BLUFFTON ? It didn't take long for work to get underway on the newest addition to the Bluffton University campus. In fact, even before the backhoe ceremoniously scooped a load of dirt, excavators were already working on a new academic and athletics complex.
A crowd of more than 100 turned out Tuesday morning to officially break ground on the new $14 million Health and Fitness Education Center. The 60,000-square-foot facility will be the home for the academic department of health, fitness and sport science, a weight and fitness center for all students, a sports medicine center, athletic offices and a new arena that will be home to intercollegiate basketball and volleyball teams.
?This is a huge moment for Bluffton. We're building the largest building on our campus,? President Dr. James Harder said. ?We've worked at this for about five years. We're just very grateful to all the alumni and friends of the university that have made this building possible.?
The building is expected to be complete by late 2012 and will also be the first building on campus to be certified under the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design system. Key elements of the certification are the use of natural light in at least 90 percent of the center's regularly occupied spaces and recycling of 75 percent or more of construction waste.
Funding for the project came through contributions to a campus fundraising drive that has netted $30 million to support academic programs, student scholarships, endowment and the building project.
?Bluffton deeply appreciates the commitment of many alumni and friends who chose to invest in the university's future during a time of economic uncertainty,? Dr. Hans Houshower, vice president for advacement, said. ?Bluffton's donors have truly extended their reach to make this day possible.?
Harder agreed.
?This is the next big development in Bluffton's ongoing commitment to deliver a total educational program of the highest quality,? Harder said. ?A Bluffton education includes excellent teaching and learning in the classroom and through a variety of co-curricular programs, including health and fitness for all students and competitive facilities for our NCAA student-athletes. This new building will meet the needs of Bluffton students for many years to come.?
