in just days and comes amid growing turbulence across the continent's north.

In a statement emailed to reporters, Britain's Foreign Office did not go into any further detail about the nature of the threat but noted that "kidnapping for financial or political gain, motivated by criminality or terrorism" is an issue throughout Somalia.

Somalia has endured years of civil war, and Britain ? along with the United States and a host of other countries ? has long advised against all travel to the Horn of Africa nation. Sunday's travel warning applies specifically to the northwest territory of Somaliland, which declared its independence from Somalia in 1991 and has since been a haven of relative peace amid the chaos and bloodshed of the country's south.

The new warning was issued only days after Britain, Germany, the Netherlands and Canada urged their citizens in the Libyan city of Benghazi to evacuate in response to what was then described as an imminent threat to Westerners. European officials told The Associated Press at the time that schools were thought to be among the potential targets.

The exact reason for the warnings remains unclear, but they come at a time of heightened tension across north Africa. French and African land forces are battling al-Qaida-linked Islamists in northern Mali, while a renewed bout of unrest has gripped Egypt following the two-year anniversary of the revolution that toppled strongman Hosni Mubarak.

In addition, a Jan. 16 attack on the Ain Amenas natural gas plant in the Sahara ignited a four-day siege by Algerian forces in which at least 37 hostages and 29 militants died. An al-Qaida-affiliated group has claimed responsibility for the attack. Libya also remains unstable following the overthrow of Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi.

It was unclear if any of those factors played a role in Britain's latest warning. The Foreign Office declined to comment beyond its brief statement.

Somaliland, a former British colony, is a key ally for neighboring Ethiopia, which has an embassy in the enclave, and collaborates with the United States and its allies on anti-terrorism missions. Somaliland employs its own security forces, justice system, and currency but is not recognized as a separate country by the international community.

Somaliland was most recently hit by terror attacks in 2008, when suicide car bombers struck inside the enclave and its neighboring Puntland territory, killing more than 29 people.

Which Game Console Has the Most Titles? - How-To Geek

Answer: Playstation 2

When it comes to the largest selection of console titles, there isn?t a console, old or new, that can hold a candle to the immense collection of Playstation 2 titles available.

The Playstation 2 was originally released in March of 2000 and officially discontinued in January of 2013. ?In the nearly 13 years of active production over 2,000 titles were released for the console. ?This volume places the title list for the Playstation 2 well beyond any other console and miles beyond other sixth generation consoles such as the Gamecube (646 titles), the Xbox (986 titles), and the Dreamcast (720 titles).

In Washington, a proposal to sell naming rights

(AP) ? As many state and local governments across the nation deal with the aftermath of severe budget cuts prompted by the Great Recession, a Washington state lawmaker has put forth a plan to increase revenue without raising taxes: Allow the sale of naming rights to publicly owned facilities.

"I'm trying to think out of the box and come up with some revenue for our local folks and for our state that isn't another dollar out of our taxpayers' wallets," said Republican state Rep. Jan Angel.

The practice has been in place elsewhere for decades, most prominently on sports venues. The results have ranged from memorable, Busch Stadium in St. Louis, to regrettable, Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento, Calif.

The proposal has sparked a measure of skepticism in Washington state among those who think it would give the appearance that government influence is for sale.

"I think perhaps of the CenturyLink Capitol building or something like that," said Democratic state Rep. Sam Hunt, during a recent committee hearing. "How far could this go?"

Angel's plans include measures that would allow private bidders to pay state and local governments for the right to name everything from government buildings to schools. She maintains that reception to her bills has been very positive.

In addition to raising funds, Angel, who represents a district west of Seattle that includes the town of Port Orchard, says she wants to provide firmer legal footing for local governments in Washington state that already are engaged in the practice.

Washington state isn't alone in considering such plans.

Virginia lawmakers last year passed a measure allowing the state to sell naming rights to its bridges and roads. Shortly thereafter, the state signed a $2 million yearly deal granting GEICO Insurance naming rights to all 43 of its rest areas.

New Hampshire and Florida lawmakers discussed similar legislation last year, to no avail. New Hampshire, however, is set to try again this year.

