Mobile Mayor Says City Is Ready To Aid Crippled Carnival Ship

What better city to aid Carnival's crippled cruise ship, then a city that Carnival once called home?

"I think this will lead to us getting another ship. It also leads to the experience we have in dealing with ships," said Mobile Mayor Sam Jones.

Mayor Jones tells me the city is ready and capable to aid in assisting all 31 hundred passengers make it home, which he says is his main objective. It's been a year and 4 months since carnival cruised out of Mobile, leaving the Alabama Cruise Terminal with a 26 million dollar price tag. The mayor says talks between he and Carnival have been ongoing.

"The Triumph is larger than the ship that we had here, so the one thing that is does is that is brings a ship in here to see how we operate with it. To us it's a positive situation in terms with our relationship with Carnival and other cruise lines. But for the passengers everyone is concerned with them right now," he tell me.

Steve Cape is a travel agent and has booked clients on the "Triumph" in the past.

"This is a good publicity situation for Mobile in helping us get the word out to all the cruise lines that mobile has a home port, and Mobile can handle the passengers in an efficient way," said Cape.

After 4 days of being stuck on the ship with no electricity and ventilation, the smoother the transition to make it home for the passengers, the better.

"I feel sorry for them because I'm sure there's no bathroom facilities," said Geri Burnett.

As for the exact amount the city will charge Carnival to dock here, the mayor says that number hasn't been decided, and it depends on what Carnival needs and how long the ship plans to stay.
