Over the past several months, the issue of childhood obesity in West Virginia has come more to the forefront.
Plenty of blame has been passed around too.
Some point to the menus served in public schools.
Others say that a fast-paced lifestyle in which both parents work, sometimes two jobs, leads to a scenario that sees the family fed each evening from a fast-food restaurant?s drive-through window, as they quickly devour the processed foods from a cardboard box or paper bag.
Children seem to have steady and sometimes unlimited access to snacks such as sugary drinks and what a generation before called ?junk food.?
Statistics bear this out.
Standing before a state legislative panel in June, Dr. Eloise Elliott, a West Virginia University professor, shared that in her findings 27.5 percent of West Virginia children are considered obese, compared to a national average of 17 percent.