Several local government agencies also have gotten in on the action.

In Philadelphia in 2010, AT&T paid $5 million to put its name on a downtown transit station for five years.

A year before that in New York City, the British bank Barclays bought the naming rights to a bustling Brooklyn subway station for $200,000 per year. The bank's name also is attached to the adjacent arena that is home to the NBA's Brooklyn Nets.

In Washington, Angel says she is particularly interested in raising cash by selling the naming rights to the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. The state owes more than $45 million a year in debt payments on the span. Money for those payments is raised by bridge tolls. Those fees are slated to increase from the current $4 to $6 per round trip in 2015, a scenario Angel hopes to avoid. It was not immediately clear, however, whether the plan would be able to accomplish this goal.

Despite the potential to provide cash, critics say that such deals are inappropriate.

"The problem is it's not money for nothing," said Robert Weissman, president of Public Citizen, a left-leaning Washington D.C.-based consumer advocacy group.

Weissman says he understands why some lawmakers find the approach appealing, but argues that it should be abandoned.

"It erases the important and appropriate divide between the commercial sphere and the civil sphere and communicates a message that everything is for sale," he said.

Under Angel's plans, no government entity would be compelled to sell naming rights to any given property. And governments would still have the ability to name memorials after notable people for free.

She said money raised would go toward the renamed facilities and that the proposals would leave up to local control issues including who gets to buy the names, how the rights would be sold and how names would be displayed.

The measures would not allow obscene or offensive names. Nor would they allow names of tobacco or cannabis companies.

Angel said her bills put to legislators the question: If we so desperately need revenue, why not give it a try?

"Nothing ventured," she added, "nothing gained."

Realtor Marketing ? Should You Use WiseAgent, Top Producer or ...

Realtor Marketing – Should You Use WiseAgent, Top Producer or InfusionSoft? So today?s post is for my bestie, the fabulous Deb Ward (send her all your referrals for the Tampa Bay area because she lets me call her out to your benefit!)

So you are just getting into real estate or your are thinking about changing your real estate database over to something new. You have heard at conferences and from your broker that the best two on the market for realtors are WiseAgent and Top Producer so you figure they will be good enough. Sigh?

So what is so wrong with using a realtor database instead of a ?real?, internet marketing database like InfusionSoft, iContact, Office Auto Pilot or any of the others out there on the market? Here is my take at 40,000 feet (read first and then watch the video)

1. Realtors have been told for eons that they need a realtor solution. They like marketing tools specifically made for realtors without looking around at their fellow realtors. These tools are made for the lowest common denominator, the agent who can barely work her cell phone and who is using the company website. Some of these dears are AMAZINGLY successful, but they are not exactly cutting edge on the technology front!

2. Having your listing process or closing tasks embedded in your real estate database might be a good idea, but most of the realtors I have talked to lately are using a third party closer or are using a system embedded in their broker site or MLS. The last thing you want is to have all your closing tasks in your marketing database (in my opinion). Your marketing database is bring in leads, lots of them, and then nurture them until they become real prospects.

3. Having a database that is a marketing database instead of a realtor database means that you will have actual tools for prospecting, building your website, collecting leads, sending autoresponders and generally doing real marketing instead of just tired old drip campaigns that annoy your prospects.

4. If you are primarily a listing agent, why the heck do you make the main focus of your website data capturing buyers likes and dislikes?

So finally to realtor marketing databases?.

Deb is currently using WiseAgent and there are some good things in there for realtors?but darn it, I don?t care about realtor stuff, because she is my friend, I care about her getting more real leads, having more closings and making more money. That?s it. I don?t sugar coat it with her and so I am going to give you the real deal info too!

You need to start internet marketing right now! You need to have programs and campaigns specifically designed to prospect for people that you want to work with. If you are working with buyers, you need to make sure that you marketing is geared to fulfilling their needs, sellers need something different and you want to make sure to satisfy that too!

Some examples for buyers include? free relocation guides for buyers, a native?s tour of your town, top restaurants in the area, subdivision info, etc.

Some examples for sellers include? tips for home staging, honest talk about pricing, a checklist of what to get fixed BEFORE you list your house, etc. (ohohoh thought of another one! how to list your house so that you get cash offers instead of having to deal with Jumbo loans)

Do you see a theme here? If EVERY OTHER REAL ESTATE WEBSITE in the world has listings or heaven forbid an offer for a free CMA and you have real information that would actually help them, who do you think is going to get that phone call to come list me?.:)

So what are we going to start with? A FSBO email marketing autoresponder. The FSBO signs up to get tips and tricks on how to be a better seller and Deb gets the chance to start a relationship with them without having to lift a finger!!! (find out how to do a campaign like this yourself at Tools for Realtors ? there is an opt in form on the right)

So what are the steps?

1. Make a series of videos (as you can see in the free course, we didn?t go high tech here?just good solid info from Deb!)
2. Set up a web form to capture data (in the video below) and then
3. set up the email followups

That is it! I KNOW the first time you see this it seems like it is SO many steps but never fear, the first time you do anything it is hard, after that you do a system and then just start banging them out.

this is recorded in real time?.:)

So, to wrap up. Your website should be made to do just one thing, capture leads from people who want to work with YOU (not just buy houses). You need a database that has internet marketing capabilities (I recommend InfusionSoft because of the ease of use and that handy dandy campaign builder), then you need to do some follow up emails, ensuring you stay top of mind when they are looking for a real estate agent to hire!

(that IS an affiliate link for InfusionSoft! I SO love them?:)

News in Brief: Reprieve for reprogrammed stem cells

What could have been a stumbling block for using reprogrammed stem cells in the clinic may barely be a bump in the road

What could have been a stumbling block for using reprogrammed stem cells in the clinic may barely be a bump in the road. A study published in 2011 in Nature found that stem cells produced by reprogramming mouse skin cells get attacked when transplanted back into mice. Stem cells derived from embryos didn?t similarly rile the immune system. The finding was unexpected because reprogrammed stem cells, also known as induced pluripotent stem cells, or iPS cells, come from the mouse or person into whom they are transplanted, so the immune system shouldn?t recognize them as foreign. Now Masumi Abe of the Japanese National Institute of Radiological Sciences in Chiba and colleagues have performed a more expansive version of the earlier study, examining 10 different types of iPS cells and seven types of embryonic stem cells to address the potential problem. Neither embryonic stem cells nor iPS cells provoked the immune system to attack to any significant degree when transplanted into mice, the researchers report online January 9 in Nature. However, heart muscle cells grown from iPS cells in a lab dish did stir up the immune system, which may be cause for concern.

Taylor Swift ends rumours of reunion with Harry Styles: 'Once a ...

Yeah, we kind of got that from We Are Never Getting Back Together.

Taylor Swift has managed to do extinguish (some of) the millions and zillions of rumours that have come about after she and Harry Styles called it a day on their short and oh so sweet/mental romance.

Chatting on Spanish TV show El Hormiguero, TayTay spoke about the crazy amount of attention that her relationships seem to accumulate in the media, and alluded to the bunny boiler girlfriend image thats been slapped on her recently.

taylor swift

?People say that I?m buying houses all the time that I?m not buying. It?s like every time the press thinks I like a guy, they say I am buying a house next to them.?

Oh. Well, yep, that was definitely a rumour about her and Harry. So we can cross that one off at least. *pulls out official Haylor notepad*

She went on to say that, ?I think once a relationship is done, it?s done. You can?t do that back and forth thing. It?s the most exhausting process?.

Haylor

It?s not nearly as exhausting as trying to follow who you?re going out with Swifty. We?re wondering whether this is her genuinely calling quits on the relationship, or if it?s BITTER RETALIATION, after Harry apparently refused to meet up with her whilst she was in London recently.

?Taylor was desperate to meet up with Harry in London, but he totally ignored her,? a source told RadarOnline. ?He told her he had too much going on, even though she purposely arranged to stay at a hotel that wasn?t too far away from his home.?

Oooh-err, sounds like a major awkward sitch. The pair are both in Cannes at the moment for the NRJ Awards, so we are not moving from our computer screens until we find out what in LIAM PAYNE?S NAME is ACTUALLY going on with these two.

Hrumph.

What do you make of Taylor?s comments on her lovelife?

Best Online Website Promotion ? Dedicated Servers

Sharing knowledge on the web can be a very powerful way to establish your online presence and credibility. First, you write a thoughtful and informative article on an topic in your area of expertise. Then you submit it to e-zines to be read by the general public and possibly re-published on other web sites. Appended to the end of your article is a resource box containing a brief promotional message linking to your web site. Webmasters who wish to reprint your article on their sites are required to include your resource box along with any live links to your site. The benefit that you get from your article is two-fold. First, your article will be read by visitors to the e-zine site. If they find it helpful and interesting, they will likely visit your web site to see what else you had to offer. Second, webmasters who find your article useful to their visitors may re-publish it on their sites, giving your article additional exposure. Every time your article is re-published on a web site, you gain an additional one-way link to your site through the live link in your resource box. This adds to your link popularity and ultimately increases your search engine rankings.  As you can see, the true potential of your article lies in its ability to propagate virally in cyberspace. For your article to propagate virally, it should appeal to both readers and webmasters alike. Keep in mind that your goal is hold your readers attention long enough for them to get to the  resource box.  If your article is boring and uninformative, few people will read it beyond the first or second paragraph. Below are some pointers to consider when writing an article: 1. Give your article a catchy title. Your title is the first and often the only thing that visitors see when they skim through a list of articles on an e-zine page. Put some thought into coming up with a title that grabs the reader?s attention right away. Words like Secrets,Free, and Successful tend to attract more attention than others. 2. Your article should not read like an ad. Most people read articles to find information they can use, not to see a pitch about your products or services.  If they see your article as nothing more than a shameless act of self promotion, they?ll get turned off and hit the Back button right away.  Put yourself in the reader?s shoes. What benefits do you want to get out of reading an article?  Cater to your reader?s  interests rather than your own. 3. Offer lots of free, useful information. Following on the last tip, keep in mind that your readers are looking for specific how-to instructions to help them achieve a certain goal.  Offer lots of tangible information that is immediately useful to them. Do not lead them through hoops just to get to an order 4) Avoid gimmicks. While it may be true that a sucker is born every minute, most internet users are sophisticated enough to tell what?s legitimate and what?s not. Write with the intention of offering something substantial to the reader. Be honest and forthright. Your article should not cause the reader to think, What is this guy trying to sell me? 5) Be succinct. Get to the point quickly, preferably in the first or second paragraph. Avoid lengthy paragraphs. Use lots of white space to separate your paragraphs to make them easier to read. 6) Your article should not be too short. Certainly, it?s possible to write a good article packed with useful information using just a couple hundred words. If your article is too short, however, some webmasters may feel hesitant to reprint it on their sites. They may, instead, borrow your ideas and write their own articles, gaining authorship without having to give you credit for your ideas. How long should your article be?  I suggest at least 500 words, preferably longer.  Longer articles give webmasters the impression that you have put some time and effort into your work and, thus, are deserving of being reprinted on their sites. 7) Use live (clickable) links in your resource box. Many e-zines permit clickable links in  resource boxes. Yet, many authors forgo this privilege by simply spelling out their URLs. Whenever permitted, you should spell out your URL as well as make it clickable (e.g. http://www.nexcomp.com/weblaunch). The advantages of a clickable URL are, (1) readers can go to your site simply by clicking on it,  and more importantly, (2) search engines will be able to record the ezine page containing your article as a link your web site, adding to your link popularity and search engine rankings. 8) Avoid hyping in your resource box. Your resource box, while promotional in nature, should be brief and tasteful. The purpose of your resource box is not to sell your readers something, but to lead them to your website which does the actual selling. Your resource box should contain your name, your company name, a brief description of your products or services, your web site?s URL, and a clickable link to your site. 9) Put some thought and effort into your writing. E-zines have varying standards for accepting articles, and some accept and publish all submissions without any human review at all. However, this does not mean you should write an article just for sake of having it published somewhere. If your article comes off as half-baked, readers may make a similar assumption about you and your business practices.
